Esophageal motility disorders in children with dysphagia: the utility of the Chicago classification.

BACKGROUND: esophageal manometry is the standard criterion for the evaluation of dysphagia and the diagnosis of a primary motor disorder of the esophagus in adults and children. AIMS: to describe the diagnosis according to the Chicago classification (CC) v3.0 in children with dysphagia, in whom an esophageal motility disorder was documented. The associated comorbidities were also determined. METHODS: an observational retrospective study was performed of 54 patients evaluated for dysphagia, who had undergone a high-resolution manometry (HREM). RESULTS: a normal HREM was found in 52 % (n = 28

Reconstructive approach to hostile cranioplasty: A review of the University of Chicago experience.

BACKGROUND: Hostile sites for cranioplasty occur in patients with a history of radiation, infection, failed cranioplasty, CSF leak or acute infection. We review our series of autologous cranioplasties and present an approach to decision-making for reconstructing these complex defects. METHODS: Patients with cranioplasty of a hostile cranial site at the University of Chicago between 2003 and 2012 were identified. They were stratified into three groups: chimeric free flap with vascularized bone (the vascular group), non-vascularized bone with local coverage (the non-vascular group) and non-vasc

High-resolution Manometry: Esophageal Disorders Not Addressed by the "Chicago Classification".

The development of the high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) and the Chicago classification have improved the diagnosis and management of esophageal motility disorders. However, some conditions have yet to be addressed by this classification. This review describes findings in HRM which are not included in the current Chicago classification based on the experience in our center. This includes the analysis of the upper esophageal sphincter, proximal esophagus, longitudinal muscle contraction, disorders related to gastroesophageal reflux disease and respiratory symptoms. The utility of provo

Kidney transplantation at the University of Illinois at Chicago from 1988-2004.

The Division of Transplantation at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) was established in 1968 by Dr. Olga M. Jonasson, who performed the first living related kidney transplant in Illinois. The UIC Hospital is a typical inner city hospital serving primarily minorities and under-privileged populations with significant challenge for issues such as compliance, insurance coverage, low income, and degree of education. We analyzed the outcomes of 67 pediatric and 801 adult consecutive renal allotransplantations performed at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) from January 1988-Decemb

Influence of maternal ethnicity on infant mortality in Chicago, 1989-1996.

This study compared infant mortality rates between large ethnic groups in Chicago from 1989-1996. Infant mortality information about ethnic groups was compared using data from annual reports published by the Epidemiology Program, Department of Public Health, City of Chicago and vital statistics documents in Illinois, which include information on ethnicity. Chi-squared analysis was used to evaluate the differences between the proportions. A P value of < .05 was considered significant. During the study period, there were 461,974 births and 6407 infant deaths in Chicago. African Americans contrib

Recruiting young adults in an urban setting: the Chicago CARDIA experience.

The recruitment goal of Chicago Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) was 1,100 randomly selected young adults, in equal proportions for men and women, blacks and whites, two age groups, and two education groups. CARDIA is an ongoing multicenter study of the health and lifestyles of young adults designed to trace the development of risk factors for coronary heart disease over time. Participants completed a four-and-one-half hour exam and agreed to return two years later. In Chicago CARDIA, one of the four centers in the national collaborative study, random digit dialing of

Widespread exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides among common urban mesopredators in Chicago.

Anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs) are currently the most common method to control rats in cities, but these compounds also cause morbidity and mortality in non-target wildlife. Little attention has been focused on AR exposure among mesopredators despite their ecological role as scavengers and prey for larger carnivores, thus serving as an important bridge in the biomagnification of rodenticides in food webs. In this study, we sampled liver tissue from raccoons (Procyon lotor; n = 37), skunks (Mephitis mephitis; n = 15), and Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana; n = 45) euthanized by pest pro

Automated Chicago Classification for Esophageal Motility Disorder Diagnosis Using Machine Learning.

The goal of this paper is to provide a Machine Learning-based solution that can be utilized to automate the Chicago Classification algorithm, the state-of-the-art scheme for esophageal motility disease identification. First, the photos were preprocessed by locating the area of interest-the precise instant of swallowing. After resizing and rescaling the photos, they were utilized as input for the Deep Learning models. The InceptionV3 Deep Learning model was used to identify the precise class of the IRP. We used the DenseNet201 CNN architecture to classify the images into 5 different classes of

Chicago Classification Version 4.0 and Its Impact on Current Clinical Practice.

High-resolution manometry (HRM) has revolutionized esophageal motility testing, and the evolving Chicago Classification has been critical in codifying HRM metrics and definitions of old and new motility disorders. The latest Chicago Classification (version 4.0) is the result of a working group of 52 members (10 women) from 20 countries. Two critical new elements are the expansion of the normal database from 75 to 469 healthy volunteers and the recommendation of ancillary function tests (timed barium esophagram, functional lumen imaging planimetry, and/or impedance) to help with inconclusive HR

Suburban white-tailed deer seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii from Chicago, Illinois.

The presence and abundance of vertebrates influences the circulation of zoonotic diseases. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are widely distributed in North America and deer densities are frequently high in unhunted areas, including most major metropolitan regions. This study investigated the seroprevalence for Toxoplasma gondii from live-captured and culled deer sampled in two suburban forest preserves around Chicago, Illinois, from 1995 to 1999. Seroprevalence for T. gondii was 55.9% (n = 443) and was significantly higher at the northern study site, Des Plaines. Seroprevalence for T

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Fentanyl-Associated Overdose Deaths in Chicago, IL, USA.

Overdose deaths involving fentanyl represent a major public health crisis in the USA. This study investigates the spatiotemporal dynamics of fentanyl-involved deaths before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic and examines how sociodemographic factors influence these deaths across geographic regions. Using a retrospective ecological approach, we analyzed data on ZIP code-level fentanyl-related deaths in Cook County, IL, between 2018 and 2023, obtained from the Medical Examiner's Office and linked with sociodemographic data from the American Community Survey. We first mapped area-level deat
