Auditory nerve activity and cochlear morphology after noise exposure.

Four chinchillas were exposed for 5 days to an octave band of noise centered at 4 kHz and having an SPL of 86 dB. After a recovery period of approximately 6 months, behavioral audiograms were obtained and auditory nerve fiber activity was recorded. The animals were killed and the cochleas embedded in plastic to obtain a surface preparation and 1 mu radial sections of the organ of Corti. Behavioral threshold shifts ranged from 5 to 20 dB at frequencies between 4 and 11 kHz. Auditory nerve fiber thresholds were elevated up to 70 dB for units with characteristic frequencies between 4 and 14 kHz.

Long-term degeneration in the cochlear nerve and cochlear nucleus of the adult chinchilla following acoustic overstimulation.

Adult chinchillas were exposed once to an octave-band noise, centered at 4 kHz, and allowed to survive for 16 days or for 1, 2, 4, and 8 months. Axonal degeneration was mapped in the cochlear nucleus, using the Nauta-Rasmussen silver method, and related to hair cell damage and to loss of myelinated nerve fibers in the osseous spiral lamina of the cochlea. Axonal degeneration in the dorsal cochlear nucleus had already reached a peak by 16 days and disappeared after 1 month. Meanwhile, myelinated nerve fiber degeneration in the cochlea extended basally, followed 2 weeks to 2 months later by spre

[Issues of auditory implant in children with cochlear nerve deficiency].

Cochlear nerve deficiency(CND) is a rare inner ear malformation characterized by a hypoplastic or absent cochlear nerve, resulting in variable hearing loss or total deafness, depending on the quantity of nerve fibers present. About 18% of congenital hearing loss are associated with CND. It is a disease of uncertain cause. The outcome of auditory implant in CND patients varies widely. This article will discuss the related issues of CND.

Audiological findings from an adult with thin cochlear nerves.

Reported here are audiological findings from an adult with thin cochlear nerves. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that he had a thinner cochlear nerve in the left ear than in the right ear. He had a higher degree of hearing loss in the left ear and poor speech recognition scores for both ears. He had normal middle ear and cochlear functioning. The auditory brainstem response and acoustic reflexes were absent, indicating a retrocochlear pathology. Long latency responses (LLR) revealed normal cortical functioning. Hence, implantation of an auditory brainstem implant might be an option,

Radiation tolerance of the cochlear nerve at the gamma-knife in rabbits.

Since the first treatment of acoustic neurinoma using the gamma-knife by Leksell, a series of cases have been reported with good control rates. However, the most frequent complication is delayed hearing loss which occurs in more than 50% of patients. The purpose of this study was to define a safe dose by analyzing the radiosurgical dose-response relationship and histological effects on the normal cochlear nerve in rabbit. The rabbits had computed tomography (CT)-guided stereotactic radiosurgery on their cochlear nerves in the internal auditory canal with a 4 mm collimator focusing of a gamma-u

Central projections of cochlear nerve fibers in the alligator lizard.

The auditory (cochlear) ganglion cells of the alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus) give rise to two types of peripheral fibers: tectorial fibers, which contact hair cells covered by a tectorial membrane, and free-standing fibers, which contact hair cells without a tectorial membrane. To determine the central projections of these fibers, we applied intracellular and extracellular injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the peripheral component of the cochlear nerve. After histological processing with diaminobenzidine, individual cochlear nerve fibers could be traced through seria

[Transtympanic neurectomy of the vestibular and cochlear nerves (author's transl)].

Tympanotomy and a transvestibular approach to the fundus of the internal auditory meatus is described. The surgical technique is modified from that proposed by Alvarez de Cozar and Antoli-Candela in 1970. The surgical anatomy of the operative sites is detailed. The surgical procedure is found indicated in patients in whom preservation of hearing is not considered and vestibular neurectomy required. The described technique provides a simple but efficient and safe alternative to the translabyrinthine approach to the internal auditory meatus for division of the vestibular and cochlear nerves.

Sixteen years of cochlear implant surgery in cochleovestibular malformation and cochlear nerve deficiency: Insights from northern Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital sensorineural hearing loss associated with cochleovestibular malformations (CVM) and/or cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) presents distinct surgical and audiological challenges. Patients with CVM face elevated risks of intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) gushers and aberrant facial nerve courses, while those with CND have historically been viewed as poor candidates for cochlear implantation (CI) due to concerns regarding neural sufficiency. This study aims to bridge this gap by evaluating the surgical safety and audiological outcomes of CI in a focused cohort of pat
