Varicella in the neonatal ICU due to the Varicella vaccine Oka strain.

BACKGROUND: Varicella vaccination of non-immune post-partum women is recommended to reduce the risk of chickenpox in mothers and their infants. Though rare, transmission of the varicella vaccine strain vOka can occur from recent vaccinees to non-immune contacts who usually develop mild chickenpox. METHODS/RESULTS: Here we describe an infant hospitalized in the neonatal ICU with vaccine-strain varicella due to transmission from their mother who received the varicella vaccine post-partum. We describe the infection prevention and control strategies implemented to prevent further transmission. C

Varicella infection is not associated with increasing prevalence of eczema: a U.S. population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox infection early in childhood has previously been shown to protect against the development of childhood eczema in line with the hygiene hypothesis. In 1995, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended routine vaccination against varicella zoster virus in the United States. Subsequently, rates of chickenpox infection have dramatically decreased in childhood. OBJECTIVES: We sought to understand the impact of declining rates of chickenpox infection on the prevalence of eczema. METHODS: We analysed data from 207 007 children in the 1997-2013 National Health Interview Sur

Varivax (Merck & Co).

Varivax is a live-attenuated varicella vaccine developed and launched in the US by Merck & Co for the treatment of chickenpox [413319]. The vaccine uses the Oka strain of the varicella virus licensed from the Biken Institute at Osaka University in Japan [178223]. By June 2001, Merck was also developing the vaccine for use in adults for herpes zoster infection [413319]. The FDA required post-marketing studies as a condition for its approval of Varivax, which was granted in March 1995 [174416]. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended

Deadly outbreak of chickenpox at district Faisalabad, Pakistan: possible causes, and preventive way forward.

This article details our recommendations for the deadly outbreak of chickenpox to consider the additional referral of the absence of a monitoring system of prevention and control along with poor vaccination system for children in low-resource settings. The recent spread of chickenpox outbreak in Pakistan has claimed dozens of lives. The deaths in this current outbreak in quick successions are beyond understanding. Re-emergence of chickenpox in the area has raised many questions. Keeping in view the spread of chickenpox mainly in Faisalabad and its international reputation in trading, chickenpo

Clinical epidemiology of chickenpox in Iraq from 2007-2011.

UNLABELLED: Varicella zoster (chickenpox) infection is an acute common disease caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV). Children are most susceptible to infection. In non-vaccinated populations, primary infection tends to occur at a younger age. In 1998, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that routine childhood varicella vaccination be considered in countries where the disease is a relatively important public health and socioeconomic problem, and where high (85 to 90%) and sustained vaccine coverage can be achieved. AIM: 1- To determine the trend (occurrence, age and gender di

Immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a single dose of live attenuated varicella vaccine and a booster dose of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine given concomitantly at 12 years of age.

Universal varicella-zoster virus (VZV) childhood vaccination is still debated, but adult chickenpox may be severe. It could be prevented by vaccination of seronegative adolescents. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of coadministration of a VZV vaccine and the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) booster at 12 y of age. Guardians of 1231 12-y-old pupils where asked about the history of chickenpox in their children. 190 had no chickenpox history and 12 of 62 of them lacked VZV antibodies. Additional history-negative children were also recruited. 199 history-positive children received only MMR

Varicella-zoster virus vaccination under the exogenous boosting hypothesis: two ethical perspectives.

The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes two diseases: varicella ('chickenpox') and herpes zoster ('shingles'). VZV vaccination of children reduces exposure to chickenpox in the population and it has been hypothesized that this could increase the prevalence of shingles. This 'exogenous boosting' effect of VZV raises an important equity concern: introducing a vaccination program could advance the health of one population group (children) at the expense of another (adults and elderly). We discuss the program's justifiability from two ethical perspectives, classic utilitarianism and contractualism

Varicella Vaccination of Children With Leukemia Without Interruption of Maintenance Therapy: A Danish Experience.

BACKGROUND: Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) can be fatal or cause severe complications in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). This analysis set out to investigate the morbidity and mortality of VZV vaccination without interruption of maintenance therapy in children with ALL. METHODS: Files of 73 seronegative children with ALL were examined for data regarding VZV vaccination and infection, and long-term seroconversion was measured. Criteria before VZV vaccination were (1) seronegative, (2) in complete remission, (3) age ≥ 1.0 year, (4) lymphocyte count ≥ 0.6 × 10/L at time of vaccin

[Chickenpox seroprevalence among healthcare and social assistance workers in Catalonia (Spain)].

