Calcific tendinitis most commonly occurs to the shoulder, but may also involve other structures of the locomotor system. It is a rare cause of knee pain. We report a 46-year-old woman with severe medial knee pain and limitation of movement in her right knee. There was a marked tenderness site at the proximal insertion of the medial collateral ligament (MCL). Flexion was able to provoke the painful symptoms in the medial knee. The involvement of differentiated diagnoses were excluded by history, laboratory and radiograph examinations, while X-ray, CT and MRI suggested calcific tendonitis of the

Pitchers are prone to elbow injuries because of high and repetitive valgus stresses on the elbow. The anterior bundle of the medial ulnar collateral ligament (MCL) of the elbow is the primary restraint and is often attenuated with time, leading to functional incompetence and ultimate failure. Pitchers with a history of medial elbow pain, reduced velocity, and loss of command may have an MCL injury in evolution. Physical examination and imaging can confirm the diagnosis. Treatment begins with rest and activity modification. All medial elbow pain is not MCL injury. Surgery is considered only for

PURPOSE: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries may result in disabling valgus instability in throwing athletes. We evaluated the docking technique for UCL reconstruction and describe a modification to the technique.
METHODS: UCL surgery was indicated in 20 high-level baseball players (13 professional and 7 collegiate) based on medial elbow pain preventing effective throwing, clinically apparent medial elbow laxity, and magnetic resonance arthrogram consistent with UCL injury. The mean age was 21.7 years (range, 17.9 to 25.3 years). One patient had previous UCL reconstruction. One had previ

The results after operations for rupture of the ulnar collateral ligament of the metacarpophalangeal joint of the thumb are reported to be good. Few authors describe the measurements used to assess the postoperative function of the thumb. We review the results of 15 patients, who underwent surgery between 1982 and 1987. We found that the number of patients satisfied with the operation was consistent with that reported in the literature. On the other hand, we found poor agreement between the subjective complaints and the objective findings. We therefore propose and describe a scoring system to

We retrospectively evaluated the lateral collateral ligamentous complex of 43 patients who had complained of ankle pain following ankle sprain. The MR signs of ligamentous abnormality included discontinuity or absence, increased signal within the ligament, and ligamentous irregularity or waviness with normal thickness and signal intensity. Using these criteria, 30 anterior talofibular, 20 calcaneofibular, and no posterior talofibular ligament injuries were diagnosed. Compared with surgery (nine patients), MRI demonstrated six of seven anterior talofibular ligament injuries and six of six calca

The anterior oblique component of the medial collateral ligament of the elbow is the mainstay of joint stability. Fractures of the medial epicondyle must be anatomically reduced, open if necessary. A fibrous union of a minimally displaced fractured medial epicondyle may result in lengthening and functional compromise of the medial collateral ligament. Chronic elbow instability is an unusual lesion. Repair of chronic elbow instability is best performed by restitution of medial collateral ligament function.

The collateral ligaments of the distal interphalangeal joint (CL-DIPJ) are important structures for athletic horses. Ligament injuries can cause lameness, but ultrasound imaging can detect such lesions, which usually present with changes in echogenicity and an increase in the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the ligament. Measurements of these structures vary among authors, which complicates the diagnosis. Thus, this study aimed to describe the ultrasound measurements (dorsopalmar diameter [DPD], lateromedial diameter [LMD], and CSA) of the CL-DIPJ in Argentine Polo horses. We measured the CL-DIP

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the deep medial collateral ligament (dMCL) and partial superficial MCL (psMCL) can cause anteromedial rotatory instability; however, the contribution of each these injuries in restraining anteromedial rotatory instability and the effect on the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) load remain unknown.
PURPOSE: To investigate the contributions of the different MCL structures in restraining tibiofemoral motion and to evaluate the load through the ACL after MCL injury, especially after combined dMCL/psMCL injury.
STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study.
METHODS: Sixteen fr

Articular degeneration can be characterized by fibrillation and eburnation of the articular layers of the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint. Structural changes within the articular joint predispose the development of osteophytes, enthesophytes and, in many cases is associated with changes the collateral ligaments of the MP joint. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between degenerative processes of the articular cartilage and the enthesopathies of collateral ligaments (superficial or deep portion) of the equine MP joint, using radiographic, ultrasonographic and anatom

Calcaneal fractures are the most frequent of the tarsus (3.5% of all fractures). Young adults are mainly affected, being more frequent in men (5.9:1). On the other hand, ligament injuries associated with fracture of the calcaneus are very infrequent. We describe a case of a 39 year old patient who suffered ankle trauma. He presented instability in plantar flexion and inversion. A fracture of the calcaneus was diagnosed. During surgery, a complete lesion of the lateral ligament complex was found. The reduction and osteosynthesis associated with ligament reconstruction was performed. We consider

