Spatial and temporal events in tooth development of Astyanax mexicanus.

The Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus), a freshwater teleost fish, is an excellent vertebrate model organism to study tooth development, specifically the spatiotemporal events related to the development of the oral and pharyngeal dentitions. In contrast to the coordinated early tooth development in the premaxilla and mandible, the maxillary teeth develop much later in life at 60 dpf. By analysing a growth series of bone and cartilage stained tetra and histological sectioning of the tooth bearing bones, we track the developmental events of tooth development over ontogeny of this animal. Craniofacial skeleton of MEXICAN tetra (Astyanax mexicanus): As a bone disease model.

A small fresh water fish, the Mexican tetra (Astyanax mexicanus) is a novel animal model in evolutionary developmental biology. The existence of morphologically distinct surface and cave morphs of this species allows simultaneous comparative analysis of phenotypic changes at different life stages. The cavefish harbors many favorable constructive traits (i.e., large jaws with an increased number of teeth, neuromast cells, enlarged olfactory pits and excess storage of adipose tissues) and regressive traits (i.e., reduced eye structures and pigmentation) which are essential for cave adaptation. A

Manipulation of Fgf and Bmp signaling in teleost fishes suggests potential pathways for the evolutionary origin of multicuspid teeth.

Teeth with two or more cusps have arisen independently from an ancestral unicuspid condition in a variety of vertebrate lineages, including sharks, teleost fishes, amphibians, lizards, and mammals. One potential explanation for the repeated origins of multicuspid teeth is the existence of multiple adaptive pathways leading to them, as suggested by their different uses in these lineages. Another is that the addition of cusps required only minor changes in genetic pathways regulating tooth development. Here we provide support for the latter hypothesis by demonstrating that manipulation of the le

Description and phylogenetic position of an unusual genus and species of allocreadiid trematode from a characid freshwater fish in South America.

The worldwide distributed family Allocreadiidae Looss, 1902 is predominantly parasitic in freshwater fish and occasionally in amphibians and reptiles. It contains 15 genera, of which only Allocreadium, Creptotrema, Wallinia and Creptotrematina have been reported in Argentina. The records of Allocreadium species still require further verification. The discovery of an allocreadiid digenean parasitizing Pseudocorynopoma doriae led us to erect a new genus for which the name Martorellia n. gen is proposed. It is characterized by poorly developed ventrolateral muscular lobes and a transversely elong

From darkness to discovery: evolutionary, adaptive, and translational genetic insights from cavefish.

How genotype determines phenotype is a well-explored question, but genotype-environment interactions and their heritable impact on phenotype over the course of evolution are not as thoroughly investigated. The fish Astyanax mexicanus, consisting of surface and cave ecotypes, is an ideal emerging model to study the genetic basis of adaptation to new environments. This model has permitted quantitative trait locus mapping and whole-genome comparisons to identify the genetic bases of traits such as albinism and insulin resistance and has helped to better understand fundamental evolutionary mechani

Description of Saccocoelioides miguelmontesi n. sp. (Digenea: Haploporidae) from characid fishes in the Iguazu River Basin based on morphological and molecular evidence.

Here we describe a new species of the genus Saccocoelioides found parasitizing Astyanax dissimilis Garavello & Sampaio, Psalidodon bifasciatus (Garavello and Sampaio) and Bryconamericus ikaa Casciotta, Almirón & Azpelicueta from the Iguazu National Park, Misiones province, Argentina. Saccocoelioides miguelmontesi n. sp. was studied based on morphological and molecular (28S rDNA and COI mtDNA sequences) data. The COI mtDNA tree indicated that the specimens collected from the three fish hosts are conspecific, with an intragroup p-distance of 0%. The new species shows an intermediate morphologica

Parallel evolution of regressive and constructive craniofacial traits across distinct populations of Astyanax mexicanus cavefish.

Life in complete darkness has driven the evolution of a suite of troglobitic features in the blind Mexican cavefish Astyanax mexicanus, such as eye and pigmentation loss. While regressive evolution is a hallmark of obligate cave-dwelling organisms, constructive (or augmented) traits commonly arise as well. The cavefish cranium has undergone extensive changes compared with closely-related surface fish. These alterations are rooted in both cranial bones and surrounding sensory tissues such as enhancements in the gustatory and lateral line systems. Cavefish also harbor numerous cranial bone asymm

Waterborn Genotoxicity in Southern Brazil Using Astyanax bifasciatus (Pisces: Teleostei).

