Altered white matter integrity in individuals with cognitive vulnerability to depression: a tract-based spatial statistics study.

The microstructure of white matter in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) has been demonstrated to be abnormal. However, it remains unclear whether these changes exist prior to the onset of disease. In this study, diffusion tensor imaging was used to evaluate white matter integrity in individuals who exhibited cognitive vulnerability to depression (CVD), MDD, and healthy controls (HC). Compared with the HC, MDD exhibited a lower fractional anisotropy (FA) in ten brain regions: the cerebral peduncle, the anterior and posterior limbs of the internal capsule (ALIC and PLIC), the externa

Pattern of pyramidal tract collateralization to medial thalamus, lateral hypothalamus and red nucleus in the cat.

Stimulating electrodes were placed in the red nucleus, lateral hypothalamus and medial thalamus in order to determine whether pyramidal tract (PT) neurons send collaterals to those sites. The red nucleus projections are well-known, but it was discovered that PT neurons also project into the other two sites. All of the fibers that sent collaterals to all three sites originated from fast PT neurons. Those that responded to stimulation of the skin and that sent collaterals to two or three sites were predominantly fast PT neurons. Those neurons that responded only to cerebral peduncle stimulation

Clinical and magnetic resonance imaging features of elderly onset dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy.

Dentatorubral-pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is an autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxia caused by CAG triplet expansion in atrophin 1 and is frequently associated with cerebral white matter lesions. To elucidate the clinical features of elderly onset DRPLA and the key radiological findings for differentiating DRPLA from physiological white matter lesions in healthy elderly subjects, we reviewed the clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of ten patients with elderly onset genetically confirmed DRPLA (> 60 years) and compared their MRI findings with those of age- and sex-mat

Magnetic Resonance Neuroimaging Findings in High-altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) and Probable Correlation with its Temporal Evolution and Pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: High-altitude illness (HAI) is a spectrum continuum ranging from innocuous high-altitude headache (HAH) to severe, potentially fatal high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE) with acute mountain sickness (AMS) and high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) in the middle of the gamut. MRI brain findings in such patients have prognostic implications, especially the diffusion and susceptibility-weighted imaging. METHODOLOGY: Twenty-one devotees visiting a high-altitude cave temple, in whom there was a clinical suspicion of high-altitude cerebral edema after the ascent, were included in this stud

Deep adversarial learning identifies ADHD-specific associations between apoptotic genes and white matter microstructure in frontal-striatum-cerebellum circuit.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by genetic predisposition and alterations in brain structural connectivity. While existing studies have established associations between genetic variants and neuroanatomical features, the specific relationships in ADHD remained poorly understood. To address this gap, we developed adversarial deep canonical correlation analysis models (A-DCCA) to disentangle ADHD-specific and non-specific "gene-white matter" association patterns. Utilizing diffusion tensor imaging and genotype data from six-hundred AD

Secondary injury to distal regions after intracerebral hemorrhage influence neurological functional outcome.

Although many studies have focused on functional impairment after intracerebral hemorrhage, little is known about the relationship between secondary injuries to distal regions and neurological function. Our study aimed to evaluate the secondary injuries after intracerebral hemorrhage and explore their relationship to neurological functional outcome. Twenty-one patients with hemorrhages in supratentorial, deep locations and 10 healthy subjects were recruited. Longitudinal examinations of diffusion tensor imaging, hydrogen proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging and neuropsychological ass

Recovery of the corticospinal tract after injury by transtentorial herniation: a case report.

Little is known about recovery of the corticospinal tract (CST) after injury by transtentorial herniation (TH). We present with a patient who showed recovery of the CST after injury by TH, using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). A 69-year-old female underwent craniotomy and drainage of an intracerebral hemorrhage in the left corona radiata and basal ganglia. Brain CT showed left TH and brain MRI revealed a leukomalactic lesion at the left cerebral peduncle. The patient presented with complete paralysis of the right extremities at ICH onset, but sl

Posterior cerebral artery aneurysm in a two-year-old girl.

Intracranial aneurysms are seldom encountered in the pediatric age group, and those within the posterior circulation are even more rare. Intracranial aneurysms in children differ from adult aneurysms in size, distribution, histology and incidence of symptoms. The authors report a 2-year-old female patient with a posterior cerebral artery aneurysm presenting with seizures, right third nerve palsy and right hemiparesis caused by compression of the contralateral cerebral peduncle. The patient underwent a pterional craniotomy and clipping of the aneurysm. Right oculomotor nerve palsy remained post

Holmes Tremor due to Artery of Percheron Infarct: Clinical Case and Treatment Using Deep Brain Stimulation of the Vim and ZI Targets.

BACKGROUND: Holmes tremor (HT) arises from disruption of the cerebellothalamocortical pathways. A lesion can interrupt the projection at any point, resulting in this tremor. We describe a case of HT due to the rare artery of Percheron infarct and its successful treatment using deep brain stimulation. CASE REPORT: A 62-year-old woman with a right medial cerebral peduncle and bilateral thalamic stroke developed HT. Ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim) zona incerta (ZI) deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery was performed, with improvement in her tremor. DISCUSSION: Our case supports the theory tha

Stimulation of the trunk area of the motor cortex elicits straining in dogs.

To clarify the cortical portion of dogs which corresponds to the portion to perform voluntary straining in human, the posterior sigmoid gyrus of anesthetized dogs was systematically stimulated. When reflex-straining was elicited at constant intervals (10-20 s) by stimulation of pelvic afferents, extra-straining (cortical straining) intervening between reflex-straining was elicited after a latent period (0.2-1.0 s) by pulse train stimulation of a focal portion in the trunk area of the motor cortex (M1). Cortical straining reset cycles of reflex-straining. The minimum threshold intensity was obs

Low-grade intraventricular hemorrhage disrupts cerebellar white matter in preterm infants: evidence from diffusion tensor imaging.

INTRODUCTION: Recent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have demonstrated that leakage of hemosiderin into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is caused by high-grade intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), can affect cerebellar development in preterm born infants. However, a direct effect of low-grade IVH on cerebellar development is unknown. Thus, we evaluated the cerebellar and cerebral white matter (WM) of preterm infants with low-grade IVH. METHODS: Using DTI tractography performed at term-equivalent age, we analyzed 42 infants who were born less than 30 weeks gestational age (GA) at birth (

The evaluation of Wallerian degeneration in chronic paediatric middle cerebral artery infarction using diffusion tensor MR imaging.

BACKGROUND: The long-term neuromotor outcome in paediatric strokes ranges from normal to varying degrees of hemiplegia. We evaluated the indices of diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI), fractional anisotropy and mean diffusivity to determine if these indices can identify and quantify the presence of Wallerian degeneration in paediatric patients with chronic middle cerebral artery infarction, and to determine if these quantitative parameters correlate with the neuromotor outcome. METHODS: Eleven children (mean age 8.1 years) with evidence of unilateral middle cerebral artery strok
