Willingness to pay for influenza vaccination among the elderly in Vietnam: A triple-bounded dichotomous choice analysis of economic and behavioral determinants.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal influenza causes significant morbidity among the elderly, yet vaccination remains an out-of-pocket expense in Vietnam. This study evaluated the willingness to pay (WTP) for influenza vaccination and its determinants among the elderly in Vietnam. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in Can Tho City, Vietnam (N = 1486). We employed the Contingent Valuation Method with a Triple-Bounded Dichotomous Choice framework. Data were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression to identify predictors of WTP and interval regression to estimate the mean WT

Ethanol self-administration reduced the efficacy of a behavioral intervention to decrease cocaine choice in socially housed male and female monkeys.

In the clinical population, cocaine is frequently used sequentially or simultaneously with alcohol, and this pattern is linked to poorer treatment outcomes for cocaine use disorder (CUD). Yet, the impact of ethanol on cocaine reinforcement when non-drug alternatives are available remains unclear. In this study, we examined the effects of ethanol self-administration (1.5g/kg, one hour prior) on cocaine reinforcement under a concurrent cocaine vs. food choice (0.001-0.1mg/kg/injection) procedure in eight socially housed male and female cynomolgus monkeys. Daily sessions consisted of an initial 1

Effects of early life stress paired with adolescent alcohol consumption on two-bottle choice alcohol drinking behaviors in mice.

BACKGROUND: In humans, early life stress (ELS) is associated with an increased risk for developing both alcohol use disorder (AUD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). We previously used an infant footshock model that produces stress-enhanced fear learning (SEFL) in rats and mice and increases aversion-resistant alcohol drinking in rats to explore this shared predisposition. The goal of the current study was to extend this model of comorbid PTSD and AUD to male and female C57BL/6J mice. METHODS: Acute ELS was induced using 15 footshocks on postnatal day (PND) 17. In adulthood, alcohol d

A behavioral choice analysis of the role of life events during early nonabstinent natural recovery from alcohol use disorder.

Prior research supported a behavioral choice analysis of the role of life events in posttreatment drinking among abstinence-seeking inpatients with alcohol use disorder (AUD). This study investigated the generality of those relationships among persons attempting "natural" recovery involving moderation drinking. We had two hypotheses: (1) The likelihood of drinking after an event would be related to the degree of alcohol-related disruption in the life-health area of the event. (2) Event-related drinking episodes would be quantitatively greater than event-unrelated episodes. Participants (N = 83

Healthy behavioral choices and cancer screening in persons living with HIV/AIDS are different by sex and years since HIV diagnosis.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of non-AIDS-related malignancies is on the rise among people aging with HIV population, but the evidence on healthy behaviors including cancer screening practices in this population subgroup is extremely limited. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of healthy behaviors and sex-specific cancer screening among persons living with HIV, by sex and time since HIV diagnosis. METHODS: We included 517 persons living with HIV from the Florida Cohort. Data were obtained from the baseline and follow-up questionnaires, electronic medical records, and Enhanced HIV/AIDS Report

Key theoretical frameworks for intervention: understanding and promoting behavior change in parent-infant feeding choices in a low-income population.

The early introduction of solids to infants is a risk factor associated with later health problems including allergies, overweight, and diabetes. The Infant Feeding Series (TIFS), a newly designed curriculum that promotes the appropriate transition to solids through parenting education and behavior change among low-income mothers, used the Theory of Planned Behavior and the Transtheoretical Model of Change to develop TIFS curricular foci and activities. Using a pre-post design, pilot study results indicate that after exposure to the TIFS curriculum, mothers had significantly increased knowledg

Forebrain circuitry involved in effort-related choice: Injections of the GABAA agonist muscimol into ventral pallidum alter response allocation in food-seeking behavior.

