We present a case-series comparison of patients with cross-modal semantic impairments consequent on either (a) bilateral anterior temporal lobe atrophy in semantic dementia (SD) or (b) left-hemisphere fronto-parietal and/or posterior temporal stroke in semantic aphasia (SA). Both groups were assessed on a new test battery designed to measure how performance is influenced by concept familiarity, typicality and specificity. In line with previous findings, performance in SD was strongly modulated by all of these factors, with better performance for more familiar items (regardless of typicality),

The possibilities of the use of electroencephalography for evaluating intellectual-mnemonic disorders in elderly patients with cerebral atherosclerosis have been studied. The study included 95 subjects aged 60 to 74 years with varying intensity of circulatory atherosclerotic encephalopathy (without brain stroke). The psychological tests were performed according to Wechsler's methods. To evaluate the EEG, visual and automatic spectral analyses were employed. The data obtained were analyzed by means of discriminant, correlation and regression methods. A certain relationship was found between the

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Eating disorders (EDs) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) are severe psychiatric conditions characterized by emotional dysregulation and impairments in social cognition. Growing evidence suggests that inflammatory and oxidative stress pathways may contribute to their pathophysiology. The present study aimed to explore the association between social cognition performance and immune-inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers in individuals with BPD, restrictive ED (EDR), and purging ED (EDP) vs healthy controls (HC), using a pathway-based psychoneuroimmunologica

BACKGROUND: Cardiometabolic disorders (hypertension, diabetes) are key modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. They often co-occur; yet, the extent to which they independently affect brain structure and function is unclear.
OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized their combined effect is greater in associations with cognitive function and neuroimaging biomarkers of white matter (WM) health and cerebral perfusion in a diverse older adult cohort.
METHODS: Participants aged 50-85 years received: clinical evaluation, oral glucose tolerance testing, neuroimaging, cognitive testi

Balance disorders related to disturbances in perception of spatial reference systems are common especially after right hemispheric stroke. Mental misrepresentation of bodily orientation in space is then often superimposed upon other factors affecting imbalance such as motor and sensory impairments. Traditional rehabilitation for balance recovery has not been specifically designed to improve balance disorders related to spatial cognition. The traditional approach, consisting of stimulating the conscious perception of body orientation in space, is demanding and laborious. The approach based on s

BACKGROUND: Social cognition is an important aspect of social behavior in humans. Social cognitive deficits are associated with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. In this study we examine the neural substrates of social cognition and face processing in a group of healthy young adults to examine the neural substrates of social cognition.
METHODS: Fifty-seven undergraduates completed a battery of social cognition tasks and were assessed with electroencephalography (EEG) during a face-perception task. A subset (N=22) were administered a face-perception task during functional magn

OBJECTIVES: Since the discovery of psychopharmacological treatments in the early 1950s, followed by the development of second-generation antidepressants and antipsychotics, biological psychiatry has not achieved much progress. Recent technological advances in the field of non-invasive brain stimulation open new perspectives in the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Amongst them, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) modulates cortical excitability and induces long-lasting effects. Here, we aimed at evaluating whether tDCS has potential to be developed as an innovative treatment in ps

Individuals with schizophrenia exhibit consistent deficits in social cognition such as emotion perception, attributional style, and theory of mind, which may be targets of psychosocial treatments. Previous intervention studies have typically focused on only one aspect of social cognition and have not assessed generalization of treatment to improvements in social functioning. This paper describes preliminary data from a new group-based treatment, Social Cognition and Interaction Training (SCIT), aimed at improving social cognition in schizophrenia. Eighteen inpatients with schizophrenia spectru

The purpose of the study was to find some characteristic features of cortical defects in the neuropsychological examination of children with SSPE. These findings could be very useful in early differential diagnosis. We analysed the results of the neuropsychological assessment of 13 children selected from a group of 100 patients. The most frequent defects were found in the visuo-spatial functions. The clinical analysis of the obtained results was studied in view to establish, whether there are the signs of the dysfunction of the right or both cerebral hemispheres.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have explored the association between cognitive reserve (CR) and the trajectory of psycho-cognitive function, particularly the interactive effect of physical disorders (PDs).
METHOD: Main analyses used data from middle-aged and older adults in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), with replication using data from the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Latent class analysis was applied to classify participants based on baseline CR-related factors (education, occupation, stress, social engagement, physical activities, and marriage). BACKGROUND: Cognitive model of panic disorder have proposed that panic attacks result from the catastrophic misinterpretation of certain bodily sensations. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for panic disorder aims to change these catastrophic cognitions. CBT intervention successfully caused reduction of catastrophic cognitions and symptomatic improvement in the majority of cases. However there are some patients who fail to modify their catastrophic cognitions or rather experience an increase in them during CBT treatment. It is clinically and theoretically important to understand about cogniti

In neurologic disorders, there are progressive losses in regional brain structural integrity, circuitry, and neuronal process that threaten individuals' ability to express functional capacity at several levels of severity. The classification of (a) patients on the basis of diagnosis, risk prognosis, and intervention outcome forms the basis of clinical staging and (b) laboratory animals on the basis of animal model of brain disorder, extent of insult and dysfunctional expression, provides the components for the clinical staging and preclinical staging, respectively, of the disease state with ce

Individuals with Hoarding Disorder (HD) frequently complain of problems with attention and memory. These self-identified difficulties are often used as justification for saving and acquiring behaviors. Research using neuropsychological measures to examine verbal and visual memory performance and sustained attention have reported contradictory findings. Here we aim to determine the relationship between self-reported problems with memory and attention, objective memory and attention performance, and self-reported depression and anxiety symptoms in HD. Data was available for 319 individuals who p

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive disorders are a clinical and research challenge; in particular, the mild cognitive disorder (MiCD) requires diagnostic suspicion and tools with adequate performance for its detection. The objective of this study was the validation of a short cognitive test (CATest) for the detection of MiCD in population of 50 years or more.
METHODS: A diagnostic accuracy study was assembled and performed in a prospective cohort. A consecutive sample of 200 Colombian subjects who represented the whole spectrum of the condition of interest allowed us to reach the objective. Validity was

OBJECTIVE: In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in reports upon social-cognition impairments in bipolar disorder. This study aimed to compare the characteristics of social cognition domains in bipolar I (BD I) and II (BD II) based on the findings to date.
METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on Web of Science and PubMed from inception to 28 August 2024. Studies with all-age-group of ICD-10, DSM-IV, DSM-IV-TR, or DSM-5 defined BD (I or II) either in a remitted or symptomatic state were included. The risk of bias was measured using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and th

BACKGROUND: Early onset ataxia (EOA) and Early Onset Dystonia (EOD) are movement disorders developing in young people (age <25 per definition). These disorders result from dysfunctional networks involving the cerebellum and basal ganglia. As these structures are also important for cognition, cognitive deficits can be expected in EOA and EOD. EOA and EOD sometimes co-occur, but in those cases the predominant phenotype is determining. A pending question is whether predominantly EOA and EOD have different profiles of cognitive impairment.
OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether cognitive functions w

The Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis has been implicated in the pathophysiology of a variety of mood and cognitive disorders. Neuroendocrine studies have demonstrated HPA axis overactivity in major depression, a relationship of HPA axis activity to cognitive performance, and a potential role of HPA axis genetic variation in cognition. In schizophrenia differential HPA activity has been found, including higher rates of non-suppression to dexamethasone challenge and higher salivary cortisol levels, which have been a premonitory risk factor for conversion to psychosis in adolescents at r