PURPOSE: To define the bony attachments of the medial ligaments relative to anatomical and radiographic bony landmarks, providing information for medial collateral ligament (MCL) surgery.
METHOD: The femoral and tibial attachments of the superficial MCL (sMCL), deep MCL (dMCL) and posterior oblique ligament (POL), plus the medial epicondyle (ME) were defined by radiopaque staples in 22 knees. These were measured radiographically and optically; the precision was calculated and data normalised to the sizes of the condyles. Femoral locations were referenced to the ME and to Blumensaat's line and

INTRODUCTION: The aim of the present study was to determine the anatomical relationship and evaluate the potential interference of today's common distal humerus plates with the medial and lateral collateral ligaments of the elbow.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The elbow joints of 23 embalmed upper extremities were dissected. Three different brands of distal humerus double-plating systems were applied in a standardized fashion. We used a caliper to measure the amount of absolute overlap of the plates on the corresponding collateral ligaments.
RESULTS: The data show contact and overlap with the media

Veterinary radiology & ultrasound : the official journal of the American College of Veterinary Radiology and the International Veterinary Radiology Association2009eng
We report the use of a low-field magnetic resonance (MR) imaging system for the detection of desmopathy of the collateral ligament of the distal interphalangeal joint and the long-term outcome. Twenty horses were studied and their medical records and MR images were reviewed retrospectively. Long-term follow-up information was obtained by telephonic questionnaires of owners, trainers, or referring veterinarians. Desmopathy of the medial collateral ligament (80%) and enthesopathy of the affected collateral ligament (80%) were common MR imaging features. Treatment consisted of stall rest followed

BACKGROUND: While most medial-sided knee injuries can be managed conservatively, high-grade injuries of the posteromedial corner have been reported to have less than optimal outcomes with conservative approaches, resulting in residual valgus and rotational instability. Consensus among experts postulates that treatment should be based on reconstructing both the superficial medial collateral ligament (sMCL) and the posterior oblique ligament (POL). We present a modified technique of a tibial-sling anatomic MCL reconstruction with a POL limb.
INDICATIONS: High-grade injuries of the posteromedial

BACKGROUND: Objective data on chronic injuries of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the ankle are scarce. Chronic MCL injuries are frequently associated with lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injuries. For patients with chronic combined MCL and LCL injuries, the authors have performed simultaneous surgery of the 2 ligaments.
HYPOTHESIS: Simultaneous surgery of the 2 ligaments may be effectively used to treat chronic combined MCL and LCL injuries.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: Surgical outcomes were evaluated in 29 consecutive patients presenting with chroni

Medial collateral ligament of the knee is an important coronal stabiliser and often injured in isolation or as combination of injuries. The article reports a case of incarcerated medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury in combination with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in 20 year old male who presented to us 4 weeks after injury. Clinical examination and MRI was correlated to complete ACL tear with torn distal MCL and incarceration into the joint. Patient was taken up for ACL hamstring graft reconstruction with mini-arthrotomy and repair of the torn MCL. Patient was followed up with d

BACKGROUND: Lesions of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) are the most common knee ligament injuries and, when they occur in isolation, they often progress with satisfactory outcomes using conservative treatment. However, MCL lesions associated with anterior cruciate ligament or posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injuries in knee dislocations should be reconstructed to prevent failure of the central pivot. In knees with combined injuries involving the PCL and the MCL, the confluence of tunnels in the medial femoral condyle can be a potential problem during reconstruction surgery.

BACKGROUND: Hyperintensity in the proximal lateral collateral ligament (LCL) is often confusing. This appearance may be alone or accompany other pathologies.
PURPOSE: To investigate the relationship between the signal intensity (SI) change in the proximal LCL and the knee joint pathologies.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The knee MRI scans taken between 2020 and 2022 were queried retrospectively. Patients with acute trauma, instability, knee surgery, or high-grade osteoarthritis were excluded. Included patients were divided into two groups as normal SI and increased SI according to proximal LCL. The

The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is the most commonly injured ligament of the knee. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most commonly injured ligament in conjunction with the MCL. Most MCL injuries can be treated nonoperatively, whereas the ACL often requires reconstruction. A good physical examination is essential for diagnosis, whereas radiographs and MRI of the knee confirm diagnosis and help guide treatment planning. Preoperative physical therapy should be completed before surgical management to allow for return of knee range of motion and an attempt at MCL healing.
