Multi-Modal Laser Combination Therapy of Pigmented Scars: A Case Series of 30 Patients.

Background and Objectives: This study reports an adaptive experience of pigmented scar treatment management with different characteristics. It is complicated to define a single solution for all the patients. For this reason, we report a multi-modal approach combining CO2 laser, Q-switched lasers (QSL), and dye laser to adapt to every different patient clinical situation. Materials and Methods: Thirty patients were enrolled to treat pigmented scars. Twenty patients presented scars with exogenous pigment (such as traumatic tattoos) and 10 with endogenous pigment (hyperpigmentation cases). A comb

[A case of neuroendocrine carcinoma of the anal canal with multiple bone metastases successfully treated with combined modality therapy].

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the anal canal is a comparatively rare tumor with a poor prognosis. We report herein a case of NEC of the anal canal with multiple bone metastases that was successfully treated with combined therapy. A 63-year-old man was referred to our hospital with the chief complaint of anal and back pain. A tumor was found in the anal canal, and pathologic examination revealed it to be NEC( Ki-67 expression>50%); fluorodeoxyglucose( FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) showed multiple bone metastases. Initially, a l-leucovorin/5- fluorouraci(l

Acute and long-term effects on limb function of combined modality limb sparing therapy for extremity soft tissue sarcoma.

A retrospective review is presented on 145 patients who underwent limb-sparing surgery and radiation therapy (with or without adjuvant chemotherapy) for their primary soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities on protocol between 1975 and 1986. The focus on our analysis was the acute and long term toxicity of treatment on limb function. The most common acute complication was skin reaction, occurring in 52 patients (36%). Long term (occurring after more than 1 year following all treatment) treatment complications in the extremity were as follows: bone fracture = 6%; contracture = 20%; pain requiri

Patterns of relapse in locally advanced head and neck cancer patients who achieved complete remission after combined modality therapy.

Relapse patterns in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer who achieved complete remission were evaluated. After combined modality therapy with induction chemotherapy followed by surgery and/or radiotherapy, 71 of 103 patients were clinically free of disease. The 5-year recurrence rate was estimated at 51%, with a 39% local and 26% distant failure rate by 5 years. The factors significantly affecting the relapse patterns were: the site of the primary tumor (those with oral cavity lesions were more likely to fail locally, whereas hypopharynx patients had a higher risk of distant met

A Yeast Cell Wall Derived Hybrid Hydrogel with Photothermal and Immune Combined Modality Therapy for Enhanced Anti-Melanoma Efficacy.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of traditional treatment for melanoma is quite limited, especially for its recurrence. As the major components of yeast cell wall, chitin and β-glucan exhibit good immune activation effect and are promising candidates for adjuvant. Therefore, melanoma cell membrane (CM) and indocyanine green (ICG) was loaded in a chitin and β-glucan hybrid hydrogel to achieve an enhanced anti-melanoma therapy. METHODS: The novel hybrid hydrogel was prepared, and its physicochemical properties were examined. Its effect towards melanoma prevention and treatment was evaluated via a melan

Combined Modality Treatment With Brentuximab Vedotin and Radiation Therapy for Primary Cutaneous Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma: A Case Report.

Primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell lymphoma (pcALCL) is a rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Current frontline treatments for pcALCL include surgical resection, anthracycline-based chemotherapy, and/or radiation therapy (RT) depending on disease severity. While brentuximab vedotin (BV) has been used for refractory/relapsed cases, it recently received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for use in combination with chemotherapy for peripheral T-cell lymphomas. In this case report, we utilized a combined modality therapy of RT and BV for a limited stage aggressive pcALCL presentatio

Management of stage I-II diffuse aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the Waldeyer's ring: combined modality therapy versus radiotherapy alone.

Twenty five patients with stage I and II diffuse aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the Waldeyer's ring were reviewed. There were 19 patients with diffuse histiocytic, 4 diffuse lymphocytic poorly differentiated and 2 diffuse mixed lymphoma. Their median age was 51 years. There were 12 males and 13 females. Eight patients had stage I, and 17 had stage II disease. There was a significantly higher incidence of involvement of the left side of the Waldeyer's ring compared to the right (p = 0.0251). Fifteen patients received radiotherapy alone, and ten had radiotherapy and chemotherapy. The media

[A Case of More Than Five-Year Survival of Carcinoma Associated with Anal Fistula Effectively Treated by Combined Modality Therapy].

The patient was a 56-year-old man who presented with perianal pain and a perianal abscess. After admission, he underwent debridement and colostomy due to poor control of the perianal abscess. Following a biopsy of the resected specimens, he was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in the anorectal fistula. CT and MRI revealed that the tumor had invaded into the internal obturator muscle. Therefore, preoperative chemoradiotherapy and chemotherapy were given for locally advanced cancer. Subsequent to tumor shrinkage, we performed an abdominoperineal resection. Histopathologically, no cancer cells were

Combined modality therapy for thoracic and head and neck cancers: a review of updated literature based on a consensus meeting.

PURPOSE: Combined modality therapy is a mainstay option for thoracic malignancies and head and neck cancers. The integration of different strategies is based on the multidisciplinary approach of modern clinical oncology. Radiation oncologists have to be educated, trained, and updated to provide state-of-the-art care to cancer patients and thus educational meetings are crucial. METHODS: The Italian Association of Radiation Oncology Young Members Working Group (AIRO Giovani) organized its 8th national meeting, focused on combination therapy in lung, esophageal, and head and neck cancer (with a

Long-term follow-up of a prospective study of combined modality therapy for stage I-II indolent non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

PURPOSE: Standard therapy for patients with stage I-II indolent lymphoma has been involved-field radiation therapy (IF-XRT), which achieves 10-year disease-free survival in 40% to 50% of patients, with many of these patients cured. We investigated the potential for combined-modality therapy to increase the disease-free survival for such patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 102 eligible patients with stage I-II low grade lymphoma (International Working Formulation criteria) were enrolled from 1984 to 1992. Treatment comprised 10 cycles of risk-adapted chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, vinc

Effectiveness of combining plasma exchange and continuous hemodiafiltration (combined modality therapy in a parallel circuit) in the treatment of patients with acute hepatic failure.

Plasma exchange has gained widespread acceptance as an effective mode of blood purification in patients suffering from acute hepatic failure. However, it is still undetermined whether a single use of plasma exchange is capable of removing inflammatory cytokines completely or of preventing the development of citrate toxicity inherent with fresh frozen plasma. To clarify these issues we developed combined plasma exchange and continuous hemodiafiltration (CHDF) modality in which CHDF is performed in an opposite direction to plasma exchange. This study was designed to assess the effectiveness of c
