Impact of exposure frequency on disease burden of the common cold - A mathematical modeling perspective.

The common cold is a frequent disease in humans and can be caused by a multitude of different viruses. Despite its typically mild nature, the high prevalence of the common cold causes significant human suffering and economic costs. Oftentimes, strategies to reduce contacts are used in order to prevent infection. To better understand the dynamics of this ubiquitous ailment, we develop two novel mathematical models: the common cold ordinary differential equation (CC-ODE) model at the population level, and the common cold individual-based (CC-IB) model at the individual level. Our study aims to i

High prevalence of cough and common cold medication intoxications in the Czech paediatric population.

BACKGROUND: There has been much debate about the appropriateness of over-the-counter (OTC) cough and common cold medications (CCM). The aim of this nationwide study was to analyse the incidence of CCM intoxications in the Czech paediatric population from 2014 to 2023. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We performed a retrospective study on the incidence of CCM intoxications in the Czech paediatric population (ages 0-18 years) from 2014 to 2023. RESULTS: There were 7,056 cases of CCM intoxication in children, of which 6,406 resulted from unintentional intoxication. No lethal doses were reported, but there

The effectiveness of the nonsedating antihistamine loratadine plus pseudoephedrine in the symptomatic management of the common cold.

A multicentered trial compared the effects of the non-sedating antihistamine, loratadine, 5 mg plus pseudoephedrine 120 mg with a placebo on the signs and symptoms of the common cold. One hundred forty-two (142) subjects were treated with the loratadine/pseudoephedrine combination and 141 subjects were treated with placebo twice daily for five days. Evaluations by both subjects and physicians suggest that this antihistamine/decongestant combination is superior to placebo in relieving symptoms of the common cold. Specific differences were found in symptoms including nasal congestion, sneezing,

Common Cold - an Umbrella Term for Acute Infections of Nose, Throat, Larynx and Bronchi.

Acute respiratory tract infections, i. e. rhinitis, sinusitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, belong to the most common medical conditions with a high economic burden. Nonetheless, there is little agreement concerning their differential diagnosis. This paper will discuss to what extent different anatomical sites of acute respiratory tract infections can be uniquely identified or whether the overlap and consecutive development in signs and symptoms renders these distinctions meaningless.Acute respiratory tract infections are variable but definition of diagnostic categories based on the ana

Bacterial pathogens of acute sinusitis in the osteomeatal complex during common colds and wellness.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic bacteria have been cultured from the osteomeatal complex (OMC) in one-third of adults with apparent acute bacterial sinusitis; however, it is not known whether bacteria are present in the OMC during uncomplicated viral colds in adults. METHODS: Adult volunteers were recruited for a study during wellness and at the time of acute common cold. Swab cultures were obtained from the OMC and from the nasopharynx by 2 routes (through the nose and through the mouth). Swab eluates were inoculated on selective agars to detect S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae, and M. catarrhalis. RESU

Zinc gluconate lozenges for treating the common cold in children: a randomized controlled trial.

CONTEXT: The common cold is one of the most frequently occurring illnesses and is responsible for substantial morbidity and economic loss. Biochemical evidence suggests that zinc may be an effective treatment, and zinc gluconate glycine (ZGG) lozenges have been shown to reduce the duration of cold symptoms in adults. OBJECTIVE: To determine the efficacy of ZGG treatment of colds in children and adolescents. DESIGN: A randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled study. SETTING: Two suburban school districts in Cleveland, Ohio. PATIENTS: A total of 249 students in grades 1 through 12 were e

Exposure to P. falciparum and common cold viruses shape vaccine responses in early life.

Vaccine immunogenicity is consistently lower in low-income countries than in high-income settings, yet the factors driving this disparity remain incompletely understood. Using multiplexed electrochemiluminescence serology, we measured IgG and IgA responses to Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) vaccines and common childhood viral infections in 89 Ugandan infants. We integrated detailed parasitological surveillance and maternal clinical data to examine how P. falciparum infection history, concurrent parasitemia, maternal gravidity, and early-life viral exposures shaped serological profiles.

Comparative pharmacokinetic studies of Ephedra herba in common cold and nephrotic syndrome rat models.

