Genome-wide evolution of lineage-specific chromatin accessibility links regulatory changes to cichlid phenotypic diversity.

East African cichlids from Lakes Victoria, Malawi and Tanganyika have undergone explosive adaptive radiation, generating extensive morphological, ecological and behavioural diversity within a few million years. Understanding how genome-wide regulatory evolution contributes to this diversification requires comparative analyses of chromatin accessibility, transcription factor (TF) binding and gene regulatory networks across species and tissues. Here we combine high-coverage ATAC-seq with matched RNA-seq in forebrain, retina, liver and testis from five East African cichlid species spanning radiat

The influence of ghrelin agonist ipamorelin acetate on the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis in a cichlid fish, Oreochromis mossambicus.

Ghrelin, a peptide found in the brain and gut, is predicted to play a significant role in the control of various physiological systems in fish. The objective of this study was to examine the impact of ipamorelin acetate (IPA), a ghrelin agonist, on the reproductive axis of the tilapia Oreochromis mossambicus. The administration of either 5 or 30 µg of IPA for 21 days led to a significant and dose-dependent rise in food intake concomitant with a significant increase in the numbers of primary spermatocytes, secondary spermatocytes, and early spermatids compared to the control group. There was a

Post-spawning feed deprivation effects on testicular and ovarian maturation in the neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus.

Many teleost fishes can withstand long feed deprivation periods, either due to an eventual lack of food or because of their behavior during reproduction and/or parental care. In this work, the effects of total food restriction on the oogenesis, spermatogenesis, and reproductive hormones of the neotropical cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus were studied. Specifically, different pairs were isolated after having a spawning event and were feed-deprived or daily fed for 3 weeks. After that period, gonadal histology, messenger levels of genes related to reproduction (gonadotropin-releasing hormone 1, g

Genome of the Malawi golden cichlid fish (Melanochromis auratus) reveals exon loss of oca2 in an amelanistic morph.

The tropical freshwater fish family Cichlidae is famous for its record-breaking rates of speciation and diversity in colors and color patterns. Here, we sequenced the genome of the Lake Malawi cichlid Melanochromis auratus to study the genetic basis of an amelanistic morph of this species that lacks the typical melanic stripes and markings. Genome sequencing of the amelanistic and wild-type morph revealed the loss of the second exon of the known pigmentation gene oculocutaneous albinism II (oca2), also known as p(ink-eyed dilution) gene or melanocyte-specific transporter gene. Additional genot

The SSRI fluoxetine exhibits mild effects on the reproductive axis in the cichlid fish Cichlasoma dimerus (Teleostei, Cichliformes).

Among the wide variety of pharmaceuticals released into the environment, Fluoxetine (FLX), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is one of the most prescribed for the treatment of major depression. It inhibits serotonin (5-HT) reuptake at the presinaptic membrane, increasing serotonergic activity. In vertebrates, including fish, the serotonergic system is closely related to the Hypothalamic Pituitary Gonadal (HPG) axis which regulates reproduction. As FLX can act as an endocrine disrupting compound (EDC) by affecting several reproductive parameters in fish, the aim of this study was to pro

Liposarcoma or invasive lipomatosis in flower horn fish, hybrid cichlid: clinical, radiological, ultrasonographical and histopathological study.

Liposarcoma or invasive lipomatosis affecting three indoor aquarium fish (flower horn fish, hybrid cichlid) is characterized, by the presence of mature adipocytes of variable sizes and by an invasive behaviour, which affected internal organs and eyes of all cases. Detailed macroscopic, radiological, ultrasonographical and histopathological features are presented. All fish had bilateral exophthalmia with some masses around the eyes. Ultrasonography confirmed the presence of hyperechoic masses in the eyes. Histopathology of all cases described the presence of variable-sized adipose cells in the

Dominance hierarchies and social status ascent opportunity: anticipatory behavioral and physiological adjustments in a Neotropical cichlid fish.

In this work we characterized the social hierarchy of non-reproductive individuals of Cichlasoma dimerus (Heckel, 1840), independently for both sexes, and its relationship to the opportunity for social status ascent. Female and male individuals who were located on the top rank of the social hierarchy, ascended in social status when the opportunity arose, therefore indicating that dominance is directly correlated with social ascent likelihood. Dominance was positively correlated with size in males but not in females, suggesting for the latter a relationship with intrinsic features such as aggre

Capture and discard practises associated with an ornamental fishery affect the metabolic rate and aerobic capacity of three-striped dwarf cichlids Apistogramma trifasciata.

Fishing causes direct removal of individuals from wild populations but can also cause a physiological disturbance in fish that are released or discarded after capture. While sublethal physiological effects of fish capture have been well studied in commercial and recreational fisheries, this issue has been overlooked for the ornamental fish trade, where it is common to capture fish from the wild and discard non-target species. We examined metabolic responses to capture and discard procedures in the three-striped dwarf cichlid Apistogramma trifasciata, a popular Amazonian aquarium species that n

Vasopressin mediates nonapeptide and glucocorticoid signaling and social dynamics in juvenile dominance hierarchies of a highly social cichlid fish.

Early-life social experience can strongly affect adult behavior, yet the behavioral mechanisms underlying developmental trajectories are poorly understood. Here, we use the highly social cichlid, Burton's Mouthbrooder (Astatotilapia burtoni) to investigate juvenile social status and behavior, as well as the underlying neuroendocrine mechanisms. We placed juveniles in pairs or triads and found that they readily establish social status hierarchies, with some group structural variation depending on group size, as well as the relative body size of the group members. Next, we used intracerebroventr

Acquisition of Lateralized Predation Behavior Associated with Development of Mouth Asymmetry in a Lake Tanganyika Scale-Eating Cichlid Fish.

