Reducing child abuse amongst adolescents in low- and middle-income countries: A pre-post trial in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: No known studies have tested the effectiveness of child abuse prevention programmes for adolescents in low- or middle-income countries. 'Parenting for Lifelong Health' ( http://tiny.cc/whoPLH ) is a collaborative project to develop and rigorously test abuse-prevention parenting programmes for free use in low-resource contexts. Research aims of this first pre-post trial in South Africa were: i) to identify indicative effects of the programme on child abuse and related outcomes; ii) to investigate programme safety for testing in a future randomised trial, and iii) to identify potenti

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Mental Distress Among Adolescents and Youth in Zimbabwe.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a global public health crisis associated with physical and poor mental health outcomes. The current study examined the prevalence and association between individual and cumulative ACEs with mental distress among adolescents and youth in Zimbabwe. Data from the 2017 Violence Against Children and Youth Survey were utilized (13-25 years old, n = 8,715). Bivariate analysis was conducted using chi-square tests to obtain the prevalence estimates. Two sets of logistic regression models were conducted to determine significant associations between independent va

Warmth and reciprocity with mothers, and young children's resilience to exposure to community violence in Colombia: findings from the La Sabana Parent-Child Study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to community violence is common worldwide and is associated with emotional and behavioural problems in children. Little is known about sources of resilience. Building on our previous work on the contribution of callous-unemotional (CU) traits to child aggression in Colombia, we examined whether positive parenting is protective for children whose families are exposed to community violence. METHODS: Families were recruited from three demographically contrasting regions of Colombia. The sample comprised 235 children aged 3.5 years and their mothers, of whom 220 (93%) were fo

Behavior and psychological functioning of young children of HIV-positive mothers in South Africa.

Adults with HIV are living longer due to earlier diagnosis and increased access to antiretroviral medications. Therefore, fewer young children are being orphaned and instead, are being cared for by parents who know they are HIV positive, although they may be asymptomatic. Presently, it is unclear whether the psychological functioning of these young children is likely to be affected or, alternatively, whether it is only when a mother is ill, that children suffer adverse effects. We, thus, aimed to compare the behavior and psychological functioning of young children (aged 6-10 years) of HIV-posi

[Causes of neuropaediatric morbidity in Africa].

The causes of child morbidity in Africa, which are extremely varied, raise a series of aetiopathogenic questions related to socio economics, socio-politics culture, religion and medicine. Development and conclusions. The paper analyses the morbid particularities of malaria in African children, in which numerous (often poorly understood) neurological manifestations are predominant. We also deal with the role played by arterial cerebrovascular malformations, above all in vascular obliterations due to congenital anomalies of haemoglobin or caused by clots formed by the accumulation of Plasmodium

Correlates of virological non-suppression among children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on Dolutegravir-based regimens attending Gulu regional referral hospital, Northern Uganda: a mixed methods cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Viral suppression has been sub-optimal among children and adolescent in Uganda, despite a near-universal transition to the much effective Dolutegravir-based regimens. Therefore this study was aimed at determining the prevalence of virological non-suppression and its associated correlates among children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on Dolutegravir-based regimens. METHODS: A mixed methods cross-sectional study was conducted among 303 children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on Dolutegravir-based regimens from January 2021 to December 2022. Undiagnosed AIDS in a 13-year-old boy in rural Gabon.

INTRODUCTION: To date, 38.4 million people live with the Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV) amongst whom 1.7 million are children below fourteen years of age. The highest burden of HIV is in sub-Saharan Africa. Children living with HIV acquired the infection mostly by mother-to-child transmission (MTCT), however the diagnosis is often delayed. In malaria-endemic countries, fever is one of the most frequent symptoms for seeking medical care and it is often primarily suspected as the onset of malaria or respiratory bacterial infections. Here, we report a case of late-onset undiagnosed AIDS in a 1

Maltreatment, social support, and mental well-being: A longitudinal observation study of youth in five low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Addressing the growing child and adolescent mental health crisis is a global priority, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Although the literature demonstrates that experiencing maltreatment may negatively impact mental well-being and experiencing social support may positively impact mental well-being, the relationship between mental well-being and co-occurring maltreatment and social support is unknown. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the relationship between maltreatment, social support, and mental well-being. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Study data is from th

The power of siblings and caregivers: under-explored types of social support among children affected by HIV and AIDS.

Children affected by HIV and AIDS have significantly higher rates of mental health problems than unaffected children. There is a need for research to examine how social support functions as a source of resiliency for children in high HIV-prevalence settings such as South Africa. The purpose of this research was to explore how family social support relates to depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress (PTS). Using the ecological model as a frame, data were drawn from a 2011 cross-sectional study of 1380 children classified as either orphaned by AIDS and/or living with an AIDS sick family me

Health insurance coverage for vulnerable children: two HIV orphans with Burkitt lymphoma and their quest for health insurance coverage in Kenya.

The United Nations and WHO have summoned governments from low-income and middle-income countries to institute universal health coverage and thereby improve their population's healthcare access and outcomes. Until now, few countries responded favourably to this international plea. The HIV/AIDS epidemic, a major global public health challenge, resulted in over 11 million orphans in sub-Saharan Africa. Extended families have taken responsibility for more than 90% of these children. HIV orphans are likely to be poorer and less healthy. Burkitt lymphoma is the most common childhood cancer in sub-Sa

What are the factors associated with depressive symptoms among orphans and vulnerable children in Cambodia?

BACKGROUND: Compared to general children, orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) are more exposed to negative outcomes in life such as abuse and neglect. Consequently, OVC are more susceptible to depression. This paper investigated factors associated with depressive symptoms among OVC in Cambodia. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data of 606 OVC from the Sustainable Action against HIV and AIDS in Communities (SAHACOM) project were analyzed. The data were collected from five provinces and analyzed separately for boys and girls. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify fac

Physical and sexual abuse in orphaned compared to non-orphaned children in sub-Saharan Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

This systematic review assessed the quantitative literature to determine whether orphans are more likely to experience physical and/or sexual abuse compared to non-orphans in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It also evaluated the quality of evidence and identified research gaps. Our search identified 10 studies, all published after 2005, from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Kenya and Uganda. The studies consisted of a total 17,336 participants (51% female and 58% non-orphans). Of those classified as orphans (n=7,315), 73% were single orphans, and 27% were double orphans. The majority of single orphans were p

Incidence and prevalence of orphanhood in Rakai, Uganda: a population-based cohort study, 1995-2022.

BACKGROUND: The introduction and scale-up of HIV treatment and prevention programmes have resulted in steady declines in orphanhood prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa, but orphanhood incidence and its associated factors are less understood. We aimed to describe the incidence and prevalence of orphanhood after HIV treatment and prevention programmes became available in Rakai, Uganda. METHODS: In this population-based cohort study, we used data from all children and adolescents younger than 18 years with censused parents residing in 28 continuously surveyed Rakai Community Cohort Study (RCCS) com
