BACKGROUND: Chylous ascites is a rare complication in colorectal surgery with limited evidence.
AIM: To systematically review all available evidence to describe the incidence, clinical presentation, risk factors and management strategies.
METHODS: The systematic review was performed through PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane and cross-checked up to November 2020. The data collated included: Demographics, indications (benign vs malignant), site of disease, surgical approach, extent of lymphadenectomy, day to and method of diagnosis of chylous ascites and management strategies.
RESULTS: A t

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to define outcome of treatments of refractory chylous ascites using peritoneovenous shunts (PVSs).
METHODS: Clinical data of patients with refractory chylous ascites treated with PVSs between 1992 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed. The primary end point was clinical benefit, defined as cured, improved, or poor results; secondary end points were complications and reinterventions.
RESULTS: Seventeen patients (eight female [47%]; median age, 47 years [range, 19-78 years]) with refractory chylous ascites were studied. This group represented 6% of 284

The utility and minimal invasiveness of ultrasound-guided intranodal lymphangiography have already been reported by several researchers. Although ultrasound-guided intranodal lymphangiography is known to be not technically difficult in general, a patient's edematous groin due to hypoalbuminemia resulting from chylous ascites made it too challenging to detect and prick the lymph nodes precisely. This report describes a 71-year-old female with refractory chylous ascites due to an operation for an extrahepatic bile duct cancer, who was successfully treated by computed tomography (CT)-guided intra

Chylous ascites is a rare complication following pancreaticoduodenectomy. We report on a case of chylous ascites following pancreaticoduodenectomy in a 76-year-old patient diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. There are various known conservative management strategies, including dietary measures or total parenteral nutrition. Unfortunately, conservative treatment-with total parenteral nutrition and fasting over a period of 4 weeks-was not successful in the present case. The daily output volume of chylous ascites was up to 2500 ml/day. Based on clinical experiences with successfully treated lymphoc

INTRODUCTION: The development of chylous ascites is usually associated with trauma, iatrogenic or otherwise. Blunt abdominal trauma producing hyperextension or hyperflexion may cause disruption to lymphatic vessels causing chylous ascites.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: This report describes the case of a 38-year-old gentleman who presented to the emergency department with severe abdominal pain after completing a triathlon. As the patient was in severe pain, an abdominal CT was performed which demonstrated a possible mid gut volvulus. Subsequent laparotomy noted a significant volume of intra-abdominal

CASE: A 74-year-old woman had a history of transitional papillary carcinoma of the urethra, treated with brachytherapy and radiation therapy. She was hospitalized for exploration of chylous ascites. After a work-up, we concluded it was due to chyloperitoneum caused by a post-radiation lymphatic opening. Conservative treatment, including a low-fat high-protein diet, together with medium-chain triglycerides, led to the drying of the ascites.
DISCUSSION: Development of chylous ascites after radiation therapy requires first of all a search for a tumor recurrence. Nonetheless, radiation induction

Chylous ascites and chylothorax have rarely been reported as a consequence of severe right heart failure. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of both disorders occurring as a result of ischaemic cardiomyopathy. The autopsy findings and possible mechanisms of production are discussed.

Medical records of 9 cats with chylous ascites that underwent exploratory celiotomy were reviewed. In 7 cats, chylous ascites was associated with intra-abdominal neoplasia: 4 cats had an unresectable tumor (hemangiosarcoma, 3 cats; paraganglioma, 1 cat) within the mesenteric root; 2 had malignant lymphoma of the small intestine and mesenteric lymph nodes; and 1 had lymphangiosarcoma of the abdominal wall. In 2 cats, chylous ascites was associated with nonneoplastic diseases: 1 cat had severe biliary cirrhosis and an extrahepatic portosystemic shunt; the other had steatitis caused by vitamin E

We report the case of a man in his 50s who presented with pleural and pericardial effusions, chylous ascites, lymphadenopathy, weight loss and fatigue. Extensive evaluation ruled out malignancy, infection and many autoimmune conditions, but test results were positive for antinuclear antibodies and anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies. A kidney biopsy showed evidence of lupus nephritis (class 5). He ultimately was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus and lupus nephritis. The patient began immunosuppressive treatment, and the manifestations started to resolve. Recognition of systemic lupus

