Development and pilot testing of a counseling-plus-mHealth intervention to reduce risk for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection in young women with depression.

BACKGROUND: Depressed young women have elevated rates of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The objective of this study was to develop and pilot-test a counseling-plus-mHealth intervention to reduce sexual and reproductive health (SRH) risk in young women with depressive symptoms. METHODS: Using the Behavior-Determinants-Intervention logic model, we developed the Momentary Affect Regulation-Safer Sex Intervention (MARSSI) to address the challenges that depression imposes on SRH risk reduction efforts of high-risk young women: (I) in-person counseling using motiva

The preliminary study of individual cognitive behavior therapy for Japanese patients with social anxiety disorder.

Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of both individual and group cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) programs for social anxiety disorder (SAD) with patients in many countries. The present preliminary study reports the effectiveness of individual CBT for Japanese patients with SAD. Fifteen outpatients diagnosed with SAD completed an individual CBT program of six 50-min sessions with several components, including cognitive restructuring to modify cost and probability bias, repeated speech exposure, and homework about idiosyncratic anxiety-provoking situations. The results show that SAD sym

Cognitive distortions as a component and treatment focus of pathological gambling: a review.

The literature on the role of cognitive distortions in the understanding and treatment of pathological gambling (PG) is reviewed, with sections focusing on (a) conceptual underpinnings of cognitive distortions, (b) cognitive distortions related to PG, (c) PG therapies that target cognitive distortions, (d) methodological factors and outcome variations, and (e) conclusions and prescriptive recommendations. The conceptual background for distortions related to PG lies in the program of heuristics and biases (Kahneman & Tversky, 1974) as well as other errors identified in basic psychology. The lit

The role of imagery in the maintenance and treatment of snake fear.

Two studies assessed the role of mental imagery in the maintenance of fear of common phobic stimuli. Study 1 asked participants who were afraid of a wide range of phobic stimuli to report their visual and somatic imagery. Blind ratings of the imagery on horror and vividness were positively correlated with participant's self-reported fear and avoidance. Study 2 tested the efficacy of modifying imagery using cognitive restructuring compared to in vivo exposure and a minimal exposure, relaxation control in snake fearful participants. Both active treatment groups improved significantly more than t

Reconceptualizing emetophobia: a cognitive-behavioral formulation and research agenda.

Fear of vomiting (emetophobia) is a poorly understood anxiety disorder, with little research published into its conceptualization or treatment. The current article uses established cognitive and behavioral models of other anxiety disorders as a basis from which to propose a detailed model of emetophobia. The model proposes that emetophobia results from a constellation of factors including a general anxiety-vulnerability factor, a tendency to somatize anxiety as gastrointestinal distress, a tendency to catastrophically misappraise nausea and other gastrointestinal symptoms, hypervigilance to ga

A study on treatment sensitivity of ecological momentary assessment in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

As part of a larger clinical trial, this ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study pursued the main goal of demonstrating that the EMA method is sensitive to treatment effects of detached mindfulness and cognitive restructuring for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A second goal was to provide a descriptive analysis of OCD symptoms and influencing factors in participants' everyday lives. Thirty-nine participants were included in the final analyses. EMA sampling involved a smartphone and comprised 4 days with 10 random prompts per day both before (Pre-Treatment EMA) and after the completio

[Cognitive-behavioral therapy of conversion aphonia].

Although a common disease, conversion disorder still calls attention in the clinical practice. A case of conversion disorder, diagnosed as a psychogenic aphonia that persisted for a week, was reported in this paper. A 21-year-old woman developed symptoms after breaking off a long-lasting relationship with her boy-friend. History revealed that she was introvert with high neuroticism and communication problems. Cognitive-behavioral therapy was used. After the positive reinforcement in the therapy of her aphonia, assertion training for the development of communication skills was performed. In the

Social anxiety disorder.

Although social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and disabling disorder that may occur in different cultural settings, it is under-diagnosed by clinicians. In order to facilitate accurate diagnosis, the clinical features and differential diagnosis of SAD are described, together with useful assessment instruments for clinicians. Aetiological evidence suggests that the causal pathways for SAD include genetic, neurobiological, temperamental and cognitive factors. A range of effective treatments for SAD are available: current findings suggest that the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSR

Targeting Parental Risk Factors for Children's Anxiety: A Factorial Randomized Trial with Three Intervention Components.

OBJECTIVE: Parent-focused interventions have the potential to reduce parental risk factors for children's anxiety. We tested three theoretically distinct intervention components, targeting distinct parental risk factors, to improve understanding of the role of these factors in children's anxiety, and to guide intervention program development. METHOD: We used a 12-week factorial experiment with random allocation to any possible combination and order of three single-session online components: (1) reducing family accommodation, (2) increasing parental empathetic responses, and (3) cognitive rest

Effect of Inquiry-Based Stress Reduction on Well-being and Views on Risk-Reducing Surgery Among Women With BRCA Variants in Israel: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The high risk for breast and ovarian cancers conferred by being a carrier of BRCA1 or BRCA2 germline variant can negatively impact physical and psychological well-being. Novel nonpharmacological interventions on well-being in women with BRCA variants have rarely been reported. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a 12-week inquiry-based stress reduction (IBSR) program on psychological well-being, sleep quality, psychosocial variables, and attitudes toward risk-reducing surgical procedures among women in Israel who carried BRCA variants. Effects of change in dysfunctional beliefs and self-esteem in avatar-based cognitive therapy for symptoms of social anxiety disorder: a randomized parallel trial.

