New or little-known jewel beetles on mistletoe, Taxillus Tiegh. (Loranthaceae), in Japan: Unusual morphology and biology in Habroloma Thomson, 1864 (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).

Habroloma (Parahabroloma) tsutsumiuchiisp. nov., a new jewel beetle species associated with mistletoe, Taxillus yadoriki (Siebold ex Maxim.) Danser (Loranthaceae), is described from Honshu and Kyushu in Japan. Additionally, information on the morphology of H. (P.) taxillusi Kato & Kawakita, 2023, associated with T. yadoriki, is revised based on more than 50 specimens; a first description of the genitalia, new distributional records within Japan, and notes on mistakes in the labeling of the type specimens and in the clypeus description are given. Information on the biology of the two mistletoe-

Effects of habitat fragmentation on provisioning rates, diet and breeding success in two species of tit (great tit and blue tit).

The aim of this study was to examine the effects of forest fragmentation on the ability of parent birds to provide their young with an adequate food supply. To examine whether prey population densities of the great tit (Parus major L.) and the blue tit (P. caeruleus L.) vary between study areas in different forest size classes we compared provisioning rates and chick diet and related these parameters to breeding success. We filmed 217 nests over two breeding seasons and collected data on frass fall as a general estimate of caterpillar availability. Nests which were attended by none or one pare

Developmental, regenerative, and behavioral dynamics in acoel reproduction.

Acoel worms are an enigmatic and understudied animal lineage. Sparse descriptions suggest a diversity of reproductive anatomies across acoels, and likely a corresponding behavioral diversity. Here, we study the reproductive life history of the acoel Hofstenia miamia, an emerging lab-tractable model system. We describe H. miamia's reproductive organs, identifying structures previously unknown in acoels. Following worms from zygotes to adulthood, we find that their reproductive organs emerge in a stereotyped sequence as a function of increasing body size. These organs regenerate in a similar seq

CRISPR-Mediated Gene Editing: Generating Gene Knockouts or Precision Base Changes in F0 Xenopus.

CRISPR-mediated gene editing has transformed Xenopus research by enabling targeted, heritable gene disruption in both Xenopus laevis and Xenopus tropicalis. The CRISPR/Cas9 system has allowed efficient loss-of-function analysis within days of injection, overcoming the limitations of transient morpholino knockdowns. Recent advances in CRISPR-mediated base editing technology further expands this toolkit, permitting the precision generation of single-base changes in Xenopus. High editing efficiency, external development, and large clutch size make Xenopus embryos exceptionally suited for genome m

Tetraspanin Cd9b plays a role in fertility in zebrafish.

In mice, CD9 expression on the egg is required for efficient sperm-egg fusion and no effects on ovulation or male fertility are observed in CD9 null animals. Here we show that cd9b knockout zebrafish also appear to have fertility defects. In contrast to mice, fewer eggs were laid by cd9b knockout zebrafish pairs and, of the eggs laid, a lower percentage were fertilised. These effects could not be linked to primordial germ cell numbers or migration as these were not altered in the cd9b mutants. The decrease in egg numbers could be rescued by exchanging either cd9b knockout partner, male or fema

Reproductive success of barn swallows nesting near a selenium-contaminated lake in east Texas, USA.

Reproductive success and contaminant levels in 1986 and 1987 were compared between Barn Swallows nesting at selenium-contaminated Martin Lake, Texas, USA, and swallows nesting at a reference site. Nests were initiated about the same time or earlier at Martin Lake than at the reference site and clutch size was similar between the two locations. Nest success was significantly higher at Martin Lake than at the reference site and no embryo or chick deformities were documented. Selenium concentrations in 14 of 20 eggs from Martin Lake were above background (> 3 ppm, dry weight); two of 20 eggs cont

Blood Parasite Infections and Reproductive Performance in a Multi-Host Avian System.

Blood parasites are widespread pathogens of wild birds, yet their reproductive consequences remain poorly understood. We investigated associations between blood parasite infections and reproductive performance in three passerine species breeding sympatrically on Gotland, Sweden: the resident great tit (Parus major) and blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) and the migratory collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis). The study was based on data from 181 nests and 1201 nestling observations. Adult birds were screened for Plasmodium, Haemoproteus, and Trypanosoma infections using next-generation sequenc

Identification and characterization of proteins synthesized de novo and secreted by the reproductive tract of the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis.

The objectives of this study were to identify, characterize and examine differences in proteins synthesized de novo and secreted by different regions of the reproductive tract of the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis, during three reproductive (vitellogenic, gravid, post-clutch) and one non-reproductive state. After capture, alligators from lakes in north central Florida were anaesthetized, the reproductive tract excised aseptically, the size of any follicle determined, and different functional regions of the tract dissected out and partitioned for explant culture. Analysis of the

Breeding pairs with color aberrations in oriental reed warblers.

In 2017, one pair of Oriental reed warblers (Acrocephalus orientalis) with color aberrations was found in Yongnianwa National Wetland Park, Hebei, China. The female bird exhibited white feathers on the head, neck, and upper back, and the base of the beak was flesh-red in color. The male had a few feathers on the outer edges of the left and right primary wing coverts that were white, which was determined to be leucism after analysis. The breeding pairs laid their first egg on May 29, with a clutch size of four eggs. After an incubation period of 13 days, two chicks hatched on June 13, 2017. The

Anti-parasite treatment results in decreased estimated survival with increasing lead (Pb) levels in the common eider Somateria mollissima.

