[Unwanted pregnancy as a cause of child development disorders?].

Relationships between unwanted pregnancies and behavioural disturbances in the infant were analyzed in 6117 pregnancies examined within a prospective multicenter collaborative study on pregnancy and child development. Prior to analyzing their consequences, correlates and causes of undesired pregnancy liable to operate as confounding factors by exerting direct influences on disturbances in the fetus or newborn were identified. This was achieved by stratification of the total group according to variables of obstetric history relevant to desire of pregnancy. Although not only social factors but a

The development of a rural team to deal with child abuse.

In the last ten years teams for dealing with child abuse have become established in many urban centres. More recently rural communities have started similar programs; such a team was established in rural Manitoba in 1976. A series of events since then has improved the operation of the team. Cooperation with an urban team has enhanced the functioning of the rural team. A broad base of community support for this work has been essential. A review of cases seen in the last 18 months indicates 12 cases are physical abuse, nine are sexual, six neglect, and one emotional abuse.

Environmental and Physiological Barriers to Child Growth and Development.

Aggregated analyses of child growth in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) reveal a remarkably consistent picture of serious growth failure compared to the WHO reference growth curves. Impoverished diets with low dietary diversity are a key driver of poor growth, but there are important additional environmental factors that limit the uptake and utilization of nutrients. This paper considers such factors. A large proportion of the rapid growth deterioration in later infancy can be ascribed to infections and to wider nonspecific effects of living in an unhygienic environment, including the

Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Child Neglect Questionnaire.

Neglect poses a significant risk for children throughout their development and is often linked with serious consequences that reach into adulthood. The Child Neglect Questionnaire (CNQ) fills existing gaps by incorporating multiple perspectives from both parents and the child, as well as measuring the complex phenomenon of neglect multidimensionally. Furthermore, this measure addresses the need for an instrument specifically developed for late childhood (ages 10-12), as much of the extant evidence and corresponding measures focus on young children and their mothers. A panel of three psychologi

Donor insemination, the impact on family and child development.

The practice of donor insemination (DI) has undergone major changes in the past 20 years. Attention was paid to the long-term psychological effects, the pleas for openness became stronger over the years and the use of anonymous donors became subject to public debate in several countries. The present article reviews what empirical research there is into DI families and their children. Over the years follow up studies have appeared sporadically and in spite of the varying quality of the research methods, preliminary findings have emerged. Research into the confidentiality issue in DI couples rev

Evaluation and management of the child with delayed pubertal development.

The physical and hormonal changes of puberty are presented and the wide range of ages at which the pubertal process may begin is emphasized. The great variability in the timing of onset of adolescence, its rate of progression, and the age of completion are detailed. The causes of delayed adolescence in males and females are considered. The most common form of delayed adolescent development is termed constitutional delay in growth and development, which may occur sporadically, or may be the familial pattern of growth and development or may reflect a suboptimal nutritional environment. The evalu

Prenatal methyl mercury exposure from fish consumption and child development: a review of evidence and perspectives from the Seychelles Child Development Study.

Evidence from an outbreak of methyl mercury (MeHg) poisoning in Iraq suggested that adverse effects of prenatal exposure on child development begin to appear at or above 10ppm measured in maternal hair. To test this hypothesis in a fish-eating population, we enrolled a cohort of 779 children (the main cohort) in the Seychelles Child Development Study (SCDS). The cohort was prenatally exposed to MeHg from maternal fish consumption, and the children started consuming fish products at about 1 year of age. Prenatal exposure was measured in maternal hair and recent postnatal exposure in the child's

Influences of early child nutritional status and home learning environment on child development in Vietnam.

Early childhood development plays a key role in a child's future health, educational success, and economic status. However, suboptimal early development remains a global challenge. This study examines the influences of quality of the home learning environment (HOME) and child stunting in the first year of life on child development. We used data collected from a randomized controlled trial of preconceptional micronutrient supplementation in Vietnam (n = 1,458). The Bayley Scales of Infant Development-III were used to assess cognition, language, and motor development domains at 2 years. At 1 yea

The Seychelles Child Development Study: two decades of collaboration.

