Attitudes, Roles, and Competencies of Clinical Psychologists Regarding Euthanasia Due to Unbearable Mental Suffering.

Since the enactment of Belgium's euthanasia law in 2002, clinical psychologists have played an increasingly significant role in the multidisciplinary approach to euthanasia, particularly regarding cases involving unbearable mental suffering (UMS euthanasia). This cross-sectional study examined the attitudes, roles, and competencies of clinical psychologists in Flanders concerning UMS euthanasia using an online questionnaire (n = 242). The survey explored attitudes towards UMS euthanasia, as well as self-perceived competencies and involvement. Results indicate that most psychologists hold a gen

Competing Risks in Clinical Trials: Do They Matter and How Should We Account for Them?

During patient follow-up in a randomized trial, some deaths may occur. Where death (or noncardiovascular death) is not part of an outcome of interest it is termed a competing risk. Conventional analyses (eg, Cox proportional hazards model) handle death similarly to other censored follow-up. Patients still alive are unrealistically assumed to be representative of those who died. The Fine and Gray model has been used to handle competing risks, but is often used inappropriately and can be misleading. We propose an alternative multiple imputation approach that plausibly accounts for the fact that

An augmented illness-death model for semi-competing risks with clinically immediate terminal events.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-associated condition posing risks of both fetal and maternal mortality and morbidity that can only resolve following delivery and removal of the placenta. Because in its typical form preeclampsia can arise before delivery, but not after, these two events exemplify the time-to-event setting of "semi-competing risks" in which a non-terminal event of interest is subject to the occurrence of a terminal event of interest. The semi-competing risks framework presents a valuable opportunity to simultaneously address two clinically meaningful risk modeling tasks: (i) charact

Enhancing competency in infection prevention and control: Identifying priorities for clinical nurse educational needs.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) have become a significant concern globally, posing risks to patients and imposing social and economic burdens. Competency in infection prevention and control (IPC) practices is essential for nurses to effectively reduce the risk of transmission. However, there is a lack of research on educational needs for competency in IPC practices. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess and prioritize educational needs for the development of educational content focused on the IPC practices of clinical nurses. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional design

Ignored Components of Sexuality: The Need for Competent Clinical Practice with Child Survivors of Sexual Abuse.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a complex and often traumatic experience that can impact youth's emotional and psychological well-being. Many clinicians do not feel adequately prepared to work with youth around topics of sexuality. In this qualitative study, we examine how licensed therapists treat youth between ages 5 and 16 who have experienced CSA. We asked participants how they incorporate sexuality into trauma work with this population. Although all participants discussed themes commonly reported in clinical work with survivors (i.e., working on trust, self-image challenges, the brain-body co

Factors associated with spiritual care competencies in Taiwan's clinical nurses: A descriptive correlational study.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To determine factors associated with nurses' spiritual care competencies. BACKGROUND: Holistic nursing care includes biopsychosocial and spiritual care. However, nurses are limited by a lack of knowledge, time constraints and apprehension of assessing spiritual issues, which leaves them unable to assess and meet patients' spiritual needs. Thus, when patients experience spiritual distress, clinical nurses lose the opportunity to support spiritual growth and self-actualisation. In Taiwan, spiritual care, religion and culture are unique compared to those in other countries.

The gender affirmative lifespan approach (GALA): A framework for competent clinical care with nonbinary clients.

Background: The limited research on nonbinary individuals suggests that this community experiences significant health disparities. Compared to binary transgender individuals, research suggests that nonbinary individuals are at elevated risk for discrimination and negative mental health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, traumatic stress, and suicidality. Even mental health providers who work with binary transgender individuals often lack knowledge of and training to work competently with nonbinary individuals. Methods: The authors of this conceptual article present the Gender Affirmative

Developing clinical competencies/training checklists: when you have to start from scratch!

Where does an educator begin to develop competencies if the organization has not had formal written standards, has few clinical policies and procedures, or has not had consistent training checklists? The educator may have to begin from scratch. During a year-long process, 50+ clinical sites and 500+ clinical staff (nurses and medical assistants) played an active role in improving clinical orientation by assisting with the development of clinical competencies/ training checklists. This article outlines the development of the clinical competencies/ training checklists for the University of Wisco

Death Literacy and Death Competence in Undergraduate Clinical and Allied Health Education: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: End-of-life care is a critical competency for the health care workforce, yet evidence suggests that many health care professionals feel unprepared to engage with death, dying, and bereavement. Death literacy and death competence are emerging frameworks for assessing readiness to provide high-quality, compassionate care. Although validated tools exist, little is known about the preparedness of final-year undergraduate health care students in Australia. Understanding their current levels of death literacy and death competence is essential for informing curriculum design and strengthe

Clinical Competence and Perception of Medical Students after Early Clinical Exposure through Pre-clerckship Education at an Ethiopian Medical School: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Conventional medical curriculum is the mainstay in the long history of modern medical education. Innovative integrated medical curriculum attracted significant attention in improving conventional curriculum. In the integrated curriculum, basic sciences are incorporated horizontally with each other, and students are exposed early to clinical settings. This is expected to improve students' knowledge and skills in clinical medicine by the time they start their clerkship rotation. METHOD: the study aims to make a baseline assessment on the overall knowledge and skills of medical stude
