Alcian blue dye normally binds to polyanionic, polymeric substances. Such structures are often associated with calcium binding portions of the organic matrix in calcifying tissues. The organic matrix of spicules prepared from the gorgonian Pseudoplexaura flagellosa (Houttuyn) is alcianophilic. The dye is very tightly bound to the lipoid portion of the insoluble spicule matrix. No acidic substances (sulfated or acidic polysaccharides or phospholipids) were demonstrable in this material, suggesting an unusual but unknown interaction between dye and substrate. On a microscopical basis, inclusion

Why has histo-incompatibility arisen in evolution and can cause self-intolerance? Compatible/incompatible reactions following natural contacts between genetically-different (allogeneic) colonies of marine organisms have inspired the conception that self-nonself discrimination has developed to reduce invasion threats by migratory foreign germ/somatic stem cells, in extreme cases resulting in conquest of the whole body by a foreign genome. Two prominent model species for allogeneic discrimination are the marine invertebrates Hydractinia (Cnidaria) and Botryllus (Ascidiacea). In Hydractinia, self

Regenerative capacity varies widely across animals, yet aging is often accompanied by declining tissue homeostasis and regenerative potential. In many species, regeneration of complex structures relies on epimorphic programs that form a blastema, coordinating cell proliferation and pattern reorganization after injury. Although aging-associated regeneration defects have been documented in several bilaterian models, how aging shapes regeneration in early-branching metazoans with robust regenerative abilities remains unclear. Here, we investigate aging and regeneration in the medusa stage of Clad

Despite their impact on the healing of soft connective tissue, fibrin sealants have not been shown conclusively to have an important role in the healing of bone defects. We report the positive influence of fibrin sealants on repair of cancellous bone cavities filled with a porous, resorbable ceramic. We studied two fibrin sealants: Autocolle and Tissucol. Autocolle is enriched in platelet factors during its preparation. Tissucol is a commercially available fibrin glue prepared from pooled human plasma that has no enrichment in platelet factors. Cavities 10 mm in depth and 5 mm in diameter were

Can limb regeneration be induced? Few have pursued this question, and an evolutionarily conserved strategy has yet to emerge. This study reports a strategy for inducing regenerative response in appendages, which works across three species that span the animal phylogeny. In Cnidaria, the frequency of appendage regeneration in the moon jellyfish Aurelia was increased by feeding with the amino acid L-leucine and the growth hormone insulin. In insects, the same strategy induced tibia regeneration in adult Drosophila. Finally, in mammals, L-leucine and sucrose administration induced digit regenerat

Cnidaria is a phylum of aquatic invertebrates that includes jellyfish, sea anemones and corals. Their venoms are among the oldest in the animal kingdom and an important source of bioactive molecules. Advances in omics technologies have revolutionized toxin discovery, yet knowledge of cnidarian toxin diversity remains fragmented across databases and individual studies. To address this gap, this review integrates information from 342 toxins curated in the ToxProt database, 76 additional toxins reported in the literature, and evidence from 81 proteomic and 31 transcriptomic studies. Toxins have b

The current paper considers the effects of a water-soluble polymer (polyethylene glycol (PEG)) on the bioluminescent reaction of the photoprotein obelin from the marine coelenterate Obelia longissima and the product of this bioluminescent reaction: a coelenteramide-containing fluorescent protein (CCFP). We varied PEG concentrations (0-1.44 mg/mL) and molecular weights (1000, 8000, and 35,000 a.u.). The presence of PEG significantly increased the bioluminescent intensity of obelin but decreased the photoluminescence intensity of CCFP; the effects did not depend on the PEG concentration or the m

Genes for the family of green-fluorescent proteins (GFPs) have been found in more than 100 species of animals, with some species containing six or more copies producing a variety of colours. Thus far, however, these species have all been within three phyla: Cnidaria, Arthropoda and Chordata. We have discovered GFP-type fluorescent proteins in the phylum Ctenophora, the comb jellies. The ctenophore proteins share the xYG chromophore motif of all other characterized GFP-type proteins. These proteins exhibit the uncommon property of reversible photoactivation, in which fluorescent emission become

