Effects of room temperature, seasonal condition and food intake on finger skin temperature during cold exposure test for diagnosing hand-arm vibration syndrome.

For diagnosing the hand-arm vibration syndrome, peripheral circulation and sensory tests immersing one hand in cold water at 10 degrees C for 10 min have been performed widely in Japan. The authors investigated the effects of room temperature, seasonal condition and food intake on the test results, especially finger skin temperature. Six healthy males were examined repeatedly under six different room temperatures at 10 degrees C, 15 degrees C, 20 degrees C, 22.5 degrees C, 25 degrees C and 30 degrees C. Eight healthy males were examined under room temperatures at 10 degrees C, 20 degrees C and

A cold-responsive liquid crystal elastomer provides visual signals for monitoring a critical temperature decrease.

Critical temperature indicators have been extensively utilized in various fields, ranging from healthcare to food safety. However, the majority of the temperature indicators are designed for upper critical temperature monitoring, indicating when the temperature rises and exceeds a predefined limit, whereas stringently demanded low critical temperature indicators are scarcely developed. Herein, we develop a new material and system that monitor temperature decrease, e.g., from ambient temperature to the freezing point, or even to an ultra-low temperature of -20 °C. For this purpose, we create a

Ambient temperature during gestation and cold-related adult mortality in a Swedish cohort, 1915-2002.

For all climatic regions, mortality due to cold exceeds mortality due to heat. A separate line of research indicates that season of birth predicts lifespan after age 50. This and other literature implies the hypothesis that ambient temperature during gestation may influence cold-related adult mortality. We use data on over 13,500 Swedes from the Uppsala Birth Cohort Study to test whether cold-related mortality in adulthood varies positively with unusually benign ambient temperature during gestation. We linked daily thermometer temperatures in Uppsala, Sweden (1915-2002) to subjects beginning a

How do we maintain a dual inventory of room temperature stored platelets with cold-stored platelets?

BACKGROUND: There has been renewed interest in cold-stored platelets (CSPs) for the management of bleeding patients. CSPs might offer advantages over conventional room temperature stored platelet units (RTP), such as a lower risk of bacterial growth during storage, a longer shelf lf life, and possibly improved hemostatic effectiveness. However, CSPs have reduced in vivo survival compared to RTP. In 2023, the FDA issued guidance allowing 14-day storage of CSPs for the treatment of active bleeding when conventional platelets are not available or their use is not practical. This How Do We describ

Shelf-life boundaries of Listeria monocytogenes in cold smoked salmon during refrigerated storage and temperature abuse.

Cold smoked salmon (CSS) is a high-value ready-to-eat product, but it generally has a short shelf-life even under refrigeration and can support the growth of Listeria monocytogenes. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the growth and survival of L. monocytogenes in CSS during refrigerated storage and temperature abuse. The growth and survival data of L. monocytogenes (116 records, 465 data points) were retrieved from ComBase (https://www.combase.cc). All records contained storage time and temperature, but other information (aw, pH, and salt) was not fully documented. Each data

The Optimization of Renal Graft Preservation Temperature to Mitigate Cold Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Kidney Transplantation.

Renal transplantation is the preferred treatment for patients with end-stage renal disease. The current gold standard of kidney preservation for transplantation is static cold storage (SCS) at 4 °C. However, SCS contributes to renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), a pathological process that negatively impacts graft survival and function. Recent efforts to mitigate cold renal IRI involve preserving renal grafts at higher or subnormothermic temperatures. These temperatures may be beneficial in reducing the risk of cold renal IRI, while also maintaining active biological processes such as inc

The Effect of Water Temperature during Cold-Water Immersion on Recovery from Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage.

This study investigated the effects of 5 and 15°C cold-water immersion on recovery from exercise resulting in exercise-induced muscle damage. 42 college-aged men performed 5×20 drop-jumps and were randomly allocated into one of 3 groups: (1) 5°C; (2) 15°C; or (3) control. After exercise, individuals from the cold-water immersion groups had their lower limbs immerged in iced water for 20 min. Isometric knee extensor torque, countermovement jump, muscle soreness, and creatine kinase were measured before, immediately after, 24, 48, 72, 96 and 168 h post-exercise. There was no between-group differ

Decreased expression of cold-inducible RNA-binding protein (CIRP) in male germ cells at elevated temperature.

