Description of the larva of Cybister (Melanectes) brevis Aubé, 1838 (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Cybistrinae).

Copy number variation (CNV) at 7q11.23 causes Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS) and 7q microduplication syndrome (7Dup), neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) featuring intellectual disability accompanied by symmetrically opposite neurocognitive features. Although significant progress has been made in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying 7q11.23-related pathophysiology, the propagation of CNV dosage across gene expression layers and their interplay remains elusive. Here we uncovered 7q11.23 dosage-dependent symmetrically opposite dynamics in neuronal differentiation and intrinsic excit

Attract and kill trees? No simple solution for Anoplophora glabripennis (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) control.

Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky), the Asian longhorned beetle, is a serious wood-boring pest of hardwood trees. There have been records that suggest Elaeagnus angustifolia L. (Elaeagnaceae) might be an "attract and kill" tree species for A. glabripennis, i.e., a tree that is attractive to A. glabripennis adults but kills their oviposited eggs. To evaluate the possibility of E. angustifolia as a control measure for A. glabripennis, we carried out a series of behavioral experiments in the laboratory and in the field. Results showed that: (i) A. glabripennis females preferred E. angustifoli

Two new species of Hesperopenna Medvedev & Dang, 1981 (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae) from Singapore.

Two new species of Hesperopenna Medvedev & Dang, 1981 are described from Singapore: H.temaseksp. nov. and H.bakerisp. nov. The specimens of both new species were collected by Charles Fuller Baker and found in the unidentified Galerucinae material deposited in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Hesperopennatemaseksp. nov. is diagnosed by the black extreme elytral suture in the basal third, antennae longer than the body, the structure of the penis, and the last abdominal ventrite with two deep U-shaped incisions in females. Hesperopennabakerisp. nov.

A new species of tiger beetle (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae) from the Death Valley ecosystem.

A new tiger beetle species, Cicindela timbisha Duran, Chambers, Nelson & Roman n. sp., of the tribe Cicindelini, is described from the Death Valley ecoregion of eastern California, USA. It is most similar to C. senilis G.Horn, 1866 but is distinguished on the basis of multiple morphological characteristics, including differences in maculations, chaetotaxy of the antennae and a statistically significant difference in body size (P<0.001). The new species also differs from C. senilis in that it is found in an isolated freshwater spring in an inland basin east of the Sierra Nevada mountains, where

Entomopathogenic nematodes for biological control of Psylliodes chrysocephala (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) in oilseed rape.

Winter oilseed rape (Brassica napus) is one of the largest crops in Europe and the cabbage stem flea beetle Psylliodes chrysocephala is one of its major pests. Since the ban of neonicotinoids for seed treatment, farmers apply pyrethroids in autumn to control the cabbage stem flea beetle. Current studies show that the insect develops resistance to this group of chemicals. Biological control with entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) represents a possible, environmentally friendly alternative control measure. In the present work, we considered three strategies to control the cabbage stem flea beetle

Beauveria bassiana (Hypocreales: Clavicipitaceae) Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Repel Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Coleoptera: Dryophthoridae).

The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bb) is used to control the red palm weevil (RPW) Rhyncophorus ferrugineus (Oliver). Beuveria bassiana can infect and kill all developmental stages of RPW. We found that a solid formulate of B. bassiana isolate 203 (Bb203; CBS 121097), obtained from naturally infected RPW adults, repels RPW females. Fungi, and entomopathogens in particular, can produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs). VOCs from Bb203 were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). GC-MS identified more than 15 VOCs in B. bassiana not present in uninoculated (co

Geographic Variation in Dominance of Spinosad Resistance in Colorado Potato Beetles (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae).

Eastern New York State is frequently the site of Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata, Say) populations with the highest observed levels of insecticide resistance to a range of active ingredients. The dominance of a resistant phenotype will affect its rate of increase and the potential for management. On organic farms on Long Island, L. decemlineata evolved high levels of resistance to spinosad in a short period of time and that resistance has spread across the eastern part of the Island. Resistance has also emerged in other parts of the country as well. To clarify the level of do

Successful Pupation of Small Hive Beetle, Aethina tumida (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), in Greenhouse Substrates.

The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, is an invasive pest that has spread globally. Western honey bees, Apis mellifera Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae), are considered the most important host and infestations can lead to collapse of colonies. Larvae feed on honey, pollen, and brood inside the hive and leave the hive as postfeeding wandering larvae to pupate in the surrounding soil. Other host species include bumble bees, stingless bees, and solitary bees, all of which can facilitate small hive beetle reproduction and are used for greenhouse crop pollination worldwide. Here, we investigat

Semiochemical and Communication Ecology of the Emerald Ash Borer, Agrilus planipennis (Coleoptera: Buprestidae).

Knowledge of buprestid chemical ecology is sparse but the appearance of the invasive pest Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire in North America has provided the impetus to study in detail the semiochemistry and ecology of this important buprestid. The macrocyclic lactone (3Z)-12-dodecenolide [(3Z)-lactone] is identified as a key antennally-active compound that is produced by females and attracts males. Though a weak trap attractant alone, when combined with the host kairomone (3Z)-hexenol and the important visual cue of a green canopy trap, significant increases in male trap capture occur, thus defin

Insecticidal Mechanism of Wintergreen Oil Against the Health Pest Paederus fuscipes (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae).

