Isolation and characterization of resin acid degrading bacteria found in effluent from a bleached kraft pulp mill.

Thirteen resin acid degrading bacteria enriched on abietic or dehydroabietic acids were isolated from waste water from the aerated stabilization basin of a bleached kraft pulp mill. Standard biochemical tests were used to characterize each isolate. Each isolate was tested for its ability to degrade six abietane- and pimarane-type resin acids. Resin acid concentrations were determined by high pressure liquid chromatography and UV absorbance. Cluster analysis based on phenotypic characteristics identified two distinct clusters of degraders that differed in their ability to utilize carbohydrates

Application of a vital fluorescent staining method for simultaneous, near-real-time concentration monitoring of two bacterial strains in an Atlantic coastal plain aquifer in Oyster, Virginia.

Two differentially labeled bacterial strains were monitored in near-real time during two field-scale bacterial transport experiments in a shallow aquifer in July 2000 and July 2001. Comamonas sp. strain DA001 and Acidovorax sp. strain OY-107 were grown and labeled with the vital fluorescent stain TAMRA/SE (5 [and -6]-carboxytetramethylrhodamine, succinimidyl ester) or CFDA/SE (5 [and -6]-carboxyfluorescein diacetate, succinimidyl ester). Fluorescently labeled cells and a conservative bromide tracer were introduced into a suboxic superficial aquifer, followed by groundwater collection from down

Phenolic compounds fingerprints show distinct ligninolytic bacteria behaviours during technical lignins conversion.

Lignins, one of the main components of plant cell wall, and by-products of certain industries (paper and wood industries,…) are a renewable source of aromatic molecules. They can be degraded and transformed by microbial and enzymatic processes known to be respectful of the environment. Biological valorization of lignins remains challenging as biocatalysts are not sufficiently effective and efficient. Moreover, the chemical complexity and heterogeneity of lignins are a barrier to their use. Understanding the microbial behaviour on lignins by fingerprinting their efficient transformation could l

Nano-magnetite enhances dissimilated iron reduction to vivianite from sewage by structuring an enormous and compact electron transfer network.

Acting as both terminal and conductor of extracellular electron transfer (EET), little studies were focused on how nano-magnetite participated in the dissimilated iron reduction (DIR), especially the synthesis of vivianite, which was the typical DIR products from sewage. In this study, nano-magnetite was confirmed to enhance DIR of ferrihydrite and akaganeite for vivianite recovery from sewage. Nano-magnetite incorporation enriched Comamonas and Geobacter in sewage, and microbial protein content was increased by 123 % and 57 % in ferrihydrite and akaganeite batches, respectively. In Geobacter

Diversity of culture-independent bacteria and antimicrobial activity of culturable endophytic bacteria isolated from different Dendrobium stems.

Dendrobium is known for its pharmacological actions including anti-cancer effect, anti-fatigue effect, gastric ulcer protective effect, and so on. At present, only studies on endophytic fungi of Dendrobium affecting the metabolites of host plants have been reported, very little research has been done on endophytic bacteria. In this study, we have demonstrated the great diversity of endophytic bacteria in 6 Dendrobium samples from different origins and cultivars. According to the results of the culture-independent method, the endophytic bacterial community in Dendrobium stems showed obvious dif

A Two-Step SeCys Oxidation Pathway Bridging Soil Selenium Bioavailability and Rice Selenium Biofortification.

Addressing global selenium (Se) deficiency requires enhancing soil Se bioavailability, a process largely governed by microbial oxidation whose molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we systematically elucidated the SeCys2 oxidation mechanism of Comamonas testosteroni JL40 and its role in promoting rice Se biofortification. Strain JL40 employed a novel two-step oxidative pathway, converting SeCys2 sequentially to Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) and then to selenite (Se(IV)). SeoA-D were identified to catalyse Se oxidation by integrated proteomic, genetic and enzymatic analyses. Of these, SeoA and

Seasonal Restructuring of Microbial Communities and Resistomes in the Shitalakshya River, Bangladesh Revealed by Shotgun Metagenomics.

Urban rivers supplying drinking water face mounting pollution and AMR threats. We combined shotgun metagenomics with physicochemical analysis to investigate microbial community and resistome dynamics in Bangladesh's Shitalakshya River, a drinking water source under increasing pollution pressure, during early and peak dry seasons. Peak dry season water quality deteriorated markedly, characterized by hypoxia and elevated nutrient and organic carbon levels, which drove pronounced restructuring of the river microbiome. A distinct shift occurred from Myroides dominance toward a more diverse assembl

Unveiling the causal relationships between gut microbiota, circulating metabolic biomarkers, and benign prostate hyperplasia: A Mendelian randomization study.

