INTRODUCTION: Moyamoya syndrome is commonly associated with sickle cell anemia, neurofibromatosis type 1, cranial therapeutic irradiation, and Down syndrome. However, it is rare for Moyamoya syndrome associated with Graves' disease.
CASE REPORT: Here we report a case of Moyamoya syndrome associated with Graves' disease in a 19-year-old girl with sudden weakness of the right arm, progressive caries, and alopecia for 4 years. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed acute intraventricular hemorrhage and cerebral infarction of left middle cerebral artery territory and narrowing of the proximal

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) occurs in 31% to 43% of infants weighing less than 1500 g. Intraventricular hemorrhage is rarely an isolated lesion at autopsy. To document associated cerebral abnormality, 24 brains of infants with a diagnosis of IVH and who survived for at least one week were examined. The diagnosis was verified in 20 infants. Choroid plexus hemorrhage and brain calcification had been misdiagnosed as IVH in two infants and in two other infants, IVH was not evident at autopsy. Eleven infants (46%) had choroid plexus hemorrhage. Twenty-two infants (92%) had additional cerebral

A case is reported with hydrocephalus subsequent to neonatal intraventricular and intracerebral hemorrhage. Hydrocephalus was diagnosed as obstructive, secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage. However, the lateral ventricle in the hemisphere in which the intracerebral hemorrhage occurred dilated much more than that in the contralateral hemisphere. Hydrocephalus occurring in regions of the brain that have suffered destructive changes from a cause other than that of the hydrocephalus, as in this reported case, is proposed as a new category, ("destruction hydrocephalus"). It is to be distinguished f

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is an acute, immune-mediated inflammatory peripheral polyneuropathy that is characterized by flaccid paralysis. A few cases have reported that GBS can be caused by head trauma or neurosurgery, but it has never been associated with intraventricular hemorrhage. Here, we report an uncommon case of fulminant GBS that occurred after spontaneous intraventricular hemorrhage. A 73-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital after sudden unconsciousness and vomiting. A head computed tomography (CT) scan following the incident showed a newly developed intraventricular hemor

Impaired psychomotor development, often anteceded by major intraventricular hemorrhage or periventricular leukomalacia, constitutes the most important long-term morbidity of very preterm infants. We reviewed randomized controlled trials aimed at reducing the incidence of brain damage, as detected by ultrasound, or neurodevelopmental impairment during follow-up of preterm infants. Preliminary reports of reduced rates of intraventricular hemorrhage obtained with administration of fresh frozen plasma, ethamsylate, phenobarbitone, or morphine have not been confirmed in subsequent larger trials. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Despite decades of research, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) remains a devastating condition with high morbidity and mortality. Traditional external ventricular drains (EVDs) have long served as the cornerstone of surgical management but are limited by various complications. This review evaluates recent literature on continuous ventricular irrigation as an alternative approach to treating IVH.
RECENT FINDINGS: Early data surrounding continuous ventricular irrigation systems, including retrospective comparative studies and case series are encouraging. However, existing ran

Intraventricular hemorrhage during pregnancy is usually followed by a poor recovery. When caused by moyamoya disease, ischemic or hemorrhagic episodes may complicate the management of high intracranial pressure. A 26-year-old Caucasian woman presented with generalized seizures and a Glasgow Coma Score (GCS) of 3 during the 36th week of pregnancy. The fetus was delivered by caesarean section. The brain CT in the mother revealed bilateral intraventricular hemorrhage, a callosal hematoma, hydrocephalus and right frontal ischemia. Refractory high intracranial pressure developed and required bilate

Fifty neonatal and infant heads were examined using a 5 MHz real-time sector scanner. Anatomic detail superior to that previously described was achieved by this method. Normal structures routinely imaged included the entire ventricular system and many parts of the subarachnoid spaces. The gray scale detail of parenchymal structures was usefully demonstrated. Routinely visualized vascular structures included the anterior cerebral artery system, the middle cerebral arteries, the choroid plexus, and the posterior cerebral arteries. Hydrocephalus, as well as intraventricular hemorrhage and its seq

BACKGROUND: Aneurysms in the pediatric population are uncommon, requiring a high index of suspicion for diagnosis. We report a case of a child with head trauma and delayed diagnosed cerebral aneurysm.
METHODS: A 2-year-old girl was brought to the emergency room with seizures. Head imaging showed acute intraventricular hemorrhage, hydrocephalus, and paraclinoid aneurysm of the right internal carotid artery. She had been hospitalized elsewhere 1 month prior for traumatic brain injury after falling to the ground with subarachnoid and intraventricular hemorrhage and good recovery, but without dia

A 39-year-old man was rendered comatose after being struck repeatedly on the head in an altercation. After admission to the hospital, he had computed tomographic scan evidence of diffuse intraventricular and subarachnoid hemorrhage as well as cerebral edema. He shortly thereafter became "brain dead" and life-support systems were discontinued the following day. At autopsy, he had a swollen brain as well as evidence of intraventricular and subarachnoid hemorrhage. No aneurysm or other grossly obvious cause for the hemorrhage was detected. There was, however, a small laceration of the lateral wal