Water bodies are often negatively affected by unmediated expansion of surrounding human populations. This makes it essential to establish growth planning strategies that balance productivity and sustainability when creating a viable ecological equilibrium. This study aimed to evaluate genotoxic effects in southern Brazil, using biomarkers in the fish Astyanax bifasciatus, during summer and winter of 2016. The erythrocytic nuclear abnormalities test and the micronucleus test as well as the blood and liver comet assay were used to determine genetic biomarker damage. Four locations and a control

Performance of Co-Housed Neon Tetras (Paracheirodon innesi) and Glowlight Rasboras (Trigonostigma hengeli) Fed Commercial Flakes and Lyophilized Natural Food.

Little to no research has been conducted thus far regarding aquarium fish nutrition. In order to ensure the welfare of house-kept ornamentals, such studies should take into account that there are distinct biological differences occurring between different fish species/taxa, especially in regard to the structure of their digestive organs. Accordingly, a 12-week trial was executed to assess the effects of two commercial flakes and a mix of lyophilized natural food on the condition of co-reared neon tetras, Paracheirodon innesi (Characidae), and glowlight rasboras, Trigonostigma hengeli (Danionid

Antioxidant Defenses in the Kidneys and Heart of the Freshwater Fish Astyanax lacustris Subjected to High (31°C) and Low (15°C) Temperatures.

Aquatic ecosystems have their abiotic and biotic factors constantly altered by various factors. Among them, water temperature is an abiotic factor that can significantly affect fish physiology, increasing energy demand, which can impact homeostasis and survival. Endocrine and metabolic changes and enzymatic modulation are referred to as stress responses, which can lead to oxidative stress, generating negative physiological effects when temperature limits are exceeded. Oxidative stress biomarkers used in combination can highlight the effects of a stressful condition. Here, we seek to understand

A Natural Animal Model System of Craniofacial Anomalies: The Blind Mexican Cavefish.

Natural model systems evolving under extreme environmental pressures provide the opportunity to advance our knowledge of how the craniofacial complex evolves in nature. Unlike traditional models, natural systems are less inbred, and, therefore, better model the complex variation of the human population. Owing to the nature of certain craniofacial aberrations in blind Mexican cavefish, we suggest that this organism can provide new insights to a variety of craniofacial changes. Diverse cranial features have evolved in natural cave-dwelling Astyanax fish, which have thrived in the unforgiving dar

The influence of turbulence on the sensory basis of rheotaxis.

Rheotaxis is a widespread behavior with many potential benefits for fish and other aquatic animals, yet the sensory basis of rheotaxis under different fluvial conditions is still poorly understood. Here, we examine the role that vision and the lateral line play in the rheotactic behavior of a stream-dwelling species (Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus) under both rectilinear and turbulent flow conditions. Turbulence lowered the flow speed at which threshold levels of rheotactic performance were elicited, an effect that was independent of sensory condition. Compared to fish with access to visual

Albinism in phylogenetically and geographically distinct populations of Astyanax cavefish arises through the same loss-of-function Oca2 allele.

The Mexican tetra, Astyanax mexicanus, comprises 29 populations of cave-adapted fish distributed across a vast karst region in northeastern Mexico. These populations have a complex evolutionary history, having descended from 'old' and 'young' ancestral surface-dwelling stocks that invaded the region ∼6.7 and ∼2.8 MYa, respectively. This study investigates a set of captive, pigmented Astyanax cavefish collected from the Micos cave locality in 1970, in which albinism appeared over the past two decades. We combined novel coloration analyses, coding sequence comparisons and mRNA expression level s

Monogenean infection reduces thermal tolerance and alters thermal preference in Colossoma macropomum: physiological costs in an Amazonian fish host.

