Two cases of tuberculous arthritis in a joint affected with chondrocalcinosis are reported. No similar cases have been published. Diagnosis was established by demonstration of the tubercle bacillus and calcium pyrophosphate crystals in the joint fluid. Both patients were elderly French females. One patient with involvement of a knee required amputation. The other patient had involvement of a shoulder and developed inferior dislocation of the humeral head and drooping shoulder despite antituberculous therapy. Concomitant occurrence of the two conditions was apparently coincidental but may have

Chondrocalcinosis, defined as radiopaque deposits in the joint cartilages and in semilunar cartilages of the knee joint, develops frequently in patients in whom osteochondritis dissecans is diagnosed after the epiphyseal line of the distal end of the femur is closed. Chondrocalcinosis occurred in 2/3 of the cases surgically treated for osteochondritis. The incidence was greater than in knees treated by arthrotomy for ruptured semilunar cartilages. However, the latter show chondrocalcinosis much more frequently in patients without history of injury or arthrotomy. Osteochondritis patients with c

Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate deposition disease (CPPD) is a metabolic arthropathy characterized by gross calcium pyrophosphate crystals deposition within articular cartilage, in the periarticular and articular tissues. The disease is also called by other names such as pseudogout or chondrocalcinosis. Deposition of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals provokes an inflammation within the synovial membrane followed by degenerative changes in cartilage and bone. The underlying mechanism for increased intraarticular accumulation of calcium crystals is not known. CPPD is fairly common conditi

Idiopathic familial chondrocalcinosis was found in five members of a family. The clinical features of the disease were morning stiffness, pain and limitation of motion of the dorsolumbar spine in four of the five members, associated with arthritis of the small joints of the hands in three, shoulder periarthritis in two and costal cartilage pain in one. Radiologically, four of the five patients had multiple intervertebral disk calcifications, mainly located at the nucleus pulposus area. Three of them also had periarticular calcific deposits, associated with costal cartilage calcifications and d

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical and radiographic osteoarticular features of patients with Gitelman Syndrome (GS) in a prospective Chinese cohort.
METHODS: Patients with clinically and genetically diagnosed GS were prospectively and systematically screened for osteoarticular involvement. Clinical manifestations, laboratory parameters, and radiographic findings were recorded. Patients were categorized as: chondrocalcinosis, or calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD), non-chondrocalcinosis osteoarticular abnormalities, and non-radiographic GS. Group differences were analyzed.
RESULTS: A

INTRODUCTION: Sclerochoroidal calcifications is a rare condition corresponding to senile plaques due to the deposition of calcium and phosphate in the sclera and choroid. It is an elderly patient's pathology. In most cases, it is idiopathic. However, some patients have systemic disorders leading to disturbances in phosphocalcic metabolism, which are at the origin of this disorder. A check-up is therefore necessary to detect them.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 65 year old patient admitted to the ophthalmology department for a renewal of optical correction. The patient is known to have a

Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease is a joint pathology that affects joints, fibrocartilages and periarticular structures. Chondrocalcinosis refers to CPPD deposits on the X-ray that does not summarize the disease. It willingly affects the knees and the wrists, but all the joints can be affected. There are primitive and secondary forms of the disease to particularly look for in patients less than 50 years. The diagnosis is usually easy with standard radiography, ultrasound and synovial fluid analysis that shows the microcrystals. The therapeutics of the acute att

Gitelman's syndrome (GS) is a rare disease with autosomal recessive trait, characterized by hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, metabolic alkalosis, hypocalciuria and hyperkinemic hyperaldosteronism. While muscle weakness, tetany, stomachache, nausea and fever are very common, it could sometimes be completely asymptomatic as is the case in our patient. It is generally benign, but some severe complications like growth retardation and, though rare, paralysis and cardiac arrest could also be seen. A 57-year-old male patient sent to our hospital for further examination because of hypokalemia was diagnose