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) usually manifests as cerebral hemorrhage, especially as nontraumatic hemorrhages in normotensive elderly patients. Other manifestations are subarachnoid (SAH), subdural, intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and superficial hemosiderosis. A 52-year-old hypertensive woman presented with recurrent neurological deficits over a period of 2 years. Her serial brain magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans showed recurrent SAH hemorrhage, and also intracerebral, IVH and spinal hemorrhage, with superficial siderosis. Cerebral angiograms were normal. Right

INTRODUCTION: Moyamoya disease is generally considered to be paediatric cerebrovascular pathology, but in some cases the symptoms are seen in adults. Primary intraventricular hemorrhage, as a consequence of this disorder, is rare. One should be clear as to the diagnostic and neuroimaging criteria of 'definite moyamoya disease'.
CLINICAL CASE: A 52 year old man with a family history of two brothers having died of hemorrhagic cerebrovascular accidents and a personal history of headaches for many years and arterial hypertension. He was sent to us with stroke, headache, neck stiffness+4, disorien

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether intraventricular hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia are characterized by different risk factors.
METHODS: In a cohort of 653 consecutive singleton neonates born after preterm membrane rupture, spontaneous preterm labor, or indicated preterm delivery at 24 to 33 weeks of gestation from January 1, 1993, to December 31, 2002, we evaluated the obstetric and histopathologic placental variables in reference to the development of intraventricular hemorrhage (n = 44), periventricular leukomalacia (n = 19), or no ultrasonographic cerebral lesion (n = 589). The relationship between intracranial pressure and CT images was investigated in 80 cases of cerebral hemorrhage that occurred between 1984 and 1990. In traumatic intracerebral hematoma, positive correlation was found between intracranial pressure and both shift of midline structures and volume of hematoma except in the occipital lobe or at the base of the frontal lobe. In nontraumatic intracerebral hematoma, increased intracranial pressure was found to correlate with changes in the configuration of the lateral ventricles, intraventricular hemorrhage, and compression of the basal cisterns and

The clinical and computed tomographic (CT) findings in 100 consecutive adult nontraumatic intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) cases are analyzed. There were 74 parenchymal brain hemorrhages with secondary ventricular extension. The ventricles were filled with blood and asymmetrically enlarged. If the hemorrhage involved putamen, cerebellum, pons, or subcortical cerebral hemispheric white matter, IVH was associated with large parenchymal hematomas; these patients had poor clinical outcome. With thalamic or caudate hematomas, IVH frequently occurred with large hematomas but may occur with small he

We prospectively and longitudinally evaluated neurologic status, cognitive status, and visual-evoked responses in 63 premature infants with cerebral intraventricular hemorrhage, 27 premature infants without hemorrhage, and 22 full-term normal infants. We hypothesized that severe intraventricular hemorrhage (grades III and IV) is associated with impaired visual-motor function, in part because of compression-related injury of the periventricular white matter by ventricular dilation. Infants with grade III or IV hemorrhage had significantly more neurologic sequelae at term and at 3, 7, 12, and 24…

Objectives Cerebral vasospasm in subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is associated with high morbidity and mortality. There is a lack of consensus on the risk factors leading to cerebral vasospasm in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). In this retrospective study, our objective was to determine the association of risk factors for cerebral vasospasm aSAH. Methods A total of 259 charts of aSAH patients consecutively admitted to the surgical intensive care unit of Hamad General Hospital from January 2007 to December 2016 were reviewed and included. The patient's demographic data,

Intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) is bleeding within the ventricular system, which in adults is usually mainly secondary to cerebral haemorrhage and subarachnoid haemorrhage. Hydrocephalus is one of the most common complications of intraventricular haemorrhage, which is characterised by an increase in intracranial pressure due to an increased accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within the ventricular system, and is closely related to the patient's prognosis. Surgical methods such as shunt surgery have been used to treat secondary hydrocephalus in recent years and have been effective in improv

We admitted 48 preterm neonates (600 to 1250 gm birth weight, normal 6-hour echoencephalograms) to a randomized prospective indomethacin or placebo trial for the prevention of neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage. Beginning at 6 postnatal hours, indomethacin or placebo was administered intravenously every 12 hours for a total of five doses. Cardiac ultrasound studies to assess the status of the ductus arteriosus were performed at 6 postnatal hours and on day 5. Urinary output, serum electrolytes, and renal and clotting functions were monitored. No differences in birth weight, gestational age,

Germinal matrix-intraventricular-intraparenchymal hemorrhage (GMH-IVH-IPH) is a major complication of very preterm births before 32 weeks of gestation (WG). Despite progress in clinical management, its incidence remains high before 27 WG. In addition, severe complications may occur such as post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus and/or periventricular intraparenchymal hemorrhage. IVH is strongly associated with subsequent neurodevelopmental disabilities. For this review, an automated literature search and a clustering approach were applied to allow efficient filtering as well as topic clusters identifi