Parasitism can impose significant physiological stress on host organisms, potentially altering their behaviour and metabolic functioning. This study investigates the effects of Monogenean parasitism on thermal preference, heat stress tolerance, and physiological responses in Colossoma macropomum. Using a controlled laboratory thermal choice system, we compared parasitized and non-parasitized individuals regarding their spatial use of thermal zones and critical thermal maxima (CTmax). Lipid profiles were assessed to evaluate metabolic impacts, with no significant differences in triglyceride or

Cryptosporidium abrahamseni n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiiae) from red-eye tetra (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae).

The morphological, biological, and molecular characterisation of Cryptosporidium piscine genotype 7 from red-eye tetras (Moenkhausia sanctaefilomenae) are described, and the species name Cryptosporidium abrahamseni n. sp. is proposed. Histological analysis of intestinal tissue identified large numbers of Cryptosporidium organisms along the epithelial lining of the intestine. Sequence and phylogenetic analysis at 18S rRNA (18S) and actin loci conducted on intestinal scrapings revealed that C. abrahamseni n. sp. was genetically distinct from other Cryptosporidium species. At the 18S locus, it wa

Riding South American rivers: a multilocus assessment of Creptotrematina batalhensis (Digenea: Allocreadiidae).

The Allocreadiidae comprise a diverse group of digeneans infecting freshwater fishes worldwide, with South America harbouring a particularly rich fauna. Within this family, Creptotrematina includes five valid species parasitizing primarily characid fishes, most of which have been recorded from the La Plata Basin. Despite the large geographic extent and hydrological complexity of this basin, the genetic structure and evolutionary relationships of Creptotrematina species across its sub-basins remain poorly understood. The inclusion of a new ITS sequence of Martorellia liciae recovered the same t

Species delimitation of Gyrodactylus (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) infecting the southernmost cyprinids (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae) in the New World.

The genus Gyrodactylus von Nordmann, 1832 represents one of the most diverse and widespread taxa within Monogenea, with approximately 500 species described worldwide. Thirty-three species of Gyrodactylus have been recorded in Mexico, and in the last two decades, at least 26 new species have been described mainly from freshwater fish families such as poeciliids, goodeids, profundulids, characids, and cichlids. In this study, we describe two new species of Gyrodactylus infecting freshwater cyprinids based on morphological and molecular characteristics. Gyrodactylus ticuchi n. sp. and Gyrodactylu

Effects of GnRH and the dual regulatory actions of GnIH in the pituitary explants and brain slices of Astyanax altiparanae males.

The pituitary gonadotropins, Fsh (follicle-stimulating hormone) and Lh (luteinizing hormone), regulate testicular development and functions in all vertebrates. At the pituitary, different signaling systems regulate the synthesis and secretion of the gonadotropins, such as the hypothalamic neuropeptides GnRH (gonadotropin-releasing hormone) and GnIH (gonadotropin-inhibitory hormone). While GnRH exerts stimulatory roles, the actions of GnIH remain controversial for many teleost species. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro effects of chicken GnRH2 (cGnRH2) and zebrafish

The life cycle of Magnivitellinum saltaensis n. sp. (Digenea: Alloglossidiidae) in Salta Province, Argentina.

We describe the alloglossiid trematode Magnivitellinum saltaensis n. sp., a parasite of the characiform fish Psalidodon endy, and its life cycle from Salta, northwest of Argentina. This is the first life cycle described for a species belonging to the genus Magnivitellinum. Cercariae emerged naturally from Biomphalaria tenagophila snails and infected experimentally exposed larvae of Diptera and Ephemeroptera as second intermediate hosts. These larvae in turn were exposed to commercially raised fish, and adults were recovered from characiform albino fish Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. Molecular analysi

Effects of triploid induction on innate immunity and hematology in Astyanax altiparanae.

Triploid induction is a promising biotechnique that could be used to enhance aquaculture yields in the near future. However, studies conducted with several fish species have demonstrated that the presence of an extra set of chromosomes may result in deleterious health effects. Furthermore, studies of fish immune responses still need to be conducted before these specimens can be readily commercialized. In the study presented herein, we evaluated the effects of triploid induction on hematology, erythrocyte morphometry and morphology, phagocytosis, and the expression levels of IL-1β and TGF-β usi