Patients with preauricular masses present with a wide range of pathologies, the most common of which are neoplasms of the parotid gland, metastatic or inflammatory disease, and enlarged periparotid lymph nodes. Other possibilities include lesions that arise from the skull base or the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Chondrocalcinosis is a common age-related phenomenon that has a predilection for fibrocartilage. Although it can involve any joint, the knee is by far the most common site; involvement of the TMJ is very rare. We describe a case of chondrocalcinosis of the TMJ that manifested as a pr

OBJECTIVES: Extracellular inorganic pyrophosphate (ePPi) inhibits certain forms of pathological mineralization while promoting others. Three molecules involved in ePPi regulation are important candidates for the development of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate chondrocalcinosis (CPPD CC). These include ANKH, ectonucleotide pyrophosphatase (ENPP1) and TNAP. We have previously showed that genetic variation in ANKH is a cause of autosomal dominant familial CC and also some sporadic cases of CPPD CC. We now investigate the possible role of ENPP1 and TNAP in CPPD CC.
METHODS: Exons, untranslated reg

We report the case of a 45-year-old man with a long history of chondrocalcinosis and recurrent painless suprapatellar swelling. Over the 3 months before his admission, the swelling had become persistent and extended 10 cm proximal to the patella on the anterior aspect of the thigh. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an enlarged suprapatellar pouch that was completely separated from the knee joint cavity by a suprapatellar membrane. Arthroscopic treatment consisted of complete removal of the membrane, creating a passage to the articular cavity, and debridement of the synovial calcifications. T

The association between articular chondrocalcinosis and osteoarthritis was sought by studying 92 patients over the age of 60. Anteroposterior and lateral X-ray projections of knees, hands and wrists were studied for the presence of chondrocalcinosis and osteoarthritis. Of the 92 patients (60 males, 32 females), six had chondrocalcinosis of the knees; two of them also had it in the wrist. The six cases with chondrocalcinosis were compared to the 86 cases without, for the presence of osteoarthritis in the different compartments of the knees, intercarpal joints (IC) and metacarpophalangeal joints

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present research was to test the diagnostic value of ultrasonography (US) to detect chondrocalcinosis in the hyalin cartilage (HC).
METHOD: This was tested on both knees of 21 selected patients with a history of unilateral HC and 19 controls. In Group, I (US), evaluation was performed on selected knees. The selection was based on the evidence of HC on previous radiographs. In Group II, US examination of the contralateral side of the same cohort was performed first and radiographic picture was done as a second step.
RESULTS: Ultrasonically, detectable calcification

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine the influence of chondrocalcinosis on MR imaging in the detection of meniscal tears.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was performed of knee MR imaging and arthroscopy records from two university hospitals between 1996 and 1998. Seventy individuals had radiographic evidence of chondrocalcinosis and underwent knee MR imaging. Thirty-seven of these individuals had undergone arthroscopy for further evaluation of their symptoms. MR imaging sensitivity and specificity in the detection of medial and lateral meniscal tears were calculated in these 37

Chondrocalcinosis is an important, common, age-related joint disease. Its characteristic is the deposit of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals in hyaline and fibrous cartilages. Occasionally, it is a familial disorder; more often, it is a sporadic disease of adults sometimes in association with hormonal and metabolic disorders. The relationship between CC and diabetes mellitus (DM) is disputed. In this study the prevalence of radiographic CC (knee and/or wrist) in 184 DM patients was evaluated. For comparison two matched groups without DM were studied: i) 184 consecutive unselected out-pa

The authors describe the main clinical and radiological findings of common enthesopathic disorders-spondylarthritis (SpA), chondrocalcinosis/calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate crystal deposition disease (CPPD CDD) and diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), stressing similarities and differences which may help in the differential diagnosis. They emphasize the clinical presentation of the "pseudoankylosing spondylitis" forms of CPPD CDD. They also review the most relevant genes and molecular mechanisms associated with these conditions and with another enthesopathic disorder with high prev