Physiological scrotal hypothermia is necessary for normal spermatogenesis and fertility in mammals. Cirp is a recently identified cold-inducible RNA-binding protein that is inducible at 32 degrees C in mouse somatic cells in vitro. Cirp is constitutively expressed in the testis of mouse and structurally highly similar to RBM1, a candidate for the human azoospermia factor. To elucidate the role played by Cirp in spermatogenesis, we investigated its expression levels during spermatogenesis and after heat stress. In the mouse testis, cirp mRNA was detected in the germ cells, and the level varied

Cold-Sensing TRP Channels and Temperature Preference Modulate Ovarian Development in the Model Organism Drosophila melanogaster.

Temperature is perceived primarily via transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, which are integral to the molecular machinery sensing environmental and cellular signals. Functional evidence of TRP channels' involvement in regulating cold-induced developmental/reproductive responses remains scarce. Here, we show that mutations affecting cold-sensing TRP channels antagonize the reduction in ovarian development induced by low temperatures (reproductive dormancy) in Drosophila melanogaster. More specifically, mutants for brv1, trp, and trpl significantly lowered dormancy levels at 12 °C and ex

Transduction Mechanisms for Cold Temperature in Mouse Trigeminal and Vagal Ganglion Neurons Innervating Different Peripheral Organs.

AIM: To elucidate the molecular mechanism of cold sensing by visceral sensory endings, a side-by-side characterization of cold-sensitive (CS) neurons in adult mouse trigeminal (TG) and vagal ganglia (VG) was performed. METHODS: A combination of physiological, pharmacological, molecular, and genetic tools was employed on trigeminal and vagal neurons. RESULTS: CS neurons are more abundant in VG, and the majority co-express TRPA1. Cold-evoked responses are severely blunted in Trpa1 KO mice. In contrast, TRPM8 deletion or pharmacological TRPM8 blockade had little impact on VG cold sensitivity. I

Dietary fat supplementation relieves cold temperature-induced energy stress through AMPK-mediated mitochondrial homeostasis in pigs.

BACKGROUND: Cold stress has negative effects on the growth and health of mammals, and has become a factor restricting livestock development at high latitudes and on plateaus. The gut-liver axis is central to energy metabolism, and the mechanisms by which it regulates host energy metabolism at cold temperatures have rarely been illustrated. In this study, we evaluated the status of glycolipid metabolism and oxidative stress in pigs based on the gut-liver axis and propose that AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key target for alleviating energy stress at cold temperatures by dietary fat su

Recovering body temperature from acute cold stress is associated with delayed proinflammatory cytokine production in vivo.

A poor outcome of whole-body hypothermia often results from a late complication, rather than from acute effects of hypothermia. A low body (cell) temperature or the increase in the concentrations of the stress hormones cortisol, epinephrine, and norepinephrine in response to acute cold stress have been proposed as potent proinflammatory cytokine suppressant. In the current study, we tested the hypothesis that the recovery of body temperature from a whole-body intermittent cold-water immersion (CWI, at 13-14 °C for a total 170 min) is associated with a delayed response of proinflammatory cytoki

Regional and transmural myocardial temperature distribution in cold chemical cardioplegia: significance of critical coronary arterial stenosis.

There is a growing recognition of discrepancies in myocardial temperatures during cold chemical cardioplegia. This study was designed to determine the extent to which coronary arterial stenosis just sufficient to abolish vasodilatory reserve in the working heart, but still compatible with myocardial viability ("critical stenosis"), limits heat transfer from the heart during cardioplegic infusion compared to complete coronary occlusion and no stenosis (control). In nine dogs, temperatures were measured from the subepicardium, midwall, and subendocardium of the left ventricle in the distribution

Impact of Temperature Elevation on Microbial Communities and Antibiotic Degradation in Cold Region Soils of Northeast China.

This study systematically investigated the effects of temperature changes on the degradation of antibiotics in soil, as well as the alterations in microbial community structure and aggregation, through a field warming experiment in a greenhouse. Compared to non-warming soil, the warming treatment significantly accelerated the degradation rate of tetracyclines during soil freezing and mitigated the impact of environmental fluctuations on soil microbial communities. The greenhouse environment promoted the growth and reproduction of a wide range of microbial taxa, but the abundance of Myxococcota

Oxygenated machine perfusion at room temperature as an alternative for static cold storage in porcine donor hearts.

BACKGROUND: There is a continued interest in ex situ heart perfusion as an alternative strategy for donor heart preservation. We hypothesize that oxygenated machine perfusion of donor hearts at a temperature that avoids both normothermia and deep hypothermia offers adequate and safe preservation. METHODS: Cardioplegia-arrested porcine donor hearts were randomly assigned to six hours of preservation using cold storage (CS, n = 5) or machine perfusion using an oxygenated acellular perfusate at 21°C (MP, n = 5). Subsequently, all grafts were evaluated using the Langendorff method for 120 min. Me
