Third ventricular cysticercal cyst mimicking a colloid cyst: case report.

We describe a case of a 28-year-old Latino man who presented with signs and symptoms of raised intracranial pressure and radiographic evidence of a third ventricular cystic lesion. The cyst was removed via a transcallosal approach; the histology was noted to be a cysticercal lesion. The radiographic and histological features of this interesting case are discussed.

Surgical Management of Third Ventricular Colloid Cysts: The Fate of Open Microsurgery.

AIM: To report our experience with the outcomes of open microsurgical management of third ventricular colloid cysts. MATERIAL and METHODS: This retrospective study presents the surgical outcomes of 33 patients who underwent open microsurgical resection-either through the interhemispheric transcallosal or transcortical transventricular approach-for third ventricular colloid cysts between 2010 and 2023. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 41.57 months. All patients were symptomatic, and severe, intractable headache was the most common presenting symptom. No perioperative mortality or postoper

[Two cases of colloid cysts of the third ventricle with nasal rhinorrhea].

The authors present 2 cases of tumours of third ventricle with intracranial hypertension and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea. The cause of the CSF rhinorrhea most often was thinning of lamina ethmoidalis and dura mater and rarely intussusception of arachnoidea into the intrasellar space in patients with oval orifice for the stalk of pituitary body due to prolonged intracranial hypertension. Efficacious treatment of CSF rhinorrhea comprises not only removing of the tumor but also introducing the valve and in some cases tightening of the base of the anterior and middle fossa.

Do the suprasellar neurenteric cyst, the Rathke cleft cyst and the colloid cyst constitute a same entity?

Two cases of entirely suprasellar cysts are reported. Total surgical removal was performed in both cases. Pathological and immunohistochemical profiles were consistent with neurenteric cysts, Rathke's cleft cysts or colloid cysts and was also in keeping with an endodermal origin. It is now admitted that these three kinds of cysts share similar histological and immunohistological features. We propose an hypothesis of common embryological origin from endodermal remnants.

Combined endoscopic transforaminal-transchoroidal approach for the treatment of third ventricle colloid cysts.

Colloid cysts are histologically benign lesions whose primary goal of treatment should be complete resection to avoid recurrence and sudden death. Open surgery is traditionally considered the standard approach, but, recently, the endoscopic technique has been recognized as a viable and safe alternative to microsurgery. The endoscopic approach to colloid cysts of the third ventricle is usually performed through the foramen of Monro. However, this route does not provide adequate visualization of the cyst attachment on the tela choroidea. The combined endoscopic transforaminal-transchoroidal appr

A theory on the natural history of colloid cysts of the third ventricle.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with third ventricular colloid cysts typically are diagnosed when they develop symptoms related to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obstruction at the foramen of Monro. However, the clinical and neuroimaging characteristics related to symptom development are poorly understood. METHODS: From January 1974 to June 1998, 155 patients with newly diagnosed colloid cysts were managed at our center. Eighty-seven patients (56%) were thought to have tumor-related symptoms, and they underwent surgery (resection, n = 74; ventriculoperitoneal shunting, n = 11; stereotactic aspiration, n = 2).

The black rim susceptibility sign in the MRI evaluation of intracranial colloid cysts.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Colloid cysts are relatively rare intracranial lesions located in the rostral aspect of third ventricle. They may produce acute hydrocephalus, brain herniation, and death. On conventional MRI, the appearance of a colloid cyst varies depending on its composition. Small isointense cysts can be missed. The purpose of this study is to introduce a new sign, "black rim susceptibility" sign for the accurate diagnosis of colloid cyst on susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI). METHODS: A retrospective case-control study consisted of 100 MRI brain scans (19 cases and 81 controls)

Terson's syndrome after endoscopic removal of a colloid cyst.

An extremely rare complication of endoscopic colloid cyst removal is presented. Terson's syndrome related to endoscopic resection of a colloid cyst has been reported only twice before in the literature and it could be explained by intracranial hypertension related to rinsing during the procedure. The case is described and the complications in the neuroendoscopic removal of colloid cyst are reviewed from the literature.

