Change in child mortality patterns after injuries in Sweden: a nationwide 14-year study.

INTRODUCTION: Sweden has one of the world's lowest child injury mortality rates, but injuries are still the leading cause of death among children. Child injury mortality in the country has been declining, but this decline seems to decrease recently. Our objective was therefore to further examine changes in the mortality of children's death from injury over time and to assess the contribution of various effects on mortality. The underlying hypothesis for this investigation is that the incidence of lethal injuries in children, still is decreasing and that this may be sex specific. PATIENTS AND

Excess child mortality after discharge from hospital in Kilifi, Kenya: a retrospective cohort analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore excess paediatric mortality after discharge from Kilifi District Hospital, Kenya, and its duration and risk factors. METHODS: Hospital and demographic data were used to describe post-discharge mortality and survival probability in children aged < 15 years, by age group and clinical syndrome. Cox regression models were developed to identify risk factors. FINDINGS: In 2004-2008, approximately 111,000 children were followed for 555,000 person-years. We analysed 14,971 discharges and 535 deaths occurring within 365 days of discharge. Mortality was higher in the post-dischar

Household context and child mortality in rural South Africa: the effects of birth spacing, shared mortality, household composition and socio-economic status.

BACKGROUND: Household characteristics are important influences on the risk of child death. However, little is known about this influence in HIV-endemic areas. We describe the effects of household characteristics on children's risk of dying in rural South Africa. METHODS: We use data describing the mortality of children younger than 5 years living in the Agincourt health and socio-demographic surveillance system study population in rural northeast South Africa during the period 1994-2008. Using discrete time event history analysis we estimate children's probability of dying by child characteri

Postmortem investigations and identification of multiple causes of child deaths: An analysis of findings from the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network.

BACKGROUND: The current burden of >5 million deaths yearly is the focus of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) to end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years old by 2030. To accelerate progression toward this goal, data are needed that accurately quantify the leading causes of death, so that interventions can target the common causes. By adding postmortem pathology and microbiology studies to other available data, the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) network provides comprehensive evaluations of conditions leading to death, in contrast to standar

The Effect of Ebola Virus Disease on Maternal and Child Health Services and Child Mortality in Sierra Leone, 2014-2015: Implications for COVID-19.

During Sierra Leone's 2014-2015 Ebola virus disease (EVD) epidemic, early reports warned of health system collapse and potential effects on other-cause mortality. These same warnings are reverberating during the COVID-19 pandemic. Consideration of the impacts of EVD on maternal and child health services from facility data can be instructive during COVID-19. We surveyed all peripheral healthcare units (PHUs) in Sierra Leone in October 2014 and March 2015 to assess closures, staffing, amenities, medicines, supplies, and service utilization during May 2014-January 2015 and October 2013-January 20

Differential Sex Trends in Infant, Neonatal, and Child Mortality Before and After Decentralization in Pakistan.

BACKGROUND: Differential sex child mortality is an important indicator of gender-based discrimination. Decentralization refers to the distribution of power from the federal to the provincial governments in Pakistan. Present research highlights the sex differential sex trends in infant, neonatal, and child mortality before and after decentralization. METHODOLOGY: The research utilizes the four waves of the Demographic and Health Survey from 1990 to 2018, applying Cox proportional regression in STATA. The sample size includes 164 005 total live births and 24 089 deaths across all years, with 82

Strategies for reducing child mortality due to sickle cell disease in Uganda: a narrative review.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a significant contributor to child mortality in Uganda, with an estimated 80% of children born with SCD dying before their fifth birthday, largely due to lack of early diagnosis and inadequate access to comprehensive care. Neonatal screening, although critical for early detection, is limited in Uganda, with coverage rates below 10%. This lack of early diagnosis often leads to delayed treatment and higher mortality rates. Data from recent studies highlight that implementing universal newborn screening could reduce SCD-related mortality by up to 50% if coupled w

The compounding effect of having HIV and a disability on child mortality among mothers in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Previous research on the association between maternal HIV status and child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa was published between 2005-2011. Findings from these studies showed a higher child mortality risk among children born to HIV-positive mothers. While the population of women with disabilities is growing in developing countries, we found no research that examined the association between maternal disability in HIV-positive mothers, and child mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. This study examined the potential compounding effect of maternal disability and HIV status on child mortali

Trends in Mortality by HIV/AIDS in Children in Mexico: Towards the Elimination of Mother-To-Child Transmission.

AIM OF THE STUDY: To examine mortality trends in children under 15 years of age due to HIV/AIDS in Mexico and describe their differences by insurance coverage. METHODS: Time series analysis of deaths from 1990-2019 through a Bayesian poisson regression model with linear splines and knots in 1994, 1997, and 2003. RESULTS: Overall, we observed a reduction in the mortality rate due to HIV from 2003 onwards, except in the group of 10-14 years. In the population covered with Social Security, mortality rates decreased in all age groups. However, in the group without Social Security or with Popular

The effect of human immunodeficiency virus infection on birthweight, and infant and child mortality in urban Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight, prematurity and intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR) are major determinants of child survival. Therefore, it is important to assess excess mortality due to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in populations where low birthweight is common. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted on 1385 children born to seropositive and seronegative women in urban Malawi. Children were regularly examined and tested for HIV. RESULTS: The mortality rate of children of HIV seropositive mothers was substantially higher (223/1000 at 12 months, 317/1000 at 24 months and

The risk of being Giovanni or Maria: Naming practices and child mortality during the demographic transition.

In the past, the choice of children's names was closely linked to life trajectories. This paper investigates the connection between children's names and child mortality during the demographic transition. Analysing data from the Veneto region (Northern Italy) and the Venetian parish of San Marco between 1816 and 1869, we find that traditional names are associated with higher neonatal mortality, particularly among girls. In contrast, children with unconventional names-those not named after grandparents or godparents or given the most frequent traditional names-face a lower risk of dying within t

Determinants of multiple modes of failure in child mortality in Bangladesh: fine and gray modeling approach.

BACKGROUND: Annually, millions of children under-five die from preventable causes. This study aimed to investigate risk factors associated with the time to death from several causes in children under-five in Bangladesh. METHODOLOGY: The data were extracted from the 2022 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS). A total of 13,119 under-five children were selected. Eleven causes of child mortality were categorized into disease, non-disease, and other causes. The event was death (in months), and children who were alive at the interview date were censored. This study employed the Cumulativ

Association does not imply prediction: the accuracy of birthweight in predicting child mortality and anthropometric failure.

PURPOSE: Epidemiologic studies often conflate the strength of association with predictive accuracy and build classification models based on arbitrarily selected probability cutoffs without considering the cost of misclassification. We illustrated these common pitfalls by building association, prediction, and classification models using birthweight as an exposure and child mortality and child anthropometric failure as outcomes. METHODS: Nationally representative samples of 188,819 and 164,113 children aged less than 5 years across India were used for our analysis of mortality and anthropometri

The impact of internal displacement on child mortality in post-earthquake Haiti: a difference-in-differences analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Haiti earthquake in 2010 resulted in 1.5 million internally displaced people (IDP), yet little is known about the impact of displacement on health. In this study, we estimate the impact of displacement on infant and child mortality and key health-behavior mechanisms. METHODS: We employ a difference-in-differences (DID) design with coarsened exact matching (CEM) to ensure comparability among groups with different displacement status using the 2012 Haiti Demographic and Health Survey (DHS). The participants are 21,417 births reported by a nationally representative sample of 14,2