AIMS: Chickenpox is a frequent and contagious disease in healthcare and social assistance settings, and there are limited data on seroprevalence among workers in this sector. We estimated susceptibility to chickenpox among workers, by demographic and occupational variables, and measured the rate of seroprotection after vaccination. METHODS: A retrospective seroprevalence study of chickenpox (varicella) and serological vaccine response. The earliest recorded varicella serology, analyzed by the ELISA method, was identified for each worker from a health surveillance database of a group of medica

Estimated value of productivity lost due to childhood chickenpox in the United Kingdom: a survey of parents.

BACKGROUND: While medical costs of chickenpox have been researched, little is known about indirect costs. Understanding total costs is important for decisions about vaccination. This study estimated the value of lost productivity of adults missing work to care for children with chickenpox. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: It comprised an international literature review, an online survey of 1,526 parents of children aged 1-11 years, and computation of indirect costs of chickenpox in the UK. The survey covered chickenpox episodes amongst respondents' children, time children took off school/nursery,

Primary Varicella-Zoster Virus Infection Complicating the Third Trimester of Pregnancy.

Varicella-zoster virus, colloquially known as chickenpox in the United States, complicating pregnancy has become a rare diagnosis following the introduction of the varicella-zoster vaccine. Despite a lower incidence of chickenpox than in the past, those providing prenatal care should keep a high index of suspicion for varicella-zoster among patients presenting with a vesicular rash and no history of having received the varicella-zoster vaccine. This report reviews the case of a 28-year-old gravida three at 35 weeks gestation who presented with concern for a full-body vesicular rash and pruritu

[Varicella-pox virus infection: features of the course, clinical manifestations, complications, and possibilities for prevention].

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a pathogenic human herpes virus that causes chickenpox as a primary infection, after which it persists for a long time and latently in the peripheral ganglia. Decades later, the virus can reactivate spontaneously, or after exposure to a number of triggering factors, causing herpes zoster (shingles). The reasons for the long-term persistence of VZV are gradually being revealed, but some issues remain unknown at the moment. Chickenpox and its complications are especially difficult in immunocompromised patients, but they are often found in people without risk facto

Exploring the Seasonal Drivers of Varicella Zoster Virus Transmission and Reactivation.

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a herpesvirus that causes chickenpox and shingles. The biological mechanisms underpinning the multidecadal latency of VZV in the body and subsequent viral reactivation-which occurs in approximately 30% of individuals-are largely unknown. Because chickenpox and shingles are endemic worldwide, understanding the relationship between VZV transmission and reactivation is important for informing disease treatment and control. While chickenpox is a vaccine-preventable childhood disease with a rich legacy of research, shingles is not a notifiable disease in most countri

The Immunization Monitoring Program Active (IMPACT) prospective five year study of Canadian children hospitalized for chickenpox or an associated complication.

BACKGROUND: Varicella vaccine was approved for use in Canada in 1998. A major goal of universal varicella vaccine programs is to reduce severe infection and associated complications. Baseline data are essential against which to judge the effectiveness of routine childhood immunization. OBJECTIVE: To describe morbidity and mortality among children hospitalized for chickenpox. Methods. From January 1, 1991, to March 31, 1996, chickenpox admissions to 11 pediatric referral centers were actively identified. Patient and illness characteristics were compared for 3 subgroups defined by prior health:

[Summary of the multidisciplinary guideline 'Varicella'].

The multidisciplinary guideline 'Varicella' provides guidelines for diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of chickenpox. At the first pregnancy check, patients should be questioned about previous chickenpox; in case of a negative or doubtful history varicella zoster virus (VZV) serology is indicated. VZV antibody determination is also indicated in patients considered for immunosuppressive therapy and for healthcare workers with a negative VZV history who are in contact with immunocompromised patients. Administration of VZV immunoglobulin within 96 hours following VZV contact can mitigate the infe

[Acute non-suppurative encephalitis in children].

From July 1973 to January 1988, 66 children aged from three months to 14 years, 36 boys and 29 girls, were seen at the Central Hospital, Viborg, with acute encephalitis. In 25 cases the encephalitis was caused by mumps, in eight by measles, in six by chicken pox, one by herpes simplex, one by RS-virus, and one by mycoplasma. One case was seen after vaccination, one after infection and in 22 cases the cause of the encephalitis remained unknown. Sequelae were seen in 17 cases. The risk of encephalitis after mumps, measles, and rubella is an important argument for the use of MMR-vaccination and t

Management of chickenpox with frozen mother's milk.

OBJECTIVES: If a mother has contracted chickenpox, the antibodies in her milk confer immunity against chickenpox to her breastfed babies. This passive immunization may avoid or spare the breastfed babies' symptoms of chickenpox. It is hypothesized that frozen breast milk may shorten chickenpox duration because specific antibodies against varicella zoster have been detected in human milk and they are resistant to digestion and are stable in frozen milk. DESIGN: The clinical outcomes of chickenpox in a 9-year-old boy and his father on frozen breast milk are reported. SETTINGS: The study compri
