Packing media regulate nitric oxide removal performance by driving community assembly and biofilm evolution in biotrickling filters.

Packing media are essential for optimizing biotrickling filter (BTF) design and pollutant removal efficiency, yet how their integrated physicochemical properties affect the performance by regulating community assembly and biofilm evolution remains unclear. This study compared two parallel BTFs packed with activated carbon (AC) granules (BTFAC) and polyurethane (PU) sponge (BTFPU) for nitric oxide (NO) removal, and tested their resilience to starvation. BTFPU achieved significantly higher and more stable NO removal than BTFAC during both pre-starvation (99% ± 1% over 94% ± 5%) and post-starvati

HPVoice: a single-blind three-arm RCT on social media communication strategies among adolescents in Tuscany, Italy.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is the first cancer potentially eliminable through widespread HPV vaccination. In Italy, despite free access, vaccine coverage among adolescents remains low. Psychological factors such as information avoidance (IA), the tendency to ignore threatening information, can influence vaccine decisions and contribute to vaccine hesitancy (VH). While social media offers new avenues for health communication, their effectiveness in reducing VH is uncertain. This study investigates the impact of Instagram-based communication strategies on adolescents' HPV knowledge and VH. M

Developing community-specific recommendations for first-line treatment of acute otitis media: is high-dose amoxicillin necessary?

OBJECTIVES: National recommendations are to use high-dose amoxicillin (80-90 mg/kg per day) to treat uncomplicated acute otitis media (AOM) in children who are at high risk for infection with nonsusceptible Streptococcus pneumoniae (NSSP). However, high-dose treatment may not be necessary if the local prevalence of NSSP is low. The objective of this study was to estimate the local prevalence of NSSP in children with acute upper respiratory illnesses and to develop community-specific recommendations for first-line empiric treatment of AOM. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional prevalence stu

Interactive Media Engagement Predicts Posttraumatic Distress After Community Trauma: A National Repeated Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: Media engagement is an important pathway for indirect exposure to community trauma, but little is known about how interactive platforms and meaning-making relate to posttraumatic psychological outcomes. This study examined whether different types of media usage, particularly interactive online engagement, predict acute and subacute posttraumatic distress following a communitylevel traumatic event. METHODS: A two-wave nationwide repeated cross-sectional survey was conducted 2 weeks (n=1,703) and 2 months (n=2,220) post-incident, using stratified quota sampling. Depressive, anxiety,

Natural language processing reveals network structure of pain communication in social media using discrete mathematical analysis.

Pain-related discussions on social media provide valuable insights into how people naturally express and communicate their pain experiences. However, the network structure of these discussions remains poorly understood. This study analyzed 57,000 Reddit comments from the GoEmotions dataset (2005-2019) using natural language processing and network analysis techniques grounded in discrete mathematical principles. The constructed network, comprising 5,630 nodes and 86,972 edges, revealed complex patterns of pain-related language use. The network exhibited a sparse overall density (0.0055) but a h

Understanding Australian Government Risk Communication Early in the COVID-19 Pandemic: Sociodemographics, Risk Attitudes and Media Consumption.

Effective risk communication is essential for government and health authorities to effectively manage public health during the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Understanding the factors that influence people's perceptions of crisis-related risk messages is critical to identify gaps and inequalities in population risk communication. Using a longitudinal survey of a representative adult sample, we examined risk communication about COVID-19 during April-June 2020 in Australia across sociodemographic groups especially the at-risk groups, accounting for and exploring the effects of risk att

Israeli news media coverage of COVID-19 and use of cannabis and tobacco: A case study of inconsistent risk communication.

BACKGROUND: There is continued scientific debate regarding the link between risk of COVID-19 infection and increased disease severity and tobacco and cannabis use. The way this topic is presented in news media coverage may influence public attitudes and behavior and is thus an important topic of investigation. This study examines (1) the extent to which Israeli news media reported a positive (i.e., protective/therapeutic), negative (i.e., harmful), or inconclusive association between three types of substance use (tobacco, medical cannabis, recreational cannabis) and risk of COVID-19 infection

Computer-Mediated Communication in Adults With and Without Moderate-to-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: Survey of Social Media Use.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI) report fewer social contacts, less social participation, and more social isolation than noninjured peers. Cognitive-communication disabilities may prevent individuals with TBI from accessing the opportunities for social connection afforded by computer-mediated communication, as individuals with TBI report lower overall usage of social media than noninjured peers and substantial challenges with accessibility and usability. Although adaptations for individuals with motor and sensory impairments exist to support social media u

Dichotic listening is associated with phonological awareness in Australian aboriginal children with otitis media: A remote community-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Recent literature has highlighted a link between hearing loss as a result of otitis media in the early years of life and impacted binaural processing skills in later childhood. Such findings are of particular relevance to Indigenous Australian children, who tend to experience otitis media earlier in life and for longer periods than their non-Indigenous counterparts. There is also growing interest in the effects of reduced auditory processing ability on a child's early learning of language and, specifically, on phonological awareness that contributes to word reading skills. The aim o

Factors associated with carotid Intima media thickness and carotid plaque score in community-dwelling and non-diabetic individuals.

BACKGROUND: The carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and carotid plaque score (cPS) are respective markers of early and late stage subclinical atherosclerosis. Relationships between some laboratory parameters and subclinical atherosclerosis are not yet clear in community dwelling individuals and non-diabetic subjects, so we try to elucidate these relationships and find a model to predict early and late stage subclinical atherosclerosis. METHODS: We examined relationships of the cIMT and cPS with different laboratory and demographic data of 331 subjects from a community-based prospective coho

Carotid Intima-Media Thickness and Silent Brain Infarctions in a Biracial Cohort: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study.

BACKGROUND: Both hypertensive and atherosclerotic processes contribute to common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT). Elevated CCA-IMT may be indicative of subclinical cerebrovascular disease; however, its role in the absence of concomitant carotid artery plaque is uncertain, and few studies have examined associations in Black populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: At cohort visit 3 (1993-1995) a subset of stroke-free participants (641 Blacks and 702 Whites, mean age 63) from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study was imaged by brain MRI and carotid ultrasound. Carotid intima-media thickness and cognitive function in a middle-aged and older adult community: a cross-sectional study.

The relationship between atherosclerosis and cognitive function is less well studied in Chinese populations. In addition, the results among middle-aged adults have been mixed. We aimed to investigate the association of atherosclerosis measured by carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults from a Chinese community. Participants in the Asymptomatic Polyvascular Abnormalities in Community study (APAC) who had completed the CIMT detection and cognitive function measurements in 2012/2013 were included. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini-

Upper respiratory tract microbial communities, acute otitis media pathogens, and antibiotic use in healthy and sick children.

The composition of the upper respiratory tract microbial community may influence the risk for colonization by the acute otitis media (AOM) pathogens Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, and Moraxella catarrhalis. We used culture-independent methods to describe upper respiratory tract microbial communities in healthy children and children with upper respiratory tract infection with and without concurrent AOM. Nasal swabs and data were collected in a cross-sectional study of 240 children between 6 months and 3 years of age. Swabs were cultured for S. pneumoniae, and real-time PCR wa