Paederus fuscipes, a health pest, causes dermatitis linearis in humans. Wintergreen oil exhibits optimal insecticidal activity against P. fuscipes. However, the insecticidal mechanism remains unclear not only in P. fuscipes but also in other pests. In this study, we explored the insecticidal mechanism of wintergreen oil in terms of its effect on the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) enzyme and detoxifying enzymes (carboxylesterase, glutathione-S-transferase, and mixed function oxidase); such effect was studied by fumigation both in vivo and in vitro in P. fuscipes male and female adults.

Reaction of Leaf Weevil Phyllobius arborator (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to Manganese Content in Diet.

Reaction of leaf weevil (Phyllobius arborator (Herbst)) to increased concentration of manganese in diet was investigated in laboratory rearing with controlled temperature, humidity, and light conditions. Food for leaf weevils in rearing (leaves of birch Betula pendula Roth) was contaminated by soaking the leaves in solutions of MnCl2.4H2O with graded concentration of manganese. Direct influence of food was characterized by the consumed amount of leaves, period of feeding, and weight of P. arborator adults. At the same time, the levels of manganese in unconsumed food, excrement, and bodies of a

Modification of postmortem wounds by Dermestes maculatus (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) activity: A preliminary study.

The purpose of this analysis was to evaluate the effects of insect activity on hacking trauma which was inflicted with a small cleaver and a razor blade under controlled conditions. Three pig hooves were each subjected to a blow with a small cleaver and a cut with a razor blade prior to insect exposure. We used Dermestes maculatus DeGeer 1774 species. These beetles made principally depressions and destruction on both wounds, and bites were observed on the edges of the wounds. As time passed and insects fed and refuge, chop marks were deformed and disappeared, taking this less than a month. Thu

Identification of food volatiles attractive to dusky sap beetle,Carpophilus lugubris (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae).

The chemical mediation of host-finding was investigated for the dusky sap beetle,Carpophilus lugubris Murray. GC-MS analysis of the headspace volatiles above whole-wheat bread dough inoculated with baker's yeast, a substrate previously determined to be an effective attractant, revealed seven major components in the following order of decreasing concentration: ethanol, acetaldehyde, 2-methylpropanol, 3-methylbutanol, propanol, 2-methylbutanol, and ethyl acetate. Solutions of these seven compounds blended so as to mimic the odor of whole-wheat bread dough elicited upwind orientation from 1.8 m i

The Role of Cuticular Hydrocarbons in the Intraspecific Sexual Recognition Of Cyclocephala barrerai (Coleoptera: Melolonthidae).

A mixture of hydrocarbons of different molecular weights covers the Coleoptera cuticle, protecting the insects from desiccation and, in some cases, providing information about their physiological state. Courtship and mating in Cyclocephala barrerai Martínez begin when the male's antennae touch the female's thorax and elytra. The male antennae of C. barrerai have sensilla that detect hydrocarbons; however, the role of these compounds in the mating behavior of this beetle species remains unknown. Here, we analyzed the behavioral responses of both sexes of C. barrerai to conspecific cuticular hyd

Structure and diversity of abdominal exocrine glands in larvae of Leiodidae (Insecta: Coleoptera: Staphylinoidea).

Epidermal glands are well-known in adult beetles, but their presence and function are less studied in larvae. This study reveals, for the first time for the family Leiodidae, the morphology and ultrastructure of epidermal, paired glands of abdominal segments present in larvae. They are documented in all larval stages of the scavenger beetle Sciodrepoides watsoni watsoni (using a multimodal microscopic approach: light and scanning electron, and transmission electron microscopy). Overview of these structures is also documented for other representatives of Leiodidae and Agyrtidae, basal lineages

Morphological study on the larvae of different instars of Bodilus gregarius (Coleoptera: Aphodiinae: Aphodiini).

The majority of species in the genus Bodilus (Aphodiinae, Aphodiini) are coprophagous, playing a crucial role in maintaining the cleanliness of the natural environment. However, compared with adults, research on the larvae of this group is significantly insufficient. In light of this, the present study focused on the larvae of Bodilus gregarius and used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to provide the first detailed description of the ultrastructural features of larvae at different instars. It was found that the larvae of B. gregarius have three instars. After comparing the ultrastructures of

Microscopic analysis of the digestive and reproductive tracts of male Silpha obscura (Coleoptera: Silphidae).

Silpha obscura Linnaeus, 1758 (Coleoptera: Silphidae) is an omnivorous beetle species known for damaging agricultural crops, making it an important target for pest control strategies. Despite its impact, no studies have yet examined the anatomical and histological structures of the male digestive and reproductive tracts of S. obscura. Therefore, this study aimed to describe these structures in detail, which could provide insights into potential control methods. Twenty individuals were collected and histologically processed, with observations made using light microscopy. The digestive tract of

Sox genes in Agasicles hygrophila (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) are involved in ovarian development and oogenesis.

The alligator weed flea beetle, Agasicles hygrophila is a monophagous natural enemy of the invasive alligator weed Alternanthera philoxeroides. Oogenesis plays a vital role in the process of individual development and population continuation of oviparous insects. Sox is an ancient and ubiquitous metazoan gene family that plays a key regulatory role in various physiological processes, including oogenesis, which is closely related to fecundity. In this study, two Sox genes AhDichaete and AhSox3 were cloned and characterized, and then the expression profiles of AhDichaete and AhSox3 were qualifie