The complex roles of gut microbiome (GM) dysbiosis and circulating metabolites in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) pathogenesis have been widely hypothesized but lacked causal evidence. Critically, no Mendelian randomization (MR) study has established whether GM and metabolites exert direct causal effects or act through mediating pathways in BPH development. Using genome-wide association studies data, we conducted comprehensive 2-sample and mediation MR analyses. Causal effects were estimated via inverse-variance weighted methods with sensitivity analyses. Six bacterial phyla/genera showed s

Dual role of phenol Co-contamination in trichloroethylene detoxification in EK-BIO systems: Microbial inhibition versus stimulated aerobic cometabolism.

Phenol often co-occurs with trichloroethylene (TCE) and can inhibit the activity of organohalide-respiring bacteria, posing challenges for in-situ bioremediation. This study evaluated one-dimensional columns operated under electrokinetic-enhanced bioremediation (EK-BIO) for simultaneous TCE detoxification with phenol co-amendment at 1 mM (replenished every 14 days). EK-BIO achieved effective TCE removal despite 6 injection cycles (2100 μmol total), with pore water concentrations decreasing from 500 μM to 79.03 μM at day 28, and 5.86 μM by day 84. Phenol-free batch experiments exhibited earlier

New insights into the typical nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound-quinoline degradation and detoxification by microbial consortium: Integrated pathways, meta-transcriptomic analysis and toxicological evaluation.

As the primary source of COD in industrial wastewater, quinoline has aroused increasing attention because of its potential teratogenic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects in the environment. The activated sludge isolate quinoline-degrading microbial consortium (QDMC) efficiently metabolizes quinoline. However, the molecular underpinnings of the degradation mechanism of quinoline by QDMC have not been elucidated. High-throughput sequencing revealed that the dominant genera included Diaphorobacter, Bacteroidia, Moheibacter and Comamonas. Furthermore, a positive strong correlation was observed b

Antibiotic resistance gene control coupled with enhanced denitrification in a pilot-scale biochar-based biofiltration amended with goethite.

Biofiltration systems can synergistically remove multiple pollutants from paddy field drainage, including nutrients and emerging contaminants such as antibiotic residues. However, their application is often limited by insufficient denitrification, which can also create nitrosative stress that induce horizontal transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) among denitrifying bacteria, thereby posing potential secondary environmental risks. In this study, a pilot-scale innovative biochar-based biofiltration (IBBF) system amended with goethite was developed and operated over two rice-growing cyc

Efficient removal of enrofloxacin in swine wastewater using eukaryotic-bacterial symbiotic membraneless bioelectrochemical system.

A eukaryotic-bacterial symbiotic membraneless bioelectrochemical system (EBES) reactor with eukaryotic-bacteria symbiotic cathode was developed to treat swine wastewater containing enrofloxacin (ENR), which had high performance at ENR tolerance and operational stability. With ENR concentrations shifting from 2 to 50 mg/L, the removal efficiencies of ENR, chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH4+-N always were higher than 95 %, and the maximum power output (≥343 mW/m3) could be achieved. At 20 mg/L ENR, the removal efficiencies of ENR, COD and NH4+-N respectively reached to 99.4 ± 0.1 %, 98.5 % ± 0

Trichloroethylene detoxification in low-permeability soil via electrokinetic-enhanced bioremediation technology: Long-term feasibility and spatial-temporal patterns.

In situ remediation of low-permeability soils contaminated with trichloroethylene (TCE) is challenging due to limited mass transfer and low bioavailability in clay soils. The electrokinetic-enhanced bioremediation (EK-BIO) system offers a promising solution by combining electrokinetics with bioremediation to address these challenges. While previous studies have demonstrated microbial succession and TCE removal, the long-term performance of dechlorination and interactions between electrode reactions and anaerobic dechlorination remain unclear. This study constructed five one-dimensional columns

Detection of Microbial 16S rRNA Gene in the Serum of Patients With Gastric Cancer.

Aberrance in the blood bacterial microbiome has been identified and validated in several non-infectious diseases, including cancer. The occurrence and progression of gastric cancer has been found to be associated with alterations in the microbiome composition. However, the composition of the blood microbiome in patients with gastric cancer is not well-characterized. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a case-control study to investigate the microbiota compositions in the serum of patients with gastric cancer. The serum microbiome was investigated in patients with gastric cancer, atypical hyp