Ephedra herba is a conventional Chinese medicine to treat cold, fever, asthma, edema, and lung diseases in the clinic. At present, most pharmacokinetic studies focus on the pharmacokinetic process of alkaloids in normal animals. However, the non-alkaloid components are also active. In addition, the pharmacokinetic studies under pathological state make more sense for clarifying the material basis of efficacy. In this study, a sensitive and rapid ultra-high-performance-tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and applied to determine nine bioactive components (ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, me

Testing of cough reflex sensitivity in children suffering from allergic rhinitis and common cold.

Cough associated with upper respiratory tract disorders is a common and troublesome problem in children and little is known about the etiology of this type of cough. This study examined the capsaicin cough sensitivity (CS) in children suffering from allergic rhinitis (AR) and upper respiratory tract infection (URI), comparing it with that in healthy children taken as controls (C). CS to capsaicin, spirometry, skin prick tests, and nose-throat examination were performed in 61 children grouped by the diagnosis of AR, URI, and C. The results, in order of C vs. AR vs. URI, expressed as a geometric

Genetic characterization of coronaviruses causing common cold symptoms based on micro-targeted capture sequencing.

A novel micro-targeted capture sequencing method was developed for four coronaviruses that cause common cold symptoms, and its sensitivity and clinical performance were assessed using 14 pharyngeal swab samples. This technique achieved 100% genomic coverage for samples with a cycle threshold (Ct) value of 32 or lower. The genotypes of the clinical isolates were determined by phylogenetic analysis, and unique mutations were identified in the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the spike protein. Additional N-glycosylation sites were found in some of the isolates. This method offers a sensitive and

Common cold embecovirus imprinting primes broadly neutralizing antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 S2.

The S2 subunit of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) spike is highly conserved across coronavirus strains and therefore is a potential pan-coronavirus vaccine target. However, antibodies targeting this region are typically non-neutralizing. We report herein that S2-targeting antibodies from patients who recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection bound only closely related sarbecovirus subgenus strains and, like most known S2 antibodies, none of these were neutralizing. In contrast, first-exposure, severe acutely infected COVID-19 patients predominantly induced back-boost

Viral aetiology of common colds of outpatient children at primary care level and the use of antibiotics.

Although antibiotics are ineffective against viral respiratory infections, studies have shown high rates of prescriptions worldwide. We conducted a study in Brazil to determine the viral aetiologies of common colds in children and to describe the use of antibiotics for these patients. Children up to 12 years with common colds were enrolled from March 2008-February 2009 at a primary care level facility and followed by regular telephone calls and medical consultations. A nasopharyngeal wash was obtained at enrollment and studied by direct fluorescence assay and polymerase chain reaction for nine

Heterogeneity in the prognosis of major depression: from the common cold to a highly debilitating and recurrent illness.

Two different and seemingly competing views on the diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) exist. The first is that the diagnosis conflates adaptive sadness reactions with pathological states of depressed mood and that MDD is overdiagnosed and overtreated. The second is that MDD is an underdiagnosed and undertreated disorder, and one that is best characterised by a severe, chronic, recurrent or treatment-resistant course. Existing research suggests that both views are valid and merit being integrated. Anywhere from 30 to 50% of individuals will meet criteria for MDD at some point in their

Antibiotics and upper respiratory infection: do some folks think there is a cure for the common cold.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic treatment is the only recommended therapy for the uncomplicated "common cold." The purpose of this study was to examine the use of antibiotics and other prescription medications for the common cold in a Medicaid population seen in ambulatory care settings. METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of Kentucky Medicaid claims from July 1, 1993, through June 30, 1994, was analyzed. Subjects were patients seen in an ambulatory setting for the common cold, defined as acute nasopharyngitis. A total of 1439 individuals were seen for 2171 separate outpatient and emergency department

A double-blind controlled evaluation of the nasal decongestant effect of Day Nurse in the common cold.

A rhinomanometric technique was used to evaluate the nasal decongestant effect of a single dose of Day Nurse over a 4-hour post-dosing period in human volunteers suffering from nasal congestion due to a common cold. A significant improvement in nasal congestion was obtained at the 1 hour, 2 hour, 3 hour and 4 hour post-dosing interval, from initial values compared to a placebo group. The study therefore demonstrated by an objective technique that Day Nurse provides relief of nasal congestion and related symptoms in cold sufferers.
