Cigarette smoking status in pathological gamblers: association with impulsivity and cognitive flexibility.

BACKGROUND: While the majority of pathological gamblers are current cigarette smokers (CS), some have quit smoking (former smokers, FS) while others never smoked (never smokers, NS). The reasons for elevated smoking rates in pathological gambling are not known, but gamblers may use nicotine as a putative cognitive enhancer. This study evaluated impulsivity and cognitive flexibility in a sample of pathological gamblers with differing smoking status. METHODS: Fifty-five subjects with pathological gambling (CS, n=34; FS, n=10; NS, n=11) underwent cognitive assessments using the Stop-Signal (SST)

Flexible adjustment of the effective connectivity between the fronto-parietal and visual regions supports cognitive flexibility.

Evidence indicates the significance of the fronto-parietal regions and inertia sensory processing from previous trials in cognitive flexibility. However, how flexible cognitive performance is achieved by causal interactions between cortical regions, particularly those between the fronto-parietal and stimulus processing regions, remains unknown. In the current study, the effective connectivity between the fronto-parietal and visual regions was examined in the context of a cued task-switching paradigm. We found that the fronto-parietal and visual cortex were differently activated during task tra

Identification of conserved frontal neurophysiological markers of cognitive flexibility in humans and rats.

Cognitive flexibility broadly describes behavioral alterations made in response to environmental changes and is fundamental for survival. While human and non-human animal assessments of cognitive flexibility are available, a systematic cross-species comparison of behavioral, neurophysiological, and computational markers of cognitive flexibility has not been reported. Using versions of a probabilistic reversal learning task aligned between humans and rats, electroencephalogram recordings reveal a frontal reward positivity (RewP) associated with unexpected reward outcomes. Reinforcement Q-learni

Cognitive flexibility in women who recovered from anorexia nervosa - a model-based approach.

Research findings on cognitive flexibility (CF) functioning in women who recovered from anorexia nervosa (RAN) were found to be inconsistent. This was attributed to the multiple definitions of CF and the diverse measuring tools used to assess it. Applying a deductive approach to explore CF function may address these inconsistencies; thus, we used a model that divides CF into three subtypes, namely, stimulus-response mapping, switching sets and task switching. Additionally, we explored the association between CF subtypes and the disorder's clinical measures to assess the relation of CF to recov

Impaired cognitive flexibility in major depressive disorder: Evidences from spatial-temporal ERPs analysis.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) may exhibit impairments in cognitive flexibility. This study investigated whether the cognitive flexibility deficits in MDD are evident across general stimuli or specific to emotional stimuli, while exploring the underlying neuropsychological mechanism. METHODS: A total of 41 MDD patients and 42 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded when participants performed a non-emotional and an emotional task switching paradigm (N-ETSP and ETSP), both of which assessed cognitive flexibility. Psychological flexibility as a potential change factor in cognitive behavioural therapy of OCD.

BACKGROUND: To gain a better understanding about which aspects of the treatment work for obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), the investigation of possible change factors is essential. Psychological flexibility (PsyF) has been of interest in research on successful OCD therapy for some time. Exposure interventions and cognitive strategies in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for OCD may enhance PsyF. To date, however, no process studies have been published that clarify the role of PsyF as a possible change factor for the reduction of OCD symptoms. AIMS: This study investigates whether PsyF

Psilocybin therapy increases cognitive and neural flexibility in patients with major depressive disorder.

Psilocybin has shown promise for the treatment of mood disorders, which are often accompanied by cognitive dysfunction including cognitive rigidity. Recent studies have proposed neuropsychoplastogenic effects as mechanisms underlying the enduring therapeutic effects of psilocybin. In an open-label study of 24 patients with major depressive disorder, we tested the enduring effects of psilocybin therapy on cognitive flexibility (perseverative errors on a set-shifting task), neural flexibility (dynamics of functional connectivity or dFC via functional magnetic resonance imaging), and neurometabol

[Neurobiological correlates of cognitive flexibility in ADHD - A systematic review of the literature].

INTRODUCTION: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood psychiatric disorders, which persists to adulthood in 30-50% of the cases. Previous studies have shown that cognitive flexibility, which means to switch between two different rules, that can be tested with task switching paradigms, is affected. Although poor performance in cognitive flexibility tests has been demostrated, the neurobiological background is only partly known. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our review was to examine the neurobiological background of impairment of cognitive flexib

Alterations in cognitive flexibility in a rat model of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Exposure to stressful or traumatic events is associated with increased vulnerability to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This vulnerability may be partly mediated by effects of stress on the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and associated circuitry. The PFC mediates critical cognitive functions, including cognitive flexibility, which reflects an organism's ability to adaptively alter behavior in light of changing contingencies. Prior work suggests that chronic or acute stress exerts complex effects on different forms of cognitive flexibility, via actions on the PFC. Similarly, PFC dysfunction is

Frontal lobe and frontal-striatal substrates for different forms of human cognitive flexibility.

Frontal lobe and basal ganglia lesions have been associated with similar cognitive impairments, although their specialized roles in behavior are likely to be different. We examined whether these structures mediate distinctive or overlapping aspects of a complex behavioral process that has been associated with both neural sites, i.e. cognitive flexibility. Patients with focal ischemic lesions to the frontal lobe and basal ganglia were compared on two forms of cognitive flexibility: (1) shifting response set (i.e. reactive flexibility), and (2) producing a diversity of ideas (i.e. spontaneous fl

[Flexible Neural Encoding and Cognitive Function in the Frontal Lobe].

The frontal lobe is involved in various aspects of behavioral expression and is one of the neural bases supporting flexible behavioral selection. Here, we consider six points: (1)the diversity of frontal lobe functions that support behavior, (2)flexible information representation at the cellular level, (3)representation of behavioral context by oscillatory states, (4)the scale-free nature of fluctuations in brain activity, and (5)the possibility of critical states at the cellular level seen in fluctuations and synchronization. Finally, we consider (6)the semiotic significance of the nervous sy

Cognitive flexibility subtypes and anorexia nervosa symptom severity: Evaluating the contribution of perfectionism.

Impaired cognitive flexibility (CF) and elevated perfectionism are well-documented in anorexia nervosa (AN), yet their contribution to symptom severity remains unclear. The current study aimed to examine whether CF predicts symptom severity and whether perfectionism contributes to these associations, by applying a model-based approach distinguishing three CF subtypes. Thirty-one women with AN completed three CF tasks, as well as the Eating Disorders Examination-Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, assessing symptom severity, perfecti

Effects of Blood Flow Restriction Training on Cognitive Flexibility in Adolescent Volleyball Players.

Cognitive flexibility is crucial for volleyball athletes, enabling swift adaptation to dynamic game situations. While blood flow restriction (BFR) training has been suggested to enhance working memory, its specific effects on cognitive flexibility in volleyball players are not well understood. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of BFR combined with low-intensity aerobic exercise on cognitive flexibility in adolescent athletes, with a focus on the role of peripheral catecholamines. A randomized balanced crossover design was employed, involving 20 participants who completed four inte

Psychedelics, Spirituality, and Fundamentalism: A Brain Network Approach to Cognitive Flexibility and Rigidity.

This viewpoint reconceptualizes mysticism and fundamentalism as brain network disorders, with psychedelics like psilocybin, lysergic acid diethylamide, and N,N-dimethyltryptamine offering potential to modulate these states. By disrupting rigid neural patterns, psychedelics may foster cognitive flexibility, challenge inflexible belief systems, and offer therapeutic value for extremism and mental health disorders.
