[Communication disorders in the practice of Department of Phoniatrics ad Audiology in Poznań].

The relations between audiology and phoniatrics which formed the base for the present name of Poznań Department of Phoniatrics and Audiology are presented. It is specific for this Department to include the olfacto-gustometry into clinical evaluation of sensory organs. The periodic "Informacje Foniatryczne" which were published in 1966-1972 in our Department were exception in the history of Polish phoniatrics. Childhood autism: deficits of communication and symbolic development. I. Distinctions from language disorders.

The present paper reviews, outlines, and explores the literature concerned with the speech-language disorder of childhood autism. The problems of communication of the autistic child are compared and contrasted with those of children with a variety of other language disorders (e.g. receptive developmental dysphasia). Based upon the review of normal preverbal communicatory and symbolic development, it is concluded that childhood autism involves a pervasive language disorder encompassing communication in general, as well as certain symbolic-representational abilities necessary for language. Effects of alternative communication on the communicative effectiveness of an individual with a progressive language disorder.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of two different modes of communication on the communicative output of an individual who is no longer able to communicate verbally, presenting with a primary progressive aphasia and apraxia of speech. The two treatment approaches included training the patient with a text-to-speech alternative communication device and with American sign language. An alternating treatment design was used to compare two communicative approaches (an alternative communication device and American sign language) on the subject's communicative effectiveness. Communication Paradoxes in Borderline Personality Disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is a disorder marked by a pattern of contradictory, paradoxical, and self-defeating behavior, yet the communication methods of patients with the condition have remained largely unexamined since the disorder was first described nearly a century ago. This article applies communication theory to the study of borderline personality disorder in an attempt to understand patients' characteristically paradoxical modes of relating. Three types of double-bind communications are examined-the "be spontaneous" paradox, the covert contract, and the Kafka trap. The potential p

Assessment and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in the Community.

Bipolar disorder is a recurrent, heterogeneous condition that often begins in adolescence and typically requires lifelong, multimodal management. Advances in evidence-based assessment (EBA) offer structured frameworks for prediction, prescription, and progress monitoring, and pharmacological and psychosocial interventions supported by recent reviews and the Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments (CANMAT)/International Society for Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) guidelines provide effective options across phases of illness. Despite these advances, the impact of evidence-based approaches rema

Communicative misalignment in Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Communication deficits are a defining feature of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), manifest during social interactions. Previous studies investigating communicative deficits have largely focused on the perceptual biases, social motivation, cognitive flexibility, or mentalizing abilities of isolated individuals. By embedding autistic individuals in live non-verbal interactions, we characterized a novel cause for their communication deficits. Adults with ASD matched neurotypical individuals in their ability and propensity to generate and modify intelligible behaviors for a communicative partner. H

The influence of a therapeutic community on psychiatric disorder.

Forty-eight residents of a therapeutic community took part in a prospective study aimed at assessing overall outcome and which components of the program were most helpful. All subjects had a DSM-III-R axis II diagnosis, usually borderline personality disorder (N = 34). As well, subjects had a mean of 1.3 axis I diagnoses, underlining the severity of their psychiatric disorders. Significant symptom reduction on the Brief Symptom Inventory occurred at discharge after a mean stay of 64 days, with further significant falls at three month follow-up. These changes were paralleled in the Hostility an

DSM-III personality disorders in the community.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to estimate the prevalence and investigate the comorbidity and potential consequences of DSM-III personality disorders in the community. METHOD: A total of 810 adults were examined in the second stage of the Eastern Baltimore Mental Health Survey in 1981, part of the National Institute of Mental Health Epidemiologic Catchment Area program. The subjects were directly examined by psychiatrists using a semi-structured method that allowed diagnosis of all DSM-III personality disorders as well as other DSM-III psychiatric disorders. RESULTS: The prevalence o

Psychiatric disorders in a community sample of adolescents.

The prevalence of psychiatric disorders diagnosed according to DSM-III in adolescents in the general population is not known. The authors address this issue in a community sample of 150 adolescents 14-16 years of age. Structured interviews as well as other instruments were used to collect data. Twenty-eight (18.7%) of the 150 adolescents were identified as having a psychiatric disorder. These 28 adolescents viewed their parents as less caring, had lower self-esteem, and resolved their conflicts through verbal aggression and physical violence more often than did the adolescents who did not have

Syndromes, communicative disorders, and black children.

Birth defects increase the risk of speech, language, and hearing disorders in childhood. The prevalence of particular congenital anomalies varies from one racial and ethnic group to another. Some conditions such as the hemoglobinopathies, polydactyly, and external ear malformations are more common among black people. Other birth defects are rarer among black children, notably cleft lip and palate, neural tube defects, and phenylketonuria. The more common defects of Down's syndrome, neurofibromatosis, and cerebral palsy appear to occur in equal frequency in black and white Americans.Speech-lang

A Slip Between the Brain and the Lip: Working Memory and Cognitive-Communication Disorders.

The relationship between working memory and speech has been a topic of intense research interest and investigation for many years. Memory studies have found that the active processing of working memory is required for language comprehension and speech production. Though there are studies that discuss the capacity of working memory, the processing of verbal stimuli into verbal memory remains unclear. Therefore, it is essential to understand the functioning of the working memory and how it processes verbal information. As working memory is intricately linked with communication, any deficits in w

Music Improves Social and Participation Outcomes for Individuals With Communication Disorders: A Systematic Review.

There is increasing interest in exploring the benefits of music in rehabilitation settings. In the field of speech-language pathology, an ultimate goal for individuals with communication disorders is to foster participation across multiple contexts. The goal of this systematic review was to explore social and participation outcomes for individuals with communication disorders who received arts-based interventions. A systematic search of the literature yielded 86 studies, which were coded and summarized in terms of participants, arts-based intervention, social and participation variables, outco

Communication and Language Skills of Autistic Spectrum Disorders in Children and Their Parents' Emotions.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability, which is a biologically based neurodevelopmental disorder that affects a child's social interaction and communication skills. Core deficits are identified in two domains: social communication/interaction and restrictive, repetitive patterns of behavior. Children and youth with ASD have service needs in behavioral, educational, health, leisure, family support, and other areas. Autism is a set of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions, characterized by inability to acquire social skills, repetitive behaviors and failu
