A 43-year-old female fell backward outside her home while carrying a watering can. She sustained an ipsilateral fracture of the proximal ulna and distal radius (Colles fracture). The ulnar fracture was plated, and the Colles fracture was managed by closed reduction and percutaneous Kirschner wiring. The patient recovered without incident. This association of forearm fractures is unusual. Both fractures can be caused by a fall on the hand with the wrist in mid-extension and the elbow flexed, and they probably occurred in quick succession.

We describe a direct method of measuring the tightness of plaster casts. Tightness was measured weekly in 23 consecutive patients with Colles' fractures. Six had objective signs of algodystrophy nine weeks after the fracture. In these patients the plaster cast was significantly tighter during the first three weeks than in patients who did not develop algodystrophy. The complex relationship between these findings is discussed.

The radiographs of 25 patients who presented to the Whittington Hospital with Colles' fractures were studied. Measurements of dorsal angulation and radial shortening were made on radiographs taken at presentation, following reduction (where performed) and 5 weeks after injury. The presence, and degree, of osteoporosis was assessed using the metacarpal index. There was a strong correlation between the degree of osteoporosis and age. There was no correlation between the degree of osteoporosis, as determined by the metacarpal index, and either the severity of the injury or the final result. Thus,

Refracture of the radius through a pin site after the removal of pins and plaster or an external fixator for Colles fracture is rarely mentioned in the literature. We present the details of three such cases and review two others reported in the literature. Our aim is to alert orthopedists to the potential for this complication. Patients with superficial or deep pin tract infections appear to be at greater risk.

Colles fracture is the commonest fracture encountered in orthopedic practice that demands prompt therapeutic intervention, and adequate follow-up to ensure complete healing. Various types of fractures, methods of reduction, and healing have been explained in the classical Ayurveda texts. These techniques are scientific and time-tested. This paper aims to report the successful management of Colles fracture case using Ayurveda and modern techniques with the use of Murivenna (an oil-based herbal formulation mentioned in the contemporary texts of Ayurveda), half-cast POP, and aluminum splinted ban

Osteoporotic and age-related fractures are a significant public health problem. One of the most common osteoporotic fracture sites in the aging population is distal radius. There is evidence in the literature that distal radius fractures (Colles' fracture) are an indicative of increased risk of future spine and hip fractures. In this study, a nonlinear fracture mechanics-based finite element method is applied to human radius to assess its fracture load as a function of cortical bone geometry and material properties. Seven three-dimensional finite element models of radius were created and the f

OBJECTIVE: To discuss the management of a patient with wrist weakness and a diminution in active range of motion resulting from Colles' fracture.
CLINICAL FEATURES: A 58-year-old woman complained of persistent loss of grip strength and mobility in her right wrist. These complaints were from Colles' fracture occurring 19 months before initiation of care. Dynamometer and goniometric testing revealed significant loss of grip strength and range of motion compared with the uninvolved, nondominant wrist.
INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: Specific joint manipulation for improvement in mobility and grip str

SUMMARY. This study compared the outcomes of using two passive mobilizing techniques, passive sustained stretches and oscillations, to treat post-immobilization sequelae of Colles' fractures types I and III. The study used a type of single subject, multi-element design, to enable comparisons of the two techniques in the same subject, when rapid change and limited reversibility was expected and research had to occur concurrently with treatment. Eight female subjects were randomly assigned to predesigned sets of treatment conditions for six consecutive sessions. Each subject had completed the us

In a prospective investigation in 1984 and 1985, all Colles' fractures (not comminuted or intraarticular) that redisplaced after two closed reductions were allocated at random to one of two groups: Group I (n = 23), in which the dorsal bone deficiency was filled with bone cement (methylmethacrylate), and Group II (n = 25), in which the fracture was treated with external fixation. All were followed for one year and examined with respect to anatomy of the fracture, wrist movement, strength, appearance, pain, function, and complications. Roentgenograms, 12 months after treatment, showed that all

A randomized clinical study of functional bracing in supination (FUSU) versus dorsal plaster immobilization (DPI) was conducted in 145 patients with Colles' fracture. A dynamic wrist unit was developed and used in 68 patients allocated for FUSU. The anatomical end result after FUSU was excellent or good in 80% of the patients versus 64% after DPI (P less than 0.05), in particular due to less dorsal angulation (P less than 0.001) and less radial shortening. The functional recovery was equal after 7 weeks and 3 months. At 6 months, 92% satisfactory results were achieved after FUSU versus 86% aft

Loss of radial palmar tilt in malunion of Colles' fractures alters wrist biomechanics, abnormally loading the tenuous dorsal ligament complex. This can result in midcarpal instability with synovitis, pain, weakness, and possible articular degeneration. An osteotomy to correct radius alignment using a trapezoidal corticocancellous bone graft has been devised. The graft is harvested from the dorsal radius adjacent to the osteotomy and malunion site. When turned 90 degrees, a properly designed trapezoidal graft restores radial length, inclination, and palmar tilt in one step. Functional results i

There is a higher risk that the tendon of extensor pollicis longus will rupture in undisplaced Colles' type of fracture than in those which are displaced. This difference in incidence is due to the integrity of the extensor retinaculum in undisplaced Colles' type of fracture causing the tendon to be held tight against the fracture callus in the floor of the tunnel which may result in an attrition rupture. In the displaced Colles' fracture the extensor retinaculum is torn from the bone and thus permits the tendon to escape from contact with the fracture site.

The usual treatment of Colles' fracture, i.e. fracture of the distal radius with dorsal angulation of the distal fragment, is closed reduction and immobilization in a plaster cast. The position of the forearm in the cast varies, according to the reports of various authors. Forty-two extra-articular-fractures of the distal radius have been randomly divided into three groups. All were reduced, and the forearms were then immobilized in three different positions of rotation according to the grouping. The study indicates that the position of the forearm during immobilization is of importance as reg

UNLABELLED: Based on data searches and life-table analyses, we determined the long-term (remaining lifetime) and short-term (10- and 5-year) absolute risks of hip fracture after sustaining a Colles' or spine fracture and searched for potential gender-related differences. In aging men, Colles' fractures carry a higher absolute risk for hip fracture than spinal fractures in contrast to women. These findings support the concept that forearm fracture is an early and sensitive marker of male skeletal fragility.
INTRODUCTION: Colles' fracture occurrence has been largely ignored in public health app
