Identifying fibromyalgia subgroups using cluster analysis: Relationships with clinical variables.

BACKGROUND: Patients with fibromyalgia (FM) exhibit significant clinical heterogeneity, in terms of physical, social and psychological functions, as well as therapeutic responses. Here, we examined FM patients in terms of pain, physical, social and psychological variables to identify clinical subgroups that may be predictive of treatment patterns. METHODS: A total of 313 FM patients were interviewed using a structured questionnaire that included sociodemographic data, current or past FM symptoms and current use of relevant medications. A K-means cluster analysis was conducted using variables

Cluster analysis of Scedosporium boydii infections in a single hospital.

Scedosporiosis is a rare, but often fatal mycotic infection occurring in immunosuppressed as well as in immunocompetent patients. Over a period of 14 months, Scedosporium boydii isolates were sent to our reference laboratory from six immunocompetent patients treated at a single hospital in Germany. In analogy to the EORTC/MSG criteria, four patients were classified as proven invasive scedosporiosis cases, and two patients as probable or possible cases. Of note, in five patients scedosporiosis was diagnosed between 1 and 14 months (median 5.0 months) after cardiac surgery. Despite antimycotic t

Identifying heterogeneity among injection drug users: a cluster analysis approach.

OBJECTIVES: We used cluster analysis to subdivide a population of injection drug users and identify previously unknown behavioral heterogeneity within that population. METHODS: We applied cluster analysis techniques to data collected in a cross-sectional survey of injection drug users in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The clustering variables we used were based on receptive syringe sharing, ethnicity, and types of drugs injected. RESULTS: Seven clusters were identified for both male and female injection drug users. Some relationships previously revealed in our study setting, such as the known relations

Cluster analysis of genetic and epidemiological data in molecular epidemiology.

Current molecular epidemiological studies of complex diseases include a large number of genetic and epidemiological variables. Clustering approaches are a useful tool to detect patterns in data sets and generate hypothesis regarding potential relationships in complex data situations. In this article similarity coefficients are presented for a hierarchical cluster analysis of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and epidemiological data to gain insight into the relationship of variables and detect potential differences between diseased and control individuals in case-control studies. Cluster analysis of HIV intervention outcomes among substance-abusing women.

The study described here presents an innovative approach to analyzing intervention outcomes among women substance abusers participating in a national HIV prevention research study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. We used cluster analysis to divide the women in our sample (N=557) into four distinct subgroups predominantly characterized by differences in drug use, injecting risk, sexual behaviors, and drug and sexual risk combined. The four subgroups resulting from this process were primary crack-using women, primary needle-using women, high-frequency needle-using women, and women

Spatial partitioning using multivariate cluster analysis and a contiguity algorithm.

Spatial analysis of epidemiological data can be a useful tool for identifying patterns of disease occurrence and can provide substantial support for prevention and control strategies. To obtain the greatest spatial resolution, it is important to use the smallest available areal units with homogeneous population. However, small areas usually have a small population, introducing spurious variability in the chosen indicators of disease occurrence. This paper describes an approach for combining small geographical units to stabilize mortality rates by pooling information across areas according to s

Analysis of the duplicated human C4/P450c21/X gene cluster.

Gene duplications, deletions and rearrangements occur with an unusually high frequency in the region of the P450c21 genes encoding 21-hydroxylase. In the human genome, the locus contains at least 6 genes, oriented 5' C4A, P450c21A, XA, C4B, P450c21B, XB 3'. Sequence analysis of the XA gene, of the 5' flanking DNA of the C4A gene, and of part of the XB gene revealed that this gene cluster was duplicated by nonhomologous recombination at a CAAG tetranucleotide. The location of this duplication suggests that it may have occurred after mammalian speciation. The XA gene is abundantly expressed in t

Sarcoidosis relapse risk factors: a single-centre retrospective cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disease with an unpredictable course. While corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment, recurrence is common and influenced by clinical, demographic and therapeutic factors. However, an integrated approach to patient stratification remains underdeveloped. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the key clinical, demographic and therapeutic factors influencing sarcoidosis recurrence, and how can an integrated risk stratification model improve disease management? METHODS: We conducted a clustering analysis on 160 sarcoidosis patients to identify recur

Cluster headache suicidality: a systematic review with a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is considered as common in patients with cluster headache (CH) and is defined as 'suicidal headache'. However, the exact level of suicidality is not known and is intuitively assumed to be correlated with the CH severity. METHODS: This work is a systematic review of data accessible through PubMed and published up to July 25, focusing on the suicidality of CH according to the rates of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. This meta-analysis was carried out with all selected studies then by considering studies with specialized recruitment and studies with non-specialized re

Identifying New Subtypes of Multiple System Atrophy Using Cluster Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a disease with diverse symptoms and the commonly used classifications, MSA-P and MSA-C, do not cover all the different symptoms seen in MSA patients. Additionally, these classifications do not provide information about how the disease progresses over time or the expected outcome for patients. OBJECTIVE: To explore clinical subtypes of MSA with a natural disease course through a data-driven approach to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of MSA. METHODS: We followed 122 cases of MSA collected from 3 hospitals for 3 years. Demographic characterist

Genetic and Transcriptional Analysis of 8q24.21 Cluster in Gastric Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Previous studies from our research group have shown that trisomy 8 and the amplification of the 8q24.21 region is very frequent in gastric cancer (GC). Little is known about the role of most genes located in this region. Thus, the aim of this study was to understand the possible impact of transcriptional alterations and copy number variation (CNV) of four genes located in the 8q24.21 region - FAM49B, FAM84B, GSDMC and miR-5194 - in GC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-one to 85 matched pairs of tumoral and adjacent non-tumoral gastric tissues, from patients with primary GC, were u
