The family as a determinant of stunting in children living in conditions of extreme poverty: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition in children can be a consequence of unfavourable socioeconomic conditions. However, some families maintain adequate nutritional status in their children despite living in poverty. The aim of this study was to ascertain whether family-related factors are determinants of stunting in young Mexican children living in extreme poverty, and whether these factors differ between rural or urban contexts. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in one rural and one urban extreme poverty level areas in Mexico. Cases comprised stunted children aged between 6 and 23 months. Con

Family Psychosocial Assets, Child Behavioral Regulation, and Obesity.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Little attention has been given to the study of early childhood factors that protect against the development of obesity and severe obesity. We investigated whether exposure to familial psychosocial assets and risks in infancy (1-15 months) and early childhood (24-54 months) and child behavioral regulation in early childhood predict longitudinal change in BMI (2 to 15 years). METHODS: Participants included 1077 predominantly non-Hispanic, White, English-speaking mother-child dyads from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child

Child health on a dollar a day: some tentative cross-country comparisons.

Children living on a dollar a day-the international extreme poverty line-appear to have radically different chances of dying in childhood and being malnourished, depending on the country in which they live. In Kazakhstan, a child living on a dollar a day, has only a 10% risk of being underweight, while the risk facing a child living on a dollar a day in India is nearly 60%. The Kazakh child has a risk of less than 40 per 1000 of dying before his first birthday, while a child living on a dollar a day in Niger faces a risk of nearly 160 per 1000. Countries where mortality and malnutrition risks

African-American/white differences in the age of menarche: accounting for the difference.

Lifetime health disparity between African-American and white females begins with lower birthweight and higher rates of childhood overweight. In adolescence, African-American girls experience earlier menarche. Understanding the origins of these health disparities is a national priority. There is growing literature suggesting that the life course health development model is a useful framework for studying disparities. The purpose of this study was to quantify the influence of explanatory factors from key developmental stages on the age of menarche and to determine how much of the overall race di

The mediating role of food insecurity in the relationship between income poverty and depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation: A nationwide study of Korean adults.

BACKGROUND: Income poverty has been linked to poor mental health. Food insecurity, a consequence of poverty, has been identified as a determinant of mental health. We explored the mediating role of food insecurity in the relationship between income poverty and mental health problems. METHODS: This study utilized a nationally representative sample of 12,918 adults from the 2019-2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, among whom 3,896 were included in the depressive symptom analysis and 9,022 in the suicidal ideation analysis. Income poverty was defined as having a househol

The association of fitness and school absenteeism across gender and poverty: a prospective multilevel analysis in New York City middle schools.

PURPOSE: One-fifth to one-third of students in high poverty, urban school districts do not attend school regularly (missing ≥6 days/year). Fitness is shown to be associated with absenteeism, although this relationship may differ across poverty and gender subgroups. METHODS: Six cohorts of New York City public school students were followed up from grades 5 to 8 during 2006/2007-2012/2013 (n = 349,381). Stratified three-level longitudinal generalized linear mixed models were used to test the association between changes in fitness and 1-year lagged child-specific days absent across gender and po

Psychobiological influences on maternal sensitivity in the context of adversity.

This study evaluated prospective longitudinal relations among an index of poverty-related cumulative risk, maternal salivary cortisol, child negative affect, and maternal sensitivity across the first 2 postpartum years. Participants included 1,180 biological mothers residing in rural and predominantly low-income communities in the United States. Multilevel growth curve analyses indicated that an index of cumulative risk was positively associated with maternal cortisol across the postpartum (study visits occurring at approximately 7, 15, and 24 months postpartum) over and above effects for Afri

Poverty, race/ethnicity, and psychiatric disorder: a study of rural children.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effect of poverty on the prevalence of psychiatric disorder in rural Black and White children. METHODS: A representative sample of 541 Black children and 379 White children aged 9 to 17 was drawn from 4 predominantly rural counties. Structured interviews with parents and children collected information on psychiatric disorders, absolute and relative poverty, and risk factors for psychiatric disorder. RESULTS: Three-month prevalence of psychiatric disorder was similar to that found in other community samples (20%). Federal criteria for poverty were met by 18

Child Neglect in the Legal System: A 50-Year Review of Israeli Court Rulings.

Child neglect is the most prevalent form of child maltreatment reported to child protection services in many countries, yet research in this area remains underdeveloped. This study examined how Israeli courts define and interpret child neglect in practice, addressing the significant gap between theoretical definitions and legal operationalization. A systematic analysis of 68 Israeli court judgments spanning 50 years was conducted using thematic analysis. Cases were selected from "Nevo," a legal database, based on specific criteria involving allegations or substantiation of child neglect, with

Neighbourhood and family influences on the cognitive ability of children in the British National Child Development Study.

