Operational performance and analysis of two rabies vaccination campaigns in N'Djamena, Chad.

Transmission of rabies from animals to people continues despite availability of good vaccines for both human and animal use. The only effective strategy to achieve elimination of dog rabies and the related human exposure is to immunize dogs at high coverage levels. We present the analysis of two consecutive parenteral dog mass vaccination campaigns conducted in N'Djamena in 2012 and 2013 to advocate the feasibility and effectiveness for rabies control through proof of concept. The overall coverage reached by the intervention was >70% in both years. Monthly reported rabies cases in dogs decreas

Health problems of peacekeepers carrying out mandatory tasks in Chad, Central Africa.

BACKGROUND: The article presents the results of the author's own studies concerning the morbidity profile in the group of soldiers serving in the Polish Military Contingent (PMC) deployed to Chad in the period May 2008-April 2009 within the framework of a European Union operation (EUFOR) and a United Nations peacekeeping mission (MINURCAT). MATERIAL AND METHODS: The conducted analysis was based on medical records of soldiers (n = 540) treated at Level 1 (FOB Iriba) and Level 2 (HQ Abeche) medical centres located in the operational zone where the PMC was stationed. Irrespective of the evaluati

[Morbidity patterns in three nomadic communities in Chari-Baguirmi and Kanem, Chad].

Within the framework of an multidisciplinary research and action program, morbidity patterns were assessed in three nomadic communities, i.e., Fulani, Arab cattle breeders and Arab camel breeders, living in Chari-Baguirmi and Kanem, Chad. This is the first data about the health of Chadian nomadic pastoralists who account for approximately 6% of the total population. A total of 1092 women, men and children were interviewed and examined in the course of three surveys carried out by a physician during the dry and rainy season. Nomads reporting no health problems were rare. Tuberculosis was suspec

[Epidemiology of Bietti's keratopathy. Study of risk factors in Central Africa (Chad)].

Climatic Droplet keratopathy (synonyms: spheroidal degeneration, Bietti's keratopathy) is a corneal degeneration characterized by an opacification at the level of the Bowman's membrane in the area of the palpebral fissure. It is particularly common in areas of bright sunlight and in Labrador; ultraviolet light thus being thought at its genesis. Two objectives were included in this study: studying the Climatic Droplet Keratopathy (CDK) prevalence by looking for the influence of the climatic factor; looking for possible association with three other degenerative ocular diseases: cataract, open-an

Modeling framework to demonstrate elimination of a vector population: Tsetse elimination in Chad.

Every year, over 700,000 people, particularly children under five, die from vector-borne diseases worldwide. Effectively controlling endemics and preventing new outbreaks requires an integrated approach that can lead to the elimination of both vectors and diseases. In the last two decades, integrating medical interventions and vector control has significantly reduced the incidence of Gambian Human African Trypanosomiasis (g-HAT), with the World Health Organization validating eight countries as having eliminated the disease as a public health problem. However, elimination of the tsetse vector h

The community drug distributor passport: a case study of training and recognition in Chad.

INTRODUCTION: Community health workers (CHWs), particularly volunteer community drug distributors (CDDs), play essential roles in advancing universal health coverage (UHC) and neglected tropical disease (NTD) control, yet their responsibilities and formal recognition remain poorly defined across health systems. This creates policy-implementation disconnects, especially during mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns for schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiases, where CDDs deliver critical services amid declining motivation and weak community awareness. METHODS: From 15 September 202

[Updating the northern tsetse distribution limit in Chad in the context of global change].

BACKGROUND - RATIONALE: Tsetse flies (Diptera: Glossinidae) are obligate bloodfeeders that occur exclusively in Sub-Saharan Africa, where they are the vectors of trypanosomes causing HAT (human African trypanosomiasis) and AAT (African animal trypanosomiasis). In Chad, tsetse flies occur only in the most southern part of the country because of its favorable bioclimatic conditions. However, despite the importance of HAT and AAT in this country, very little is known about the current tsetse distribution, in particular its northern limit, which is of key importance for the surveillance of these d

Guinea worm in domestic dogs in Chad: A description and analysis of surveillance data.

