Experimental transmission of Cryptosporidium molnari (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) to gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.).

Cryptosporidium molnari was experimentally transmitted to gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) and European sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax) by oral infection with infected stomach scrapings. The infection was also cross-transmitted from infected gilthead sea bream to sea bass by cohabitation. The course of the infection was assessed after necropsy by three microscopic diagnostic methods and their sensitivity was compared. At the end of all the experiments the prevalence of infection reached 100%. In the oral experiments, both fish hosts appeared infected as early as 7 days post exposure (p.e.), b

Dietary supplementary with soya saponins alleviates the poor intestinal health of broilers challenged with coccidia via reshaping the structure of the intestinal microbiota.

Soya saponins (SS) have the ability to improve the intestinal microbiota and enhance intestinal immune function. While, there are few reports on their application in broiler production. The present study was designed to investigate effects of dietary supplementary with SS on the intestinal health of birds challenged with coccidia (CC). 180 male and healthy Cobb 500 broiler chickens with unifrom body weight were randomly divided into 3 treatment groups, those groups were named as the control group (CTR), the coccidia challenged group (CC), and the SS treated group challenged with CC (SS+CC). Differences in the faecal microbiome of non-diarrhoeic clinically healthy dogs and cats associated with Giardia duodenalis infection: impact of hookworms and coccidia.

The protozoan parasite Giardia duodenalis causes a waterborne diarrhoeal disease in animals and humans, yet many Giardia-infected hosts remain asymptomatic. Mixed parasite infections are common in both animals and humans with unknown consequences for Giardia or other parasites. We compared the composition and diversity of bacterial communities from 40 dogs, including free-roaming dogs, and 21 surrendered cats from Australia. The dog cohort included 17 (42.5%) dogs positive for Giardia and 13 (32.5%) dogs positive for dog hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum). The cat samples included eight positive f

[The effect of coccidia of the genus Sarcocystis on the morphofunctional organization of the skeletal musculature in experimentally infected mice. II. The connective tissue elements of the endomysium].

As an extension of the previous communication (Radchenko, et al., 1996), a study was made of the response of connective tissue elements, surrounding the Sarcocystis muris infected muscle fibers. As earlier, the S. muris sarcocysts were examined in mice 1, 2.5, 6, and 10 months after sporocyst feeding. Within the first 2.5 months after infection, marked accumulations of lymphocyte-like cells and collagen fibres are observed in the endomysium, and simultaneously the activity of capillary endothelial cells is seen to enhance due to the appearance of much more micropinocytotic vesicles, compared t

Altered gene expression of selected matrix metalloproteinase system proteins in the broiler chicken gastrointestinal tract during post-hatch development and coccidia infection.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of proteases, that can process extracellular matrix (ECM) components and non-ECM molecules. MMPs can also function intracellularly in proteolytic and nonproteolytic functions. The participation of MMPs in the remodeling of the chicken gastrointestinal tract is largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to examine 1) the early neonatal developmental changes and effect of delayed access to feed immediately post-hatch (PH) and 2) the effect of Eimeria infection on mRNA expression of selected MMPs, their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs), and a disinteg

Ultrastructural aspects of hepatic coccidiosis caused by Goussia lusca n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Coccidia) infecting Trisopterus luscus (Gadidae) from the NE Atlantic Ocean.

Goussia lusca n. sp. is described from the liver of pouting Trisopterus luscus from the NE Atlantic Ocean in Ibero-Atlantic Portuguese and Spanish waters. Mature oocysts were 31.7 (28.8 to 35.4) microm in diameter. Each oocyst contained 4 ellipsoidal sporocysts arranged in an aleatory position, and measuring approximately 13.7 x 9.2 microm. Each sporocyst contained 2 sporozoites. Ultrastructurally, the sporocyst wall consisted of a dense inner layer 115 nm thick, transversely striated, regularly intercalated by thin grooves with electron-lucent spaces, and separated from the outer layer by a t

[Morphofunctional changes in hepatocytes during the early postnatal development of rats experimentally infected with the intestinal protozoan pathogen, Cryptosporidium parvum (Coccidia, Sporozoa)].

Morphofunctional changes in hepatocytes of 10-14-day old rats were followed in norm and after experimental infection with different doses of oocysts of Cryptosporidium parvum. The liver index (ratio between the liver and body masses) varied with the intensity of invasion on the background of slowing down up to the total cessation of animal growth rates, and all this obviously pointed to severe pathology. In the infected rats, some cytological indices were shifted compared to the norm: protein amount and the average number of genomes per hepatocyte were seen to increase, the normal ratio betwee

Effect of feeding a blackseed meal-sericea lespedeza leaf meal pellet on gastrointestinal nematode and coccidia infection and animal performance in young goats.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infection poses the most significant obstacle to the sustainable development of small ruminant (sheep and goat) farming globally. Resistance of GINs to synthetic anthelmintic drugs has led to rising interest in exploring alternative methods for parasite control, such as the utilization of bioactive plants with anti-parasitic properties. In this investigation, black seed (Nigella sativa), a shrub high in secondary antioxidant compounds, and sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata), a perennial legume high in tannins with anti-parasitic properties were combined to de

Use of monoclonal antibodies developed against chicken coccidia (Eimeria) to study invasion and development of Eimeria reichenowi in Florida sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis).

Eimeria gruis and Eimeria reichenowi are common coccidial parasites of a number of species of cranes. Until recently, little was known about either the site for invasion or the dynamics of early development of the crane coccidia because of the difficulty of identifying sporozoites and early developmental stages of these parasites by conventional staining methods. In the present study, monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) elicited against Eimeria spp. of chickens and turkeys were found to cross-react with sporozoites and developmental stages of E. reichenowi in the tissues of Florida sandhill cranes (G

The utility of diversity profiling using Illumina 18S rRNA gene amplicon deep sequencing to detect and discriminate Toxoplasma gondii among the cyst-forming coccidia.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) has the capacity to screen a single DNA sample and detect pathogen DNA from thousands of host DNA sequence reads, making it a versatile and informative tool for investigation of pathogens in diseased animals. The technique is effective and labor saving in the initial identification of pathogens, and will complement conventional diagnostic tests to associate the candidate pathogen with a disease process. In this report, we investigated the utility of the diversity profiling NGS approach using Illumina small subunit ribosomal RNA (18S rRNA) gene amplicon deep seq