Social anxiety is both highly prevalent and debilitating, with dysfunctional beliefs playing a crucial role in its persistence. This randomized controlled trial examined whether a remote avatar-based intervention for restructuring dysfunctional beliefs was associated with changes in social anxiety symptoms in a sample with subclinical social anxiety disorder (SAD). Data from N = 235 participants who completed all study stages were included in the analyses. While participants in the intervention group were tasked with contradicting their personal dysfunctional beliefs verbalized by the avatar,

Mechanisms of cognitive-behavioral therapy effects on symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder: a network intervention analysis.

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a severe and undertreated condition. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the first-line psychosocial treatment for this common disorder, how the intervention works is insufficiently understood. Specific pathways have been hypothesized, but only one small study has examined the precise nature of treatment effects of CBT, and no prior study has examined the effects of supportive psychotherapy (SPT). METHODS: This study re-examined a large trial (n = 120) comparing CBT to SPT for BDD. Network intervention analyses were used to explore symp

Examination of the core cognitive components of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy: an analogue investigation.

We aimed to examine the core elements of cognitive behavioral therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy that target distressing negative cognitions, cognitive restructuring (CR) and cognitive defusion (CD), respectively. Participants (N=142) recalled a saddening autobiographical event, identified a distressing thought it triggered, and completed a task that induced rumination on these cognitions. They then completed one of four brief interventions that targeted these emotionally charged cognitions: analogue versions of CR and CD, and two control interventions. The personal negative cogniti

[Behavior therapy of anxiety disorders].

Behavior therapy is rapidly gaining on importance in the treatment of anxiety disorders. A brief overview of assessment and models of the origins and maintenance of anxiety is presented and demonstrated with a case example of strong avoidance behavior based on feared anxiety attacks in specific situations. The cognitive behavioral intervention comprised 4 sessions of treatment in the office with extensive self-exposure to the feared and previously avoided situation, namely driving the car on the highway and visiting shopping centers, between sessions. The exposure treatment in conjunction with

An uncontrolled evaluation of inpatient and outpatient cognitive-behavior therapy for bulimia nervosa.

Inpatient (n = 27) and outpatient (n = 22) cognitive-behavior therapy programs for bulimia nervosa were evaluated in an uncontrolled experiment. Both treatment conditions included exposure with response prevention and cognitive restructuring. Inpatient treatment had a mean length of stay of 5 weeks. Outpatient treatment lasted 15 weeks. Both groups were followed after the end of treatment. The results showed that both programs were effective in reducing problems associated with bulimia nervosa. The inpatient program led to very rapid progress, whereas the outpatient program led to more gradual

[Writing about emotional dissonance in client experiences benefits human service professionals].

The present study examined whether burnout and negative ruminations of helping professional were reduced by writing about their dissonant emotional experiences. Twenty helping professionals were randomly assigned to either the experimental condition (writing about emotionally dissonant experiences for three weeks) or the control condition (without writing). The results revealed that participants in the experimental condition had significantly lower scores for emotional dissonance than the control group immediately and three weeks after the experimental intervention. Qualitative analyses of the

Anger and assaultiveness of male forensic patients with developmental disabilities: links to volatile parents.

This study with 107 male forensic patients with developmental disabilities investigated whether exposure to parental anger and aggression was related to anger and assaultiveness in a hospital, controlling for background variables. Patient anger and aggression were assessed by self-report, staff-ratings, and archival records. Exposure to parental anger/aggression, assessed by a clinical interview, was significantly related to patient self-reported anger, staff-rated anger and aggression, and physical assaults in hospital, controlling for age, intelligence quotient, length of hospital stay, viol

Cognitive-behavioral treatment of health-impairing food phobias in children.

Three cases reports describe assessment and treatment of three boys (ages 6 to 8 years) hospitalized because of weight loss and malnutrition, caused by severe dietary restriction and/or refusal to eat solid food. Psychological, behavioral, and medical assessments indicated that the boys were of average intelligence, without other significant psychological or medical disorders. Their eating disturbances were conceptualized as phobic disorders maintained by family factors reinforcing the children's avoidant behaviors. Cognitive-behavioral treatment consisted of an individualized combination of c

Vagal influence during worry and cognitive challenge.

The primary foci of the study were exploration of the linkage between cognitive and autonomic inflexibility of worry and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and examination of the effects of an analog cognitive restructuring task on this relationship. Cardiac responses of GAD and non-GAD participants were measured to examine the sympathetic and parasympathetic effects of worry and cognitive challenge. Diagnostic groups of undergraduate students were determined via administration of a structured interview, yielding a GAD group (n=16) and a control group (n=19) of individuals without GAD, depress

Cognitive emotion regulation strategies and neuroticism in relation to depressive symptoms following burn injury: a longitudinal study with a 2-year follow-up.

Sustaining burns is considered a stressful life event that has the power to elicit depressive symptoms. This study aimed to identify predictors of depressive symptoms by investigating the role of demographic variables, the number of operations (burn severity), neuroticism, and cognitive emotion regulation styles as possible influencing factors. Data from 242 patients with burns were analyzed employing latent growth modeling. The level of depressive symptoms across the 2-year interval was associated with burn severity, higher levels of neuroticism and rumination, and lower levels of positive re
