Morphological and Histological Variations of the Reproductive Organs During the Annual Cycle in a Neotropical Bat: Peters' Ghost-Faced Bat Mormoops megalophylla (Chiroptera: Mormoopidae).

Recent studies have emphasized the ecological significance of bats as insect regulators. This recognition has prompted an increased scientific interest in Mormoops megalophylla, a notable neotropical insectivorous bat species. The extant literature on its biology remains limited and substantial knowledge gaps persist, particularly regarding its reproductive cycle. This study sought to examine morphological and histological variations in the reproductive organs of male and female M. megalophylla over the annual cycle to elucidate the stages of its reproductive process. Over the course of the ye

Changes in baseline and stress-induced glucocorticoid levels during the active period in free-ranging male and female little brown myotis, Myotis lucifugus (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae).

Baseline and stress-responsive glucocorticoid (GC) levels were characterized during the active period in free-ranging male and reproductive female little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus). Bats were trapped and blood was sampled within 3 min of capture at two maternity sites during the summer and at one swarming site prior to hibernation in New England. Both GC hormones, cortisol and corticosterone, were detected, with cortisol accounting for an average of approximately 95% of total circulating GCs. Samples collected at the dusk emergence and after the first return from feeding showed significan

[Biological characteristics and permissiveness to viruses of diploid kidney cells strain from the bat Nathusius' pipistrelle (Pipistrellus nathusii Keyserling & Blasius, 1839; Chiroptera: Microchiroptera: Vespertilionidae)].

INTRODUCTION: Bats are an epidemiologically important natural reservoir of viruses of various taxonomic groups, including causative agents of especially dangerous infections of humans and animals. Considering the relevance of arbovirus infections, it seems advisable to study the spectrum of the sensitivity of cells derived from bats inhabiting and migrating on the territory of the Russian Federation to causative agents of vector-borne diseases of animals. The study aimed to obtain a diploid strain of cells from renal tissue of bats Pipistrellus nathusii and to investigate its biological charact

Demodecid mites (Acariformes, Demodecidae) in brown longeared bat Plecotus auritus (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) – second record in the world and systematic status of Demodex chiropteralis Hirst, 1921.

As many as 26 species of parasitic mites of the Demodecidae family have thus far been described in the Chiroptera, of which only three have been found in bats from Europe. The first of the latter group was Demodex chiropteralis Hirst, 1921, described on the basis of only two females originating from one bat from Great Britain; an observation which has never been made since. The present study reports the discovery of both male and female D. chiropteralis in Poland, together with other unknown demodecid mites which may well belong to new species. The present study confirms the existence of D. ch

Morphological and molecular characterization of Neodiplostomum vaucheri Dubois, 1983 (Digenea: Diplostomidae) from Trachops cirrhosus (Spix, 1823) (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) in the southern Peruvian Amazon using third-generation sequencing (Oxford Nanopore).

Neodiplostomum vaucheri Dubois, 1983 is a digenean trematode originally described from the intestine of the woolly false vampire bat, Chrotopterus auritus (Peters, 1856), in the northwestern Peruvian Amazon. Decades later, it was also reported from the fringe-lipped bat, Trachops cirrhosis (Spix, 1823), in Ecuador. During a helminthological survey of phyllostomid bats at the Kawsay Biological Station in Madre de Dios, southeastern Peruvian Amazonia, specimens of Neodiplostomum Railliet, 1919 were recovered from the intestine of T. cirrhosus. Morphological comparisons with the holotype confirme

[Laboratory diagnosis of rabies in the west region of São Paulo State].

The Pólo da Alta Sorocabana laboratory, Presidente Prudente, SP, Brazil, and the Biological Institute in São Paulo State, performed an evaluation of rabies diagnosis from 1996 to 2003 in the west region of São Paulo State. For the tests, the laboratories used direct immunofluorescence and mice inoculation in 4,950 samples, that were sent for analysis involving dogs, cats, cattle, chiroptera (bats) and other animals. According to the results, the laboratories found 74 positive samples; of which 58 (78.4%) were non-hematophagous bats and 16 (21.6%) related to cattle. The present epidemiological

Evolution of Mhc-DRB introns: implications for the origin of primates.

Introns are generally believed to evolve too rapidly and too erratically to be of much use in phylogenetic reconstructions. Few phylogenetically informative intron sequences are available, however, to ascertain the validity of this supposition. In the present study the supposition was tested on the example of the mammalian class II major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) genes of the DRB family. Since the Mhc genes evolve under balancing selection and are believed to recombine or rearrange frequently, the evolution of their introns could be expected to be particularly rapid and subject to scram

The role of wild mammals in the maintenance of Rift Valley fever virus.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a zoonotic arbovirus affecting primarily domestic ruminants and humans. Numerous vector species are known or implicated in the transmission of RVFV. The role of mammals in the maintenance of RVFV, and the existence of a wild mammal reservoir in the epidemiologic cycle of RVFV, remain largely unknown. Our objective is to present a detailed review of studies undertaken on RVFV, often associated with wild mammals, with the aim of focusing future research on potential reservoirs of the virus. Natural and experimental infections related to RVFV in several mammalian

Isolation of a phylogenetically distinct rabies virus from a tufted capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) in Brazil.

A rabies virus isolate (BRmk1358 strain) was discovered from a rabid tufted capuchin monkey in Brazil. The present study determined the nucleotide sequence of the BRmk1358 strain and compared with the rabies viruses isolated from marmosets and other animals in the Americas. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the BRmk1358 strain formed a lineage distant from that of marmoset rabies virus within the Chiroptera-related rabies virus cluster. This result suggests that the source of rabies infection in the tufted capuchin monkey may have been bat, and that they have a risk to act as rabies reservoir

West nile virus antibodies in bats from New Jersey and New York.

Eighty-three serum samples were obtained from big brown (Eptesicus fuscus), little brown (Myotis lucifugus), and northern long-eared (Myotis septentriotalis) bats (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), from New Jersey and New York (USA) between July and October 2002. Samples were analyzed for neutralizing antibodies to West Nile virus (WNV) and St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) virus. One little brown bat and one northern long-eared bat tested positive for WNV neutralizing antibodies. No bats had antibodies to SLE virus. This was the first large-scale investigation of WNV infection in bats in New Jersey.

Species determination of Brazilian mammals implicated in the epidemiology of rabies based on the control region of mitochondrial DNA.

Identification of animals that are decomposing or have been run over or burnt and cannot be visually identified is a problem in the surveillance and control of infectious diseases. Many of these animals are wild and represent a valuable source of information for epidemiologic research as they may be carriers of an infectious agent. This article discusses the results obtained using a method for identifying mammals genetically by sequencing their mitochondrial DNA control region. Fourteen species were analyzed and identified. These included the main reservoirs and transmitters of rabies virus, n

Original Leptospira spp. in island's native terrestrial mammals: A case study in Pteropus spp. bats of New Caledonia.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonosis that occurs in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Chiroptera are known to be a formidable reservoir of zoonotic pathogens, including leptospires. The epidemiology of leptospirosis in bats in the Pacific Islands is poorly known, both in terms of prevalence and in terms of the bacterial strains involved. A strong host specificity between leptospiral strains and their mammalian reservoir is recognized. This phenomenon has notably been studied recently in bat communities, providing strong evidence of co-evolution. In New Caledonia, a biodiversity hots
