Case reports unlocked: Leveraging retrieval-augmented generation with large language models to advance research on psychological child maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Research on psychological child maltreatment is impeded by a lack of high-quality structured data. Crucial information is often documented in child protective services (CPS) case files, but only in narrative form. Recent research on the utilization of retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) methods with large language models (LLMs) for extracting structured data from narratives has demonstrated significant potential. RAG methods can facilitate automated classification, thereby eliminating the need for laborious annotation. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to extract structured data from narrative

Association of in utero HIV exposure with child brain structure and language development: a South African birth cohort study.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing population of children with in utero HIV exposure who are at risk of poor neurodevelopmental outcomes despite avoiding HIV infection. However, the underlying neurobiological pathways are not understood and neuroimaging studies are lacking. We aimed to investigate the cortical brain structure of children who are HIV-exposed and uninfected (HEU) compared to HIV-unexposed (HU) children and to examine the relationship with neurodevelopment. METHODS: The Drakenstein Child Health birth cohort study enrolled pregnant women from a high HIV prevalence area in South Afric

Associations Between Parent Mental State Language and Child Inhibitory Control in Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

PURPOSE: Children who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) are at increased risk for neurocognitive delays, which can have cascading effects on development. Associations between neurocognition and the content of parental language-specifically the use of mental state vocabulary-have been observed in typically hearing (TH) children. This study investigated the role of parental use of mental state language (e.g., vocabulary related to thought processes, desires, and emotions) in explaining variability in neurocognition in children who are D/HH. METHOD: Dyads of 62 TH and 69 D/HH children who wear

How reliable is the Internet for caregivers on their decision to vaccinate their child against influenza? Results from googling in two languages.

We have chosen Google, which is the most widely used search engine, to simulate a parent's experience in trying to find an answer on whether to have her/his child vaccinated against influenza. In doing this, we aimed to find out the chances that a parent with usual Internet searching tendencies may encounter right, wrong, and irrelevant answers in her/his search in the world wide web. We searched the Internet for an answer to the question "Should I make my child vaccinated against influenza?" by using the keywords "influenza", "vaccine", and "children" in two languages (English and Turkish). Examining Relationships Between Caregiver Concerns and Family and Child Characteristics in Kindergarten Children at Risk for Language and Literacy Disorders.

PURPOSE: Identification of children with language impairments often relies on caregivers raising concerns. However, caregivers may find it difficult to identify language impairment. This study examined how child and family characteristics were related to the likelihood that caregivers reported concerns about oral language and literacy to understand the possible underlying factors influencing identification. METHOD: In a larger longitudinal study, kindergarten children (N = 385) completed a battery of oral language and literacy assessments. The caregivers completed a questionnaire including de

Barriers and facilitators: Clinicians' opinions and experiences of telehealth before and after their use of a telehealth platform for child language assessment.

BACKGROUND: Despite emerging evidence of validity and reliability, speech and language therapists' (SLT) uptake of telehealth has been limited and barriers remain to the effective and confident use of this service model. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption to essential health services, including speech and language therapy assessment and intervention, meaning that telehealth must now be considered as part of the suite of service delivery options for all clinicians. AIMS: To explore the perceived barriers and facilitators of telehealth among community paediatric SLTs before

Linking obesity-associated genotype to child language development: the role of early-life neurology-related proteomics and brain myelination.

BACKGROUND: The association between childhood obesity and language development may be confounded by socio-environmental factors and attributed to comorbid pathways. METHODS: In a longitudinal Singaporean mother-offspring cohort, we leveraged trans-ancestry polygenic predictions of body mass index (BMI) to interrogate the causal effects of early-life BMI on child language development and its effects on molecular and neuroimaging measures. Leveraging large genome-wide association studies, we examined whether the link between obesity and language development is causal or due to a shared genetic

Exploring cross-linguistic differences in parental input and their associations with child expressive language in ASD: Bulgarian versus English comparison.

BACKGROUND: Parental input plays a central role in typical language acquisition and development. In autism spectrum disorder (ASD), characterized by social communicative and language difficulties, parental input presents an important avenue for investigation as a target for intervention. A rich body of literature has identified which aspects of grammatical complexity and lexical diversity are most associated with child language ability in both typical development and autism. Yet, the majority of these studies are conducted with English-speaking children, thus potentially overlooking nuances in

A process model of attachment-friend linkages: hostile attribution biases, language ability, and mother-child affective mutuality as intervening mechanisms.

This study identified mechanisms through which child-mother attachment security at 36 months was associated with mother- and teacher-reported friendship quality at 3rd grade. Data from a subsample of 1,071 children (536 boys) participating in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development were used. Separate structural equation models were tested for mother and teacher reports of peer functioning. For both models, the total indirect effect between attachment security and friendship quality was significant. Tests of specific indirect

Should Parents Only Use One Language with Their Autistic Children? The Relations Between Multilingualism, Children's Social Skills, and Parent-Child Communication.

PURPOSE: Parents of autistic children are often advised to use only one language to simplify their child's language acquisition. Often this recommendation orients towards the geographically predominant language, which may cause difficulties especially for minority-language families. On the other hand, scientific evidence suggests that multilingualism does not hinder language acquisition and that communicating in exclusively foreign languages may even impede social interaction. Therefore, we investigated how parent language use is linked to the social skills of 68 autistic children and to their

'Parents Are the First Tutors of Their Child': Parents' Perception of Responsibility on Practicing Speech-Language Home Program During COVID-19 Lockdown.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Some families faced difficulties accessing speech therapy in some areas of Malaysia and/or during the COVID-19 lockdown. Therefore, parent-mediated intervention could be one of the ways to solve this issue, as it has been proven to effectively improve communication skills among children with communication disorders. Hence, a Mandarin parental guidebook comprising a series of language stimulation activities was developed to explore the perception of parents of children with communication disorders, ranging from 3 to 6 years old, regarding the feasibility of (1) conduc
