No evidence of influenza A virus infection in marine mammals stranded in Basque Country coast (Northern Spain) in the context of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b expansion.

Influenza A infection is frequently detected in marine mammals causing mortality events of different magnitude. In recent years, the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus (clade 2.3.4.4b) has been rapidly expanding and infecting a new variety of avian and mammalian species, including marine mammals. Given this new epidemiological context, the objective of this work was to evaluate the influenza A virus infection of marine mammals stranded on the Basque Country coast. 38 marine mammals were studied (2012-2024), most of them (79%) being dolphins (striped dolphin, common dolphin, an

Immunofluorescence evidence of melanotrophs in the pituitary of four odontocete species. An immunohistochemical study and a critical review of the literature.

Cetaceans share peculiar features of their pituitary glands, with a complete separation of pars distalis and pars nervosa by a dural septum and the absence of an intermediate lobe and cleft. In most mammals the pars intermedia is the main source of circulating α-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH), derived from a large precursor called proopiomelanocortin (POMC), which also generates adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) in the adenohypophysis. The lack of an intermediate lobe in cetaceans led us to investigate whether their glands are able to produce α-MSH, and if this hormone is secreted by

Pathological Findings in White-Beaked Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) and Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus acutus) From the South-Eastern North Sea.

In the North Sea, white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) occur regularly and are the second most common cetacean in the area, while their close relative, the Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), prefers the deeper waters of the northern North Sea and adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Though strandings of both species have occurred regularly in the past three decades, they have decreased in the southern North Sea during the last years. Studies describing necropsy findings in stranded Lagenorhynchus spp. are, to date, still scarce, while information gained through post-mortem

Marine fish imported from Argentina as source of human diphyllobothriosis in Europe? Ecological evidence from dolphins.

Diphyllobothriosis caused by the Pacific broad tapeworm Adenocephalus pacificus (syn. Diphyllobothrium pacificum) is an emerging parasitic disease reported also from non-endemic areas, including Europe (Spain). The origin of these human cases is unknown but should be related to fresh marine fish imported from endemic areas. In this study, we molecularly confirmed common dolphins Delphinus delphis off Argentina as euparatenic transit hosts of A. pacificus. Preliminary analysis of their stomach content, together with data from previous studies from the Southwest Atlantic, showed that common dolp

Diagnosis and successful treatment of subacute erysipelas in a captive dolphin.

Ersipelas, a common disease of swine, is caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae. The organism was isolated in a blood culture taken from an infected captive dolphin. The dolphin showed typical subacute symptoms of square- and diamond-shaped skin lesions as seen in swine. It was surmised, in retrospect, that the disease was secondary to a primary pneumonia. The symptoms, clinical pathology and other special examinations, treatment and response are discussed.

Anisakis spp. in toothed and baleen whales from Japanese waters with notes on their potential role as biological tags.

In this study, Anisakis nematodes isolated from toothed and baleen whales from localities around Japan were molecularly (PCR-RFLP) identified. In Wakayama, common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) were infected with A. simplex sensu stricto (s.s.), A. typica and A. pegreffii, while A. typica was the only species found in pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) and striped dolphin (S. coeruleoalba). Offshore common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) and sei whales (B. borealis) were almost exclusively infected with A. simplex s.s.. However, in common minke whales from two

Novel adenovirus detected in captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) suffering from self-limiting gastroenteritis.

BACKGROUND: Adenoviruses are common pathogens in vertebrates, including humans. In marine mammals, adenovirus has been associated with fatal hepatitis in sea lions. However, only in rare cases have adenoviruses been detected in cetaceans, where no clear correlation was found between presence of the virus and disease status. CASE PRESENTATION: A novel adenovirus was identified in four captive bottlenose dolphins with self-limiting gastroenteritis. Viral detection and identification were achieved by: PCR-amplification from fecal samples; sequencing of partial adenovirus polymerase (pol) and hex

Development of an indirect immunofluorescence technique for the evaluation of generated antibody titers against Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae in captive bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is the causative agent of erysipelas, a disease of many mammalian and avian species, mainly swine and turkeys. In cetaceans, erysipelas is considered to be the most common infection in juvenile individuals, which have not been vaccinated. Moreover, the disease manifest in both forms, the dermatologic and the acute septicemic forms, has been reported in various species of dolphins and whales. It is difficult to diagnose erysipelas by currently available approaches. Moreover, it is mainly based on culture methods and also PCR methods, which are currently being develo

Molecular Characterization of Herpesviral Encephalitis in Cetaceans: Correlation with Histopathological and Immunohistochemical Findings.

Herpesviruses are causative agents of meningitis and encephalitis in cetaceans, which are among the main leading known natural causes of death in these species. Brain samples from 103 stranded cetaceans were retrospectively screened for the presence of herpesvirus DNA in the brain. Molecular detection of Cetacean Morbillivirus was performed in HV positive brain cases. Histopathologic evaluation of brain samples included the presence or absence of the following findings (n = 7): meningitis, perivascular cuffings, microgliosis, intranuclear inclusion bodies, malacia, neuronal necrosis and neurop

Spatial variation in the accumulation of POPs and mercury in bottlenose dolphins of the Lower Florida Keys and the coastal Everglades (South Florida).