Jellyfish are aquatic animals of the phylum Cnidaria found in seas all over the world. They are characterized by the presence of cnidocytes, cells that contain a secretory organelle, the cnidocyst, mainly used for predation and defense purposes. An adult female patient presented to our Unit of Dermatology, for a 10 days-old history of macular-erythematous lesions in her right upper limb, due to a sting by a mauve stinger Pelagia noctiluca. Dermoscopy showed a general pinkish background surmounted by numerous brown dots and lines, distributed along the surface of the skin. Reflectance confocal

Fouling communities on artificial marine structures are generally different from benthic communities in natural rocky habitats. However, they may also differ among different types of artificial structures. Two artificial structures in direct contact with arriving vessels were compared: floating pontoons within recreational marinas, and sea-walls within commercial harbours. Natural rocky habitats were used as a reference, and the genus Eudendrium (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) was chosen as a bioindicator. The assemblages were different among the three types of habitat studied, with different species cha

Although fossil evidence suggests that various animal groups were able to move actively through their environment in the early stages of their evolution, virtually no direct information is available on the nature of their muscle systems. The origin of jellyfish swimming, for example, is of great interest to biologists. Exceptionally preserved muscles are described here in benthic peridermal olivooid medusozoans from the basal Cambrian of China (Kuanchuanpu Formation, ca. 535 Ma) that have direct equivalent in modern medusozoans. They consist of circular fibers distributed over the bell surface

It is widely held that the bilaterian tubular gut with mouth and anus evolved from a simple gut with one major gastric opening. However, there is no consensus on how this happened. Did the single gastric opening evolve into a mouth, with the anus forming elsewhere in the body (protostomy), or did it evolve into an anus, with the mouth forming elsewhere (deuterostomy), or did it evolve into both mouth and anus (amphistomy)? These questions are addressed by the comparison of developmental fates of the blastopore, the opening of the embryonic gut, in diverse animals that live today. Here we revie

The phyllosoma, a larva of spiny and slipper lobsters, has an exceptionally flat body and long appendages. It is known to associate with several species of cnidarian jellyfish, a behavior that is not rare in crustaceans. Indeed, phyllosomas clinging onto jellyfish have been observed both in the laboratory and in the natural environment. Wild phyllosomas have been found to contain jellyfish tissues in their hepatopancreas and feces, suggesting that the larvae utilize jellyfish as a food source; however, how they capture jellyfish and what species of jellyfish they prefer have rarely been invest

The gorgonian coral Leptogorgia virgulata contains thyroxine, or a thyroxine-like substance, referred to here as G-T(4). The G-T(4) levels were significantly higher in colonies collected in the summer vs. winter months. Using immunocytochemical techniques, G-T(4) was localized in the axis, polyp epithelium, and within the electron dense bodies of scleroblasts (spicule-forming cells), as well as on the periphery of spicules. G-T(4) was also localized in the mesoglea between closely adjacent scleroblasts. The effects of exogenous T(4) on the uptake of Ca(45) was determined in spicule, tissue and

The seawater bacterium Vibrio alginolyticus was detected in 5 of 20 water samples from seawater aquaria (from 3 of 5 units) and also from the surface of diseased stony corals. A total of 45 isolates were differentiated biochemically, of which 13 isolates (29%) proved to be V. alginolyticus. All those strains produced the virulence factors caseinase and lipase, 11 strains amylase and gelatinase. 7 strains showed lecithinase activity and 2 strains produced hemolysins. All examined strains showed a marked toxicity to vero cells proven by the MTT-bioassay, but no toxicity to plant cells with the s

Examining early-branching animal phyla can help reconstruct the evolutionary origins of immune cells. Here, we characterize immune-related cell programs in embryos of the sea anemone Nematostella vectensis, a model of Cnidaria, which diverged ~600 million years ago from other animals. Using a transgenic Nematostella reporter line expressing mCherry under the RLRb antiviral promoter, we identify a morphologically and transcriptomically distinct cell population activated by the viral mimic poly(I:C). These cells upregulate immune effector and regulator genes and show increased phagocytic activit

Marine invertebrates are one of the major groups of organisms, which could be diversified under the major taxonomic groups of Porifera, Cnidaria, Mollusca, Arthropoda, Echinodermata, and many other minor phyla. To date, range of medicinal benefits and a significant number of marine natural products (MNPs) have been discovered from marine invertebrates. Seafood diet from edible marine invertebrates such as mollusks and crustaceans has been linked with various medicinal benefits to improve human health. Among marine invertebrates, spongers from phylum Porifera is the most dominant group responsi
