OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between interleukin (IL)-18 in cervical mucus and amniotic fluid and microbial invasion of amniotic fluid, preterm delivery and intra-amniotic inflammation in women in preterm labour, with preterm prelabour rupture of membranes and at term.
DESIGN: A prospective follow up study.

In 101 healthy pregnant women and 132 pregnant women with genital infection (colpitis, endocervicitis, cervicitis) the characteristics of the anti-infectious protection of cervical mucus were studied. In pregnant women with inflammatory diseases of the vagina and cervix uteri disturbances in the local immunity of the sex system were detected. The study showed that in genital infections local immunodeficiency depended to a greater extent on the localization and spread of the process rather than on the etiological factor of the disease.

Preovulatory cervical mucous of normal cycles was checked in 8 women for the presence of deoxycorticosterone (DOC), corticosterone and aldosterone. Cervical mucous DOC varied from lower to higher levels, and corticosterone concentration was several fold lower than in the blood serum. No aldosternone was detected in the cervical mucous. High cervical mucous DOC levels may indicate its synthesis by glandular cells of the cervix. Low corticosterone cervical mucous levels may indicate its transfer from the blood.

PURPOSE: To present causes of cervical mucus problems leading to poor postcoital tests and options for treatment.
METHODS: Presentation of mostly original research dealing with diagnosis and treatment of cervical mucus abnormalities.

Of 259 women using intrauterine contraceptive devices 80 (31%) had visible actinomyces-like filaments in their cervical smears. Actinomycetes were cultured from a total of 31 women. Suspicious cultures were identified with the aid of a commercially available kit in conjunction with a computer data base. Culture was found to be less sensitive than microscopical examination of cervical smears in detecting actinomycetes in these women.
