Economic evaluation in implementation science: Making the business case for implementation strategies.

Implementation researchers have made notable progress in developing and testing implementation strategies (i.e., highly-specified methods used to help providers improve uptake of mental health evidence-based practices: EBPs). Yet, implementation strategies are not widely applied in healthcare organizations to improve delivery of EBPs. Economic considerations are a key factor influencing the use of implementation strategies to deliver and sustain mental health evidence-based practices, in part because many health care leaders are reluctant to invest in ongoing implementation strategy support wi

Validation of the structure of the perceived meanings of cancer pain inventory.

This study examined the structure of a newly developed instrument measuring the meaning of cancer pain for Taiwanese patients. The Perceived Meanings of Cancer Pain Inventory (PMCPI) was developed based on Lazarus's cognitive theory of emotion and on findings from qualitative interviews. The 27-item PMCPI contains six scales: loss, threat, challenge, blame-others, blame-self, and spiritual awareness. Two hundred cancer patients from three hospitals in northern Taiwan who were experiencing pain were included in the study. A series of confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to test the fit o

Menthol Cigarettes, Tobacco Dependence, and Smoking Persistence: The Need to Examine Enhanced Cognitive Functioning as a Neuropsychological Mechanism.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the overall decline in the prevalence of cigarette use in the United States, menthol cigarette use among smokers is rising, and evidence shows that it may lead to more detrimental effects on public health than regular cigarette use. One of the mechanisms by which nicotine sustains tobacco use and dependence is due to its cognitive enhancing properties, and basic science literature suggests that menthol may also enhance nicotine's acute effect on cognition. AIMS AND METHODS: The purpose of this review is to suggest that the cognitive enhancing effects of menthol may be a

The metabolic regulator: Why energy constraints imply generative models.

We argue that under minimal thermodynamic and control-theoretic assumptions, metabolic constraints imply generative cognition. We formalize cognition as a resource-bounded controller of probability flows, where metabolic budgets define path-space divergence constraints. This reframes inference as a physically instantiated process governed by metabolic regulation, implying that progress in the cognitive sciences requires grounding cognitive models in nonequilibrium thermodynamics and dynamical systems.

Effects of Artificial Intelligence-Supported Education on Critical Thinking, Problem-Solving, Clinical Reasoning, and Decision-Making in Health Science Education: A Systematic Review of Interventional Studies.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly incorporated into health science education through diagnostic systems, intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive learning platforms, chatbots, virtual patients, and large language models. However, its effects on higher-order cognitive skills remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize interventional evidence on the effects of AI-supported education on critical thinking, problem-solving, clinical reasoning, and decision-making among health science learners. METHODS: This systematic review followed PRISMA 2020 and a prospectively registered

Empowerment of women with purging-type bulimia nervosa through nutritional rehabilitation.

Since the primary role of psychoeducation in eating disorders is to act as a foundation for other interventions, nutritional rehabilitation should use the same therapeutic principles as psychotherapy. This paper looks at the possibility that traditional psychoeducational results can be enhanced in patients with bulimia nervosa by a new nutritional rehabilitation programme focused on psychobiological reorganization of eating behaviour as opposed to the prescription of regular eating patterns. Forty women with purging-type bulimia nervosa were enrolled for a 24-week experimental period of cognit

Cognitive development and behaviour in very low birthweight twins at four years.

This study included two groups of 37 children, one of twins and the other singletons at 4 years of age. All subjects has birthweights under 1500 grams and individuals in the groups were matched for birth date, gender and birthweight. Except when parental socio-economic status was taken into account, no significant differences between twins and singletons were observed on any of the results of The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale, nor were there any when the twins and singletons were divided into groups with birthweights < 1000 grams and 1000 to 1499 grams. When cognitive scores were analysed

State of the clinical science of perioperative brain health: report from the American Society of Anesthesiologists Brain Health Initiative Summit 2018.

Cognitive recovery after anaesthesia and surgery is a concern for older adults, their families, and caregivers. Reports of patients who were 'never the same' prompted a scientific inquiry into the nature of what patients have experienced. In June 2018, the ASA Brain Health Initiative held a summit to discuss the state of the science on perioperative cognition, and to create an implementation plan for patients and providers leveraging the current evidence. This group included representatives from the AARP (formerly the American Association of Retired Persons), American College of Surgeons, Amer

Racism in the science and practice of psychotherapy.

We discuss a recent controversy that occurred in The Cognitive Behavioural Therapist over whether Lilienfeld's critical views on microaggressions theory and research reflect racist beliefs, as alleged by some. This is one of many recent examples of a profoundly antiscientific practice whereby racism allegations chill scientific debate and open inquiry on important research issues. This produces an overtly politicized science that has a corrosive effect on scientific progress and ultimately the useful application of research in clinical practice. The microaggressions controversy provides an esp

The science of reading meets the science of learning: memory systems, structured literacy, and the role of AI.

As terms like the Science of Reading and Science of Learning gain prominence in education policy and practice, there is a growing need to clarify what learning entails at a cognitive systems level. In this perspective review, we argue that meaningful instructional practice, particularly in the context of artificial intelligence (AI), must align with the distinct yet interacting memory systems that support human learning across development. Drawing on cognitive science, neuroscience, and educational psychology research, we provide a functional overview of implicit and explicit memory systems an

The metabolic turn: Implications between the model and the system.

I offer further support for a metabolic turn in cognitive science and raise two questions for metabolic considerations in modeling: I first invite the authors to consider broader tensions between computational and metabolic models; I then discuss possible connections between the relevance attributed to metabolic considerations for modeling and ontological background commitments about cognitive systems.

Exploring the molecular mechanisms by which exercise improves cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease based on the brain-gut microbiota axis: bibliometrics and visualization analysis.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson' s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease, and its cognitive impairment, as an important non-motor symptom, seriously affects the quality of life of patients. In recent years, the brain-gut flora axis, as a key pathway connecting the central nervous system(CNS) and intestinal microecology, has gradually become the forefront of research on cognitive dysfunction in PD. A large number of studies have shown that the imbalance of intestinal flora is closely related to the occurrence of cognitive impairment in PD, revealing molecular mechanisms such as inflammatory

Working memory capacity and the saving-enhanced memory effect.

People often save information by storing it on a computer or smartphone for future use, thus preserving cognitive economy and reducing processing demands [Risko, E. F., & Gilbert, S. J. (2016). Cognitive offloading. Trends in Cognitive Sciences, 20(9), 676-688. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.tics.2016.07.002]. Such cognitive offloading is associated with mnemonic benefits including a phenomenon known as saving-enhanced memory. [Storm, B. C., & Stone, S. M. (2015). Harnessing neuroplasticity.

Twenty years ago, cognitive impairments were recognized as an unmet treatment need in schizophrenia. Basic science discoveries in neuroplasticity had led to cognitive training approaches for dyslexia. We wondered whether a similar approach could target working memory deficits in schizophrenia by harnessing plasticity in the auditory cortex. Our per protocol experimental therapeutics studies tested the hypothesis that sharpening auditory cortical representations would result in better verbal learning and memory. We also later studied the effects of intensive training of basic social cognitive o