This paper investigates the association between family poverty, the level of deprivation in electoral wards and children's cognitive test scores using data from the second generation in the 1991 sweep of the British National Child Development Study (1958 birth cohort). Family poverty has a significant association with lower test scores in children of all ages (4-18 years). Neighbourhood poverty has a significant association with lower test scores in children aged 4-5 years which, though somewhat attenuated, is independent of other socioeconomic indicators. Among children aged between 6 and 9 y

Social, economic, and political factors in progress towards improving child survival in developing nations.

Child mortality is a persistent health problem faced by developing nations. In 2000 the United Nations (UN) established a set of high priority goals to address global problems of poverty and health, the Millennium Development Goals, which address extreme poverty, hunger, primary education, child mortality, maternal health, infectious diseases, environmental sustainability, and partnerships for development. Goal 4 aims to reduce by two thirds, between 2000 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate in developing countries. In sub-Saharan Africa from 2000 to 2006 these rates have only been reduced

Childhood poverty, early motherhood and adult social exclusion.

Childhood poverty and early parenthood are both high on the current political agenda. The key new issue that this research addresses is the relative importance of childhood poverty and of early motherhood as correlates of outcomes later in life. How far are the 'effects' of early motherhood on later outcomes due to childhood precursors, especially experience of childhood poverty? Subsidiary questions relate to the magnitude of these associations, the particular levels of childhood poverty that prove most critical, and whether, as often assumed, only teenage mothers are subsequently disadvantag

Effects of a monthly unconditional cash transfer starting at birth on family investments among US families with low income.

How does unconditional income for families in poverty affect parental investments for their young children? Mothers in four US metropolitan areas were randomized to receive a monthly unconditional cash transfer of either $333 per month (high) or $20 per month (low) for the first several years after childbirth. During the first 3 years, high-cash gift households spent more money on child-specific goods and more time on child-specific early learning activities than the low-cash gift group. Few changes were evident in other core household expenditures. Compared with low-cash gift families, high-c

Socioeconomic risk and the longitudinal child lifetime prevalence of child protection involvement.

BACKGROUND: North American studies find that geographic indicators of disadvantage, such as concentrated poverty, significantly increase the risk of child protection involvement. Despite having one of the most extensive family support systems and progressive income redistribution policies in North America, the Canadian province of Québec still faces geographic variations in socioeconomic conditions that remain a major risk factor for child protection involvement. OBJECTIVE: This study asks how child protection involvement is distributed across socioeconomically distinct geographic areas of th

Austerity policy and child health in European countries: a systematic literature review.

BACKGROUND: To analyse the impact of austerity measures taken by European governments as a response to the 2008 economic and financial crisis on social determinants on child health (SDCH), and child health outcomes (CHO). METHODS: A systematic literature review was carried out in Medline (Ovid), Embase, Web of Science, PsycInfo, and Sociological abstracts in the last 5 years from European countries. Studies aimed at analysing the Great Recession, governments' responses to the crisis, and its impact on SDCH were included. A narrative synthesis of the results was carried out. The risk of bias w

Equity and child-survival strategies.

Recent advances in child survival have often been at the expense of increasing inequity. Successive interventions are applied to the same population sectors, while the same children in other sectors consistently miss out, leading to a trend towards increasing inequity in child survival. This is particularly important in the case of pneumonia, the leading cause of child death, which is closely linked to poverty and malnutrition, and for which effective community-based case management is more difficult to achieve than for other causes of child death. The key strategies for the prevention of chil

Child domestic labour in Pakistan: a narrative review.

Child domestic workers are children who are hired to work in households by the owners for household chores. In 1996, up to 8.3% of all child labour cases in Pakistan involved domestic chores. Poverty is one of the most common and significant factors for child domestic labour in Pakistan. Studies have shown that if the parents are uneducated or do not value education, there is a high likelihood of children being involved in child domestic labour. Girls make up a large portion of child domestic workers compared to boys, and are more affected by child domestic labour. The victims of child domesti

Association of pre-adolescent adverse childhood experiences with adolescent cholesterol levels: findings from the A-CHILD longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are well known to be associated with poor health outcomes in adulthood. However, its effect on adolescent health remains underexplored, particularly, how cumulative ACE exposure during childhood influences cholesterol levels in adolescence. This study aims to investigate the longitudinal association between cumulative ACE exposure during elementary school and cholesterol levels in middle school using population-based longitudinal study. METHOD: We used longitudinal data from the Adachi Child Health Impact of Living Difficulty (A-CHILD) study wh

Do laypersons conflate poverty and neglect?

OBJECTIVE: Child neglect is often initially identified via adults who come into contact with children and report their suspicions to the authorities. Little is known about what behaviors laypersons view as constituting neglect and hence worth reporting. We examined laypersons' perceptions of neglect and poverty, particularly how these factors independently and jointly shaped laypersons' decisions about what warrants official reporting of neglect, and how laypersons' socioeconomic background related to their decisions. HYPOTHESES: We anticipated that neglect would be correctly perceived as suc
