Impact of sweet drink on pituitary response and subject comfort during insulin tolerance test.

The insulin tolerance test (ITT) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of cortisol and growth hormone (GH) deficiencies. Once hypoglycemia is detected whether patients should receive carbohydrates to recover faster from hypoglycemia is controversial. The aim of our study was to assess the impact of shortening the duration of hypoglycemia by providing a sugar drink on patient comfort and hormonal responses. This prospective, single-center, crossover, single-blind study enrolled 15 healthy participants. Each subject performed two ITT: one with normal Cola and the other with Cola Zero. Glucose a

Rodent contamination of soft drinks: An evaluation of postmortem changes.

Eight rodents were submitted for necropsy after being found in soft drink beverages. To determine whether the postmortem changes in these mice were consistent with contamination at the time of bottling/canning or after the beverage was opened by the consumer, we conducted a study of the effects of prolonged rodent submersion in soft drinks. Thirty unmanipulated laboratory mice, euthanized for other reasons, were placed in bottled beverages (diet and regular cola, sweet and unsweetened tea, seltzer water, and water) for time intervals ranging from 3 days to 2 months. Starting at the 1-week time

Mitigating chronic respiratory disease through the lens of multimorbidity: the MARES mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), are among the leading non-communicable diseases (NCDs) worldwide. However, diagnosing CRDs in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) remains challenging due to limited access to spirometry and trained professionals. Aggravating the burden, CRDs often coexist with other NCDs, increasing healthcare costs, reducing quality of life and elevating mortality. These challenges highlight the need for simple case-finding approaches for CRDs, such as the COPD in Low-Income and Middl

Burnett's "Cocaine" for dandruff.

Joseph Burnett manufactured the diethyl ether used for William T.G. Morton's public demonstration of inhaled surgical anesthesia on October 16, 1846 (Ether Day). A later Burnett product was a hairdressing oil claimed to prevent baldness and dandruff. It contained cocoa-nut oil and was called Cocoaine. In 1902 and 1903, it was sometimes advertised as Burnett's Cocaine (rather than Cocoaine), possibly to emulate the economic success of coca-based beverages such as Vin Mariani and Coca-Cola. Coca leaves are now decocainized before use in preparation of Coca-Cola, and the recovered cocaine is used