The Seychelles Child Development Study represents two decades of collaboration between the Ministry of Health of Seychelles, a small island nation in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and the University of Rochester, a renowned academic and research institution in North America. The study has established itself as a model of strong longitudinal epidemiological studies and collaborative research between institutions in developed and developing countries. It has produced significant scientific findings and a large number of publications on the issue of methyl mercury from fish in the maternal diet

[Pseudotumoral lupus anetoderma. Child chorea. Development over 28 years].

The finding in a 40-year old and apparently healthy woman of a pseudotumoral lesion of the left arm which had gradually developed over a 9-year period led to a tentative clinical diagnosis of lupus anetoderma. This diagnosis was confirmed on the one hand by histological examination of the skin--which showed almost total disappearance of dermal elastic fibres, while the lympho-histiocytic infiltrate was so discreet that it excluded a deep lupus--and on the other hand by direct immunofluorescence, with lupus band on the lesion and a few abnormalities of the exposed and covered healthy skin. A hi

Household mental distress and child cognitive development in Ghana.

INTRODUCTION: Household mental wellbeing plays an important role in children's cognitive development, yet evidence from developing countries remains limited. This study examines the relationship between household mental distress and children's cognitive development in Ghana. METHODS: We use nationally representative longitudinal data from the Ghana Socioeconomic Panel Survey (2009-2010, 2013-2014, and 2018), comprising 8,755 children aged 5-17 years. Children's cognitive ability is measured using a composite index derived from the Digit Span Forward, Digit Span Backward, and Raven's Progressi

Maternal Tobacco Use During Pregnancy and Child Neurocognitive Development.

IMPORTANCE: Maternal tobacco use during pregnancy (MTDP) persists across the globe. Longitudinal assessment of the association of MTDP with neurocognitive development of offspring at late childhood is limited. OBJECTIVES: To examine whether MTDP is associated with child neurocognitive development at ages 9 to 12 years. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study included children aged 9 and 10 years at wave 1 (October 2016 to October 2018) and aged 11 to 12 years at a 2-year follow-up (wave 2, August 2018 to January 2021) across 21 US sites in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Developm

Cohort Profile: Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD).

PURPOSE: The Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development (QLSCD) was designed to examine the long-term associations of preschool physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development with biopsychosocial development across childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. METHODS: QLSCD is an ongoing prospective cohort including 2120 singletons born in 1997/1998 in the Canadian province of Quebec. So far, data have been collected annually or every 2 years from child ages 5 months to 21 years. The cohort currently includes 1245 participants. Data available include a range of environmental (e.g.

Prenatal stress: Effects on fetal and child brain development.

The impact of stress on brain health begins in the womb. Both animal and human studies have found that prenatal maternal stress affects the brain and behavior of the offspring. Stressful life events, exposure to a natural disaster, and symptoms of maternal anxiety and depression increase the risk for the child having a range of emotional, behavioral and/or cognitive problems in later life. These include depression, anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and/or conduct disorders. There is an increased risk for other outcomes also, including preterm delivery and reduced telome

Post-Partum Depression Effect on Child Health and Development.

While studies have shown the disastrous effects of post-partum depression (PPD) on children's behaviors, there is relatively lack of reliable data in Asian countries. This study examined the relative significance of maternal PPD in children's developmental disabilities at age four. In a longitudinal study design (2009), 1801 pregnant women attending in primary health centers of Mazandaran province in the north of Iran provided self-reports of depression from two to twelve postpartum weeks using Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Approximately four years later, the women experiencing

Early child development and developmental delay in indigenous communities.

Developmental delay is common and often responds to early intervention. As with other health outcomes, the prevalence of developmental delay may be socially determined. Children in many Indigenous communities experience increased risk for developmental delay. This article highlights special conditions in Indigenous communities related to child development. It addresses the challenges of screening and evaluation for developmental delay in the context of Indigenous cultures, and in settings where resources are often inadequate. It is clear that careful research on child development in Indigenous