Third Ventricular Colloid Cyst, New Surgical Classification.

BACKGROUND: This research discusses colloid cyst surgical concerns, with an emphasis on the value of a novel surgical classification based on anatomical sites. In the study, 59 patients who underwent surgical intervention between 2009 and 2022 and were diagnosed with colloid cysts via computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging participated. METHODS: There were more male cases than female ones (57.6%). The majority of patients presented with headache (79%), followed by abnormal gait (12%), visual blurring (5%), and seizures (4%). RESULTS: In this study, we present a new surgical

Acute hydrocephalus caused by a colloid cyst - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts are rare benign, slowly growing intracranial tumors of endodermal origin. Most colloid cysts are found incidentally and are asymptomatic, but rarely, they can lead to sudden death. CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old female patient was admitted to our emergency department with complaints of dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, walking difficulties, and behavioral changes. CT imaging revealed acute obstructive hydrocephalus attributable to a third ventricular colloid cyst. The patient was immediately transferred to a tertiary center where she underwent successful neuros

Isolated Intraventricular Neurocysticercosis: Atypical Presentation of a Colloid Cyst.

Neurocysticercosis is a condition characterized by the presence of Taenia solium (larval stage: Cysticercus cellulosae) in the brain and is classified as a tropical disease. Although it was previously uncommon in Europe, the number of cases has been increasing over the past decade. In this report, we present a case of a patient who was admitted with symptoms of raised intracranial pressure and biventricular hydrocephalus, without evidence of infection. Imaging studies revealed the presence of an atypical colloid cyst, which was subsequently removed using a neurosurgical endoscopic approach. An

An unusual presentation of colloid cyst--implications for lifestyle advice.

Colloid cysts are rare intracranial neoplasms which typically present with headaches. There is risk of neurological deterioration or death due to acute hydrocephalus. We report a case of colloid cyst presenting after a sudden acceleration/deceleration force from a theme park ride, highlighting the importance of lifestyle advice in these patients.

Hemorrhagic colloid cyst in a 9-year-old girl.

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are benign intracranial tumors that usually become symptomatic in adults, rather than in children. Rare hemorrhages in these cysts can cause acute obstructive hydrocephalus and sudden death. We report a novel pediatric case of hemorrhagic colloid cyst in a 9-year-old girl who presented with headaches, nausea, and had sudden deterioration of her mental status. The patient underwent emergent ventriculostomy and then craniotomy to resect the colloid cyst; she had an excellent recovery.

Intraventricular neurocysticercosis mimicking colloid cyst. Case report.

The authors recently encountered a unique case of anterior third ventricular neurocysticercosis in which the cyst exhibited an unusually high signal on T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. The lesion's signal intensity and location made differentiation from colloid cyst difficult. Intraventricular neurocysticercosis should be included in the differential diagnosis of a colloid cyst.

Rare occurrence of intracerebellar colloid cyst. Case report.

Colloid cysts are rare intracerebral lesions that are preferentially encountered within the third ventricle. There are only a few reports in which colloid cysts are described in other locations such as the fourth ventricle. A symptomatic intracerebellar colloid cyst in a 45-year-old woman is described. The patient presented with headache, gait disturbance, and nausea. Neuroradiological imaging revealed compression of the fourth ventricle, hydrocephalus, and an intracerebellar cystic lesion measuring 4 x 5 cm that had a small peripheral solid portion. The cyst was successfully removed via a par

Giant, lamellated colloid cyst: 'Russian-Doll' appearance.

Colloid cysts (CCs) are usually small, benign lesions located at the foramen of Monro. They usually grow to a size of 1-3 cms. We have described here a giant colloid cyst of size 6 x 5.2 x 4.4 cm with a unique radiological appearance of multiple concentric layers with different intensities which has not been described before. This unusual appearance is most probably due to the variation of hydration between the different layers with gradually decreasing concentration of protein from centre to periphery, which correlated well with intraoperative and histopathological findings.