The scale-eating cichlid Perissodus microlepis with asymmetric mouth is an attractive model of behavioral laterality: each adult tears off scales from prey fishes' left or right flanks according to the direction in which its mouth is skewed. To investigate the development of behavioral laterality and mouth asymmetry, we analyzed stomach contents and lower jaw-bone asymmetry of various-sized P. microlepis (22 ≤ SL<115 mm) sampled in Lake Tanganyika. The shapes of the pored scales found in each specimen's stomach indicated its attack side preference. Early-juvenile specimens (SL<45 mm) feeding m

Pentastomid infections in cichlid fishes in the Kruger National Park and the description of the infective larva of Subtriquetra rileyi n. sp.

During 1995, studies were conducted on the pentastome fauna of the cichlid fishes Tilapia rendalli and Oreochromis mossambicus in the Kruger National Park. The prevalence of infective pentastome larvae was 40.5% in T. rendalli and 9.2% in O. mossambicus. Encapsulated nymphs of Leiperia cincinnalis were taken from the mesentery, while Sebekia wedli was either encapsulated or free-living in the swim bladder. The subtriquetrids moved about freely in the swim bladder. L. cincinnalis was present in 0.5% of T. rendalli and 0.8% of O. mossambicus and additional descriptions and measurements of the ny

Correlating relative light sensitivity to retinal visual gene expression patterns in three African cichlid fish species.

Visually guided behaviour requires adequate visual sensitivity. Hypotheses on the evolution of vertebrate visual systems largely rely on the assumption that the retinal expression pattern of visual genes is a major determinant of visual sensitivity. However, data on how visual gene expression relates to visual sensitivity and, ultimately, behaviour are equivocal. Here, we correlate relative visual sensitivity to light of different wavelengths with visual gene expression patterns, quantified at various times after the behavioural trials, for three species of African cichlids, raised in differen

A Kiss of Deep Homology: Partial Convergence in the Genomic Basis of Hypertrophied Lips in Cichlid Fish and Human Cleft Lip.

The genomic loci generating both adaptive and maladaptive variation could be surprisingly predictable in deeply homologous vertebrate structures like the lips. Variation in highly conserved vertebrate traits such as the jaws and teeth in organisms as evolutionarily disparate as teleost fishes and mammals is known to be structured by the same genes. Likewise, hypertrophied lips that have evolved repeatedly in Neotropical and African cichlid fish lineages could share unexpectedly similar genetic bases themselves and even provide surprising insight into the loci underlying human craniofacial anom

Females of an African cichlid fish display male-typical social dominance behavior and elevated androgens in the absence of males.

Social environment can affect the expression of sex-typical behavior in both males and females. Males of the African cichlid species Astatotilapia burtoni have long served as a model system to study the neural, endocrine, and molecular basis of socially plastic dominance behavior. Here we show that in all-female communities of A. burtoni, some individuals acquire a male-typical dominance phenotype, including aggressive territorial defense, distinctive color patterns, and courtship behavior. Furthermore, dominant females have higher levels of circulating androgens than either subordinate female

The introduced Asian parasitic copepod Neoergasilus japonicus (Harada) (Cyclopoida: Ergasilidae) from endangered cichlid teleosts in Mexico.

The cyclopoid copepod Neoergasilus japonicus ( Harada, 1930 ) is recorded from three endangered or threatened fish species from southeast Mexico: the tailbar cichlid Vieja hartwegi (Taylor and Miller, 1980); the Angostura cichlid V. breidohri (Werner and Stawikowski, 1987); and the sieve cichlid C. grammodes (Taylor and Miller, 1980). This ectoparasitic copepod is considered, together with most other members of Neoergasilus, an Eastern Asian form. N. japonicus is one of the most widespread parasitic Asian copepods, as it has rapidly invaded Europe and North America, including Mexico. We estima

Bone and cartilage resorption in relation to tooth development in the anterior part of the mandible in cichlid fish: a light and TEM study.

This paper presents ultrastructural features of the contact region between particular tooth germs and Meckel's cartilage prior to, during, and after initial resorption of the perichondral bone and of the cartilage in the cichlids Hemichromis bimaculatus and Astatotilapia burtoni. Imminent resorption opposite such teeth is announced by the presence, in this region, of a particular cell type, considered to be a stage in the cytodifferentiation of osteoclasts. Slightly later, an osteoclast with typical ruffled border is seen to open a fenestra in the perichondral bone which surrounds Meckel's car

Food deprivation explains effects of mouthbrooding on ovaries and steroid hormones, but not brain neuropeptide and receptor mRNAs, in an African cichlid fish.

Feeding behavior and reproduction are coordinately regulated by the brain via neurotransmitters, circulating hormones, and neuropeptides. Reduced feeding allows animals to engage in other behaviors important for fitness, including mating and parental care. Some fishes cease feeding for weeks at a time in order to provide care to their young by brooding them inside the male or female parent's mouth. Maternal mouthbrooding is known to impact circulating hormones and subsequent reproductive cycles, but neither the full effects of food deprivation nor the neural mechanisms are known. Here we ask w

Temporal dynamics of parasite community in the three-spot cichlid Amphilophus trimaculatus from Tres Palos Lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico.

The temporal dynamics of parasite communities of the Three-spot cichlid Amphilophus trimaculatus Günther 1867 was examined during an annual cycle. A total of 770 fishes were collected between March 2019 and February 2020 from a tropical costal lagoon. Thirteen taxa of metazoan parasites were identified, two of monoxenous and 11 of heteroxenous parasites. No significant changes were observed in the species composition of parasite communities in A. trimaculatus during a 12-yr period (2008-2020).