Chylous ascites is infequent after abdominal surgery. We describe the case of a 43-year-old man with portal cavernomatosis who underwent surgery to insert a splenorenal shunt, which was not placed due to the absence of signs of portal hypertension. On postoperative day 20, the patient developed abdominal distension and mild dyspnea and was diagnosed with chylous ascites, which was related to the surgery. The patient was initially treated with diet and diuretics, with no clinical response, and consequently octreotide therapy was started. Four days later, the ascites was almost resolved and an u

Chylous ascites is a rare complication of abdominal surgery in children. Particularly, reports of postoperative chylous ascites are rare. This report describes the very rare case of a 10-month-old girl complicated by chylous ascites after resection of a choledochal cyst with a Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy, who was successfully treated medically. To date, we have found a few cases of postoperative chylous ascites in the paediatric literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of chylous ascites after the resection of a choledochal cyst in a child who was successfully treat

OBJECTIVE: To review the causes and test the diagnostic accuracy of chylous ascites in 22 cases hospitalized in recent years and to compare the efficacy of current investigative procedures with those of previous decades.
METHODS: 22 patients with chylous ascites were studied; they were admitted into Peking Union Medical College Hospital in 7 years (1990 - 1997). The data of the 22 patients were compared with those of 17 cases in previous 67 years (1923 - 1989) in the same hospital. Twelve of 22 patients underwent (99)Tc-labeled lymphoscintigraphy.
RESULTS: Chylous ascites was diagnosed by as

A 10-year-old, male toy poodle presented for evaluation of a progressively worsening, harsh, nonproductive cough. Chylous pleural effusion, lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, normoblastemia, and recurrent subcutaneous bruising were diagnosed. Surgical exploration of the cranial mediastinum revealed extensive, redundant connective tissue which was confirmed by histopathology to be mediastinal lymphangiosarcoma (LAS). During surgical placement of a fenestrated silastic mesh for passive pleuroperitoneal drainage, chylous ascites also was diagnosed. The patient was euthanized two days postoperatively

A 63-year-old woman, who had undergone radical hysterectomy and radiation therapy for cervical cancer of the uterus three years previously, was found to have pleural effusion and ascites. A diagnosis of chylothorax and chylous ascites was made on the basis of these fluids' characteristics. She received medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) in her diet and intra-venous hyperalimentation to decrease the leakages of chyle into the pleural and peritoneal cavities, but she died of respiratory and renal failures after six months. At autopsy, metastases from the cervical cancer of the uterus to the lymph n

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chylous ascites is an exceptionally rare condition during pregnancy, typically presenting with nonspecific symptoms. To date, only a limited number of cases have been reported in the literature, and the majority of which occurred in singleton pregnancies.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 25-year-old woman with a twin pregnancy who was admitted at 32 weeks of gestation with acute abdominal pain and nausea. Due to persistent severe pain, unexplained intraperitoneal fluid, and progressing labor, an emergent cesarean section was performed. Intraoperatively,

OBJECTIVE: Chylous effusion and chylous ascites are rare but serious conditions that affect both fetuses and neonates. Previous studies have documented chylous effusions or chylous ascites treatment with medications as an adjunct to respiratory support and dietary modifications, but no formal recommendations have been made. New literature suggests propranolol as an effective and safe treatment option, though no randomized clinical studies have been published to date. This review aims to assess the efficacy and safety of propranolol in the treatment of chylous effusion and chylous ascites in fe

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chylous ascites is an uncommon form of ascites characterized by milky fluid rich in triglycerides. It is associated with poor lymphatic drainage. We report a case of chylous ascites revealing a follicular lymphoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of abdominal distension attributed to a chylous ascitis. The thoraco-abdomino-pelvic CT scan revealed voluminous intra- and retroperitoneal mass inseparable from the duodeno-pancreatic block and encompassing the mesenteric vessels, inferior vena cava and renal vessels; abundant ascite