The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is an upper trophic level predator and the most common cetacean species found in nearshore waters of southern Florida, including the Lower Florida Keys (LFK) and the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE). The objective of this study was to assess contamination levels of total mercury (T-Hg) in skin and persistent organic pollutants (PCBs, PBDEs, DDXs, HCHs, HCB, Σ PCDD/Fs and Σ DL-PCBs) in blubber samples of bottlenose dolphins from LFK (n = 27) and FCE (n = 24). PCBs were the major class of compounds found in bottlenose dolphin blubber and were higher in

Quantifying differences in dolphin hearing thresholds obtained with behavioral and auditory evoked potential methods.

Different methods of producing the auditory steady state response (ASSR) are used to test dolphin hearing, but each method affects the resulting ASSR threshold. Since behavioral thresholds are often desired, this study, using common ASSR methods, compared differences between ASSR and behavioral hearing thresholds in five dolphins. Sinusoidal amplitude modulated (SAM) tones or tone pip trains were presented to the dolphins through a contact transducer while they were in air or partially submerged under water. Underwater behavioral hearing thresholds were obtained with pure tone stimuli on the s

Placental and breastmilk transfer of voriconazole to offspring from pregnant and lactating bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Fungal pneumonia is a common disease in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), including pregnant and lactating ones. Voriconazole (VRCZ) is commonly used to treat respiratory fungal infections in this species; however, it is unknown whether VRCZ is transferred via the placenta and breastmilk and whether its usage is safe in pregnant and lactating dolphins. We measured VRCZ concentrations in breastmilk and dams', umbilical cord, and calves' plasma samples from four dam-calf dolphin pairs in the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium, Japan, treated with or without VRCZ. Three pregnant and/or lactat

Investigating the Predation Risk of Coastal Dolphins via the Presence of Shark Bite Scars Across Southeast Queensland, Australia.

Predation and its risk influence the ecology and evolution of both predator and prey species. Despite this, predatory attempts of large apex sharks on cetaceans often remain unobserved, constraining empirical assessments of their frequency and ecological significance. Shark bite scars can be used as an indirect measure to quantify predation risk on dolphins and may reveal species-specific and spatial patterns of predator-prey interactions. Here, we analysed photographs of coastal dolphins in southeast Queensland, Australia to compare predation risk between multiple dolphin species across diffe

Brucella ceti sequence type 23, 26, and 27 infections in North American cetaceans.

Brucella ceti infection is associated with a variety of disease outcomes in cetaceans globally. Multiple genotypes of B. ceti have been identified. This retrospective aimed to determine if specific lesions were associated with different B. ceti DNA sequence types (STs). Characterization of ST was performed on 163 samples from 88 free-ranging cetaceans, including common bottlenose dolphin Tursiops truncatus (T.t.; n = 73), common short-beaked dolphin Delphinus delphis (D.d.; n = 7), striped dolphin Stenella coeruleoalba (n = 3), Pacific white-sided dolphin Lagenorhynchus obliquidens (n = 2), sp

Toxoplasma gondii in cetaceans of Brazil: a histopathological and immunohistochemical survey.

Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. In cetaceans, T. gondii infection is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Despite the worldwide range and broad cetacean host record of T. gondii infection, there is limited information on toxoplasmosis in cetaceans from the Southern hemisphere. We investigated the occurrence of T. gondii by histopathology and immunohistochemistry in tissue samples of 185 animals comprising 20 different cetacean species from Brazil. Three out of 185 (1.6%) animals presented T. gondii-associated lesions: a captive killer

Prevalence and pathology of lungworm infection in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus from southwest Florida.

Parasitism of the respiratory system is a relatively common finding in stranded cetaceans; however, no systematic investigations regarding the severity, distribution, and clinical consequences of these infections in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus have been conducted previously. The present study determined the prevalence of lungworm infections in dead stranded (n=22) and live bottlenose dolphins (n=44) from southwestern Florida, USA, during the period from 2003 to 2005. Dead stranded bottlenose dolphins were necropsied and lungs were examined visually, by palpation, and histologically

Brucella infection in rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) with severe orchitis stranded on the Pacific coast of Japan.

In the western North Pacific, prominent granulomatous testes have been detected in many Brucella-infected common minke whales (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), but there have been no reports in toothed cetaceans. We found severe orchitis with granulomatous lesions in a rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis) stranded on the Pacific coast of Japan in 2011. Histopathological examination revealed leukocyte infiltration of the lesions. DNA from the lesion was analyzed by PCR and it showed molecular biological similarities with those of Brucella-infected common minke whales and Brucella ceti of seque

First report of three different parasite species in two dolphin species stranded on the coast of Portugal.

Understanding the dynamics of the interaction of marine parasites with their hosts, especially in terms of diversity, distribution and pathogenicity can be of great importance in a Global Change era. Monitoring the parasite diversity of marine mammals holds not only ecological importance but also can be of significance for public health. However, there is a scarcity of parasitological research on cetaceans in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, namely in Portugal. Here we explore the morphology, diversity and pathogenicity of parasites in two different cetaceans, Delphinus delphis (common dolphin) and
