Conditions for transplantation of primordial germ cells in the yellowtail tetra, Astyanax altiparanae.

Biotechniques, including surrogate propagation derived from primordial germ cell (PGC) transplantation, are valuable tools for the reconstitution of endangered fish species. Although promising, there are no previous studies reporting such approaches using neotropical fish species. The aim of this study was to establish germline chimeras in neotropical fish by using the yellowtail tetra Astyanax altiparanae as a model species of the order Characiformes. Germline chimeras were obtained after transplantation of PGCs cultivated under different conditions: saline medium and supplemented with DMEM,

A Piranha-like Pycnodontiform Fish from the Late Jurassic.

Pycnodontiformes are an extinct order of ray-finned fishes from the Triassic to Eocene [1, 2], with a characteristic crushing dentition reflecting a highly specialized diet [3]. However, our discovery of a new pycnodontiform from the Late Jurassic (ca. 152 Ma) Plattenkalk deposits of the Solnhofen Archipelago revealed long, pointed teeth along the vomer and triangular teeth with cutting edges along the prearticulars. This is the earliest evidence of specialized flesh cutting in a ray-finned fish. The dentition pattern, tooth shape, jaw morphology, and mechanics are all indicative of a feeding

Influence of cage fish farming on diet composition of Sardela (Triportheus nematurus (Kner, 1858)) in a Neotropical reservoir.

Cage fish farming promotes the input of organic matter into the surrounding aquatic environment, which can alter the availability of food resources and consequently change the diet of wild fish. Thus, gathering information about cage fish farming influences on the aquatic environment is important. We aimed to evaluate the effects of cage fish farming on the trophic ecology of the omnivorous and non-native fish Triportheus nematurus. We collected individuals in areas with (CF) and without (CT) the influence of cage fish farms in April and July 2019, to analyze the stomach conte

Lip service: Histological phenotypes correlate with diet and feeding ecology in herbivorous pacus.

Complex prey processing requires the repositioning of food between the teeth, as modulated by a soft tissue appendage like a tongue or lips. In this study, we trace the evolution of lips and ligaments, which are used during prey capture and prey processing in an herbivorous group of fishes. Pacus (Serrasalmidae) are Neotropical freshwater fishes that feed on leaves, fruits, and seeds. These prey are hard or tough, require high forces to fracture, contain abrasive or caustic elements, or deform considerably before failure. Pacus are gape-limited and do not have the pharyngeal jaws many bony fis

Heat-induced triploids in Brycon amazonicus: a strategic fish species for aquaculture and conservation.

Triploidization plays an important role in aquaculture and surrogate technologies. In this study, we induced triploidy in the matrinxã fish (Brycon amazonicus) using a heat-shock technique. Embryos at 2 min post fertilization (mpf) were heat shocked at 38°C, 40°C, or 42°C for 2 min. Untreated, intact embryos were used as a control. Survival rates during early development were monitored and ploidy status was confirmed using flow cytometry and nuclear diameter analysis of erythrocytes. The hatching rate reduced with heat-shock treatment, and heat-shock treatments at 42°C resulted in no hatching

Efficacy, toxicity and histopathological analysis of Astrocaryum aculeatum oil solid lipid nanoparticles on Colossoma macropomum infected by parasitic dactylogyrideans.

This study investigated the efficacy of Astrocaryum aculeatum fixed oil solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) on dactylogyridean parasites of Colossoma macropomum gills and effects on hematology and gill histology. The main fatty acid component of A. aculeatum oil was oleic acid (68.0%). Among the concentrations of A. aculeatum fixed oil SLNs tested (250-1000 mg/L), the fish tolerated only 250 mg/L, which was the concentration used in the consecutive five baths of 1 h per day. Two control groups were also used: one with myristic acid + Tween 80 and another with only water from the cultivation tank.

Phylogenetic position of the Neotropical Family Zonocotylidae (Paramphistomoidea) using partial 28S rDNA sequences.

Six families belonging to the Paramphistomoidea superfamily have been reported in South America, with only Zonocotylidae and Balanorchiidae being endemic. The Zonocotylidae was initially classified as Aspidogastrea and then as a paramphistomoid. This family comprises a single genus, Zononocotyle, with two species. It is primarily characterized by having an attachment organ with transverse ridges and a single testis. The placement of Zonocotylidae within Paramphistomoidea is controversial, as some researchers speculate that this genus is the most primitive member of the superfamily, while other