Organisms often make effort-related choices based upon assessments of motivational value and work requirements. Nucleus accumbens dopamine is a critical component of the brain circuitry regulating work output in reinforcement-seeking behavior. Rats with accumbens dopamine depletions reallocate their instrumental behavior away from food-reinforced tasks that have high response requirements, and instead they select a less-effortful type of food-seeking behavior. The ventral pallidum is a brain area that receives substantial GABAergic input from nucleus accumbens. It was hypothesized that stimula

Impact of high-speed sintering and choice of preshaded monochrome or multilayered blanks on fatigue behavior of 4 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: High-speed sintering allows the rapid fabrication of esthetic restorations with adequate flexural strength. However, data on the fatigue behavior of high-speed sintered 4 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (4Y-TZP) are lacking. PURPOSE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to examine the effect of high-speed sintering and the preshading of blanks (monochrome versus multilayer) on the fatigue behavior of 4Y-TZP ceramics. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Four-point flexural strength specimens (N=405) were fabricated from high-speed sintered multilayer 4Y-TZP (Z

Unraveling the effects of the Ebola experience on behavior choices during COVID-19 in Liberia: a mixed-methods study across successive outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: The burden of the COVID-19 pandemic in terms of morbidity and mortality differentially affected populations. Between and within populations, behavior change was likewise heterogeneous. Factors influencing precautionary behavior adoption during COVID-19 have been associated with multidimensional aspects of risk perception; however, the influence of lived experiences during other recent outbreaks on behavior change during COVID-19 has been less studied. METHODS: To consider how the direct disease experience ("near misses") and behavior change during the 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease

Decreased activation of lateral orbitofrontal cortex during risky choices under uncertainty is associated with disadvantageous decision-making and suicidal behavior.

Decision-making impairment has been linked to orbitofrontal cortex lesions and to different disorders including substance abuse, aggression and suicidal behavior. Understanding the neurocognitive mechanisms of these impairments could facilitate the development of effective treatments. In the current study, we aimed to explore the neural and cognitive basis of poor decision-making ability associated with the vulnerability to suicidal behavior, a public health issue in most western countries. Twenty-five not currently depressed male patients, 13 of whom had a history of suicidal acts (suicide at

Why Lyme disease is common in the northern US, but rare in the south: The roles of host choice, host-seeking behavior, and tick density.

Lyme disease is common in the northeastern United States, but rare in the southeast, even though the tick vector is found in both regions. Infection prevalence of Lyme spirochetes in host-seeking ticks, an important component to the risk of Lyme disease, is also high in the northeast and northern midwest, but declines sharply in the south. As ticks must acquire Lyme spirochetes from infected vertebrate hosts, the role of wildlife species composition on Lyme disease risk has been a topic of lively academic discussion. We compared tick-vertebrate host interactions using standardized sampling met

The choice of embedding media affects image quality, tissue R2* , and susceptibility behaviors in post-mortem brain MR microscopy at 7.0T.

PURPOSE: The quality and precision of post-mortem MRI microscopy may vary depending on the embedding medium used. To investigate this, our study evaluated the impact of 5 widely used media on: (1) image quality, (2) contrast of high spatial resolution gradient-echo (T1 and T2* -weighted) MR images, (3) effective transverse relaxation rate (R2* ), and (4) quantitative susceptibility measurements (QSM) of post-mortem brain specimens. METHODS: Five formaldehyde-fixed brain slices were scanned using 7.0T MRI in: (1) formaldehyde solution (formalin), (2) phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), (3) deuter

High frequency post-pause word choices and task-dependent speech behavior characterize connected speech in individuals with mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by progressive cognitive decline, including impairments in speech production and fluency. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a prodrome of AD, has also been linked with changes in speech behavior but to a more subtle degree. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether speech behavior immediately following both filled and unfilled pauses (post-pause speech behavior) differs between individuals with MCI and healthy controls (HCs), and how these differences are influenced by the cognitive demands of various speech tasks. METHODS: Transc

Improving physical activity using a single personalized consequence-based approach-avoidance training: Effects on self-reported behaviors, attitudes, and choices.

OBJECTIVE: Despite their potential in improving health behaviors, such as physical activity (PA), the effectiveness of interventions targeting automatic precursors remains contrasted. We examined the effects of a single session of ABC training - a personalized consequence-based approach-avoidance training - on PA, relative to an active control condition and a control condition. METHODS: Middle-aged US participants (N = 360, 53 % of women) either completed an ABC training (being instructed to approach PA to obtain self-relevant consequences), an approach-avoidance training (approaching PA in 9

Assessing behavioral reallocation after acute environmental manipulations using an asymmetric cocaine versus sucrose choice task in male and female rats.

RATIONALE: Maladaptive drug choice is a defining component of substance use disorders; whereby drug misuse persists despite adverse consequences. A goal of behavioral interventions, such as contingency management programs, is to promote reallocation of behavior towards adaptive pursuits. The neurobiological mechanisms that govern behavioral reallocation in the context of ongoing cocaine use remain poorly understood.