After a ten-year absence of reported Guinea worm disease in Chad, human cases were rediscovered in 2010, and canine cases were first recorded in 2012. In response, active surveillance for Guinea worm in both humans and animals was re-initiated in 2012. As of 2018, the Chad Guinea Worm Eradication Program (CGWEP) maintains an extensive surveillance system that operates in 1,895 villages, and collects information about worms, hosts (animals and humans), and animal owners. This report describes in detail the CGWEP surveillance system and explores epidemiological trends in canine Guinea worm cases

Possible Role of Fish and Frogs as Paratenic Hosts of Dracunculus medinensis, Chad.

Copepods infected with Dracunculus medinensis larvae collected from infected dogs in Chad were fed to 2 species of fish and tadpoles. Although they readily ingested copepods, neither species of fish, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) nor fathead minnow (Pimephalis promelas), were found to harbor Dracunculus larvae when examined 2-3 weeks later. Tadpoles ingested copepods much more slowly; however, upon examination at the same time interval, tadpoles of green frogs (Lithobates [Rana] clamitans) were found to harbor small numbers of Dracunculus larvae. Two ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) were

Transient Cold Hemagglutinin Disease (CHAD) During Cardiac Surgery: An Unexpected Complication from Hypothermia.

A 74-year-old male with mild non-specific anaemia underwent elective mitral and tricuspid valve surgery. Following initiation of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), systemic cooling to 34℃ and cardioplegia at 4℃, upon cardiotomy, clumps of blood were noted in the left atrium and left ventricle. ACT was confirmed to be in range, therefore a blood sample from CPB machine was collected and when exposed to ice demonstrated clumps, while they disappeared once at normal temperature. Hence, the patient was rewarmed to 37℃, subsequent cardioplegia doses were delivered warm and the heart chambers were washed

Neuroimaging access in Chad: Infrastructure barriers and opportunities for accessible magnetic resonance imaging.

Limited access to neuroimaging remains a major constraint on neurological care in many low-resource areas. We conducted a descriptive landscape analysis of neuroimaging access in Chad using hospital-reported data, publicly available healthcare and infrastructure data, and contextual information from clinicians and radiology personnel at major hospitals in N'Djamena. This analysis characterizes key constraints on neuroimaging access in Chad and highlights practical considerations for expanding imaging capacity in resource-limited settings. Chad has only one magnetic resonance imaging scanner fo

Rethinking HIV care for youth: Insights from qualitative research with youth in Chad.

Youth ages 15-24 years are significantly impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, representing approximately 37% of new infections globally. This demographic is especially vulnerable in sub-Saharan Africa, where over 80% of HIV-positive youth reside. In Chad, youth face barriers to effective HIV care, including high prevalence rates, particularly among young women, and substantial disparities across regions. Despite overall reductions in new HIV infections, youth remain disproportionately affected, necessitating targeted interventions to improve HIV care outcomes. This study represents a secondary d

Case report: intraocular localization of Mansonella perstans in a patient from south Chad.

A case of Mansonella perstans infection with visual impairment and a retinal lesion is described. After a course of diethylcarbamazine and a further course of mebendazole the symptoms improved and the microfilariae blood concentration decreased. The symptoms and response to antifilarial treatment strongly suggested the intraocular localization of an M. perstans worm.

Molecular characteristics of hepatitis B virus among students and pregnant women in Chad.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection remains a global public health problem claiming about 1, 1 million lives among the several hundred million people infected with the virus globally. However, low- and middle-income countries including those in sub-Saharan Africa carry the highest burden but limited knowledge of the pathogen. This calls for studies to characterise the circulating genotypes of the virus in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study, sought to determine the molecular characteristics of HBV circulating among pregnant women and students in Chad. METHODS: Venous blood samples were c