Field experiments where parasites are removed through treatment and contaminant levels in host tissues are recorded can provide insight into the combined effects of parasitism and contaminants in wild populations. In 2013 and 2014, we treated northern common eider ducks (Somateria mollissima) arriving at a breeding colony with either a broad-spectrum antihelminthic (PANACUR®) or distilled water, and measured their blood lead (Pb) levels. Breeding propensity and clutch sizes were inversely related to Pb in both treatment groups. In comparison, a negative effect of Pb on resight probability the

Making the in vitro breeding of Schistocephalus solidus more flexible.

Schistocephalus solidus is one of the few cestodes that can be bred in vitro. Worms have typically been bred in pairs, so the parents of each offspring can clearly be assigned. From a genetic perspective, it would be useful to be able to mate an individual worm to multiple partners while still being able to distinguish among different parents. As each adult S. solidus possesses numerous reproductive complexes, cutting worms and breeding the pieces separately would facilitate such breeding designs. We halved worms before in vitro breeding and evaluated whether this affected outcrossing rates an

Sensory pollutants alter bird phenology and fitness across a continent.

Expansion of anthropogenic noise and night lighting across our planet1,2 is of increasing conservation concern3-6. Despite growing knowledge of physiological and behavioural responses to these stimuli from single-species and local-scale studies, whether these pollutants affect fitness is less clear, as is how and why species vary in their sensitivity to these anthropic stressors. Here we leverage a large citizen science dataset paired with high-resolution noise and light data from across the contiguous United States to assess how these stimuli affect reproductive success in 142 bird species. Cerebellar Hypoplasia in Two Juvenile African Grey Parrots (Psittacus erithacus).

Two sibling 12-week-old DNA-sexed female African grey parrots (Psittacus erithacus) were presented for progressive whole-body tremors, proprioceptive deficits, and an inability to stand unassisted. A third bird in the clutch (DNA-sexed as a male) exhibited no clinical signs. Physical examination of the affected birds revealed ataxia, inability to stand without assistance, and a reliance on their beaks to assist with their mobility. Hematologic and biochemical analyses were normal, as were radiographic images of both birds. Cerebellar disease of unknown origin was diagnosed, and the birds were

Embryotoxicity of maternally transferred methylmercury to fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

Mercury (Hg) is a ubiquitous environmental contaminant and potent neurotoxin. In aquatic environments, Hg can be transformed into methylmercury (MeHg), which bioaccumulates in aquatic food webs, including fish. Methylmercury has been shown to transfer from female fish to developing eggs; however, relatively little is known regarding the effects of maternally transferred MeHg on fish embryos. The present study evaluated the effects of maternally transferred MeHg on fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) embryos. Embryos were collected from adult fatheads exposed for 30 d to 1 of 3 diets spiked wi

Xenopus embryos to study fetal alcohol syndrome, a model for environmental teratogenesis.

Vertebrate model systems are central to characterize the outcomes of ethanol exposure and the etiology of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), taking advantage of their genetic and morphological closeness and similarity to humans. We discuss the contribution of amphibian embryos to FASD research, focusing on Xenopus embryos. The Xenopus experimental system is characterized by external development and accessibility throughout embryogenesis, large clutch sizes, gene and protein activity manipulation, transgenesis and genome editing, convenient chemical treatment, explants and conjugates, and

Fitness in novel environments: Bisphenol S and warming reduce energy efficiency, reproductive success, and movement across generations in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Natural environments today differ from those in the recent past because of altered abiotic conditions and the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds that modify responses to those conditions. We aimed to quantify the interactive effects of temperature and an emerging endocrine disrupting compound (bisphenol S [BPS]) on physiology and reproduction within and across generations of zebrafish (Danio rerio). We conducted a fully factorial experiment with temperature (24 and 30 °C) and BPS (control and 10μ g l-1) as factors. In the directly exposed parental F0 generation increased temperature an

Effect of heat exposure on gene expression of feed intake regulatory peptides in laying hens.

The aim of this paper was to investigate the effect of heat stress on the regulation of appetite-associated genes in laying hens. Forty eight laying hens were randomly divided into two circumstances: high (31 ± 1.5°C; relative humidity, 82.0 ± 2.2%) or normal (20 ± 2°C, control; relative humidity, 60.1 ± 4.5%) ambient environment. Heat stress decreased body weight gain (P < 0.01), feed intake (P < 0.01), laying rate (P < 0.05), average egg mass (P < 0.01), egg production (P < 0.01), shell thickness (P < 0.01), and feed efficiency (P < 0.05). High ambient temperature decreased plasma uric acid

Altered neonatal development and endocrine function in Alligator mississippiensis associated with a contaminated environment.

Reduced reproductive success, altered reproductive tract development, and differences in circulating hormones have been documented in American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) from Lake Apopka, FL, compared to less contaminated sites, such as the Lake Woodruff National Wildlife Refuge, FL. Comparative studies among alligators of varying size and age suggest that in ovo contaminant-induced alterations of endocrine function are further modified during postembryonic development and/or through environmental exposure. In the present study, we examined developmental and endocrine-related indi
