Evaluation of a pharmacist-led penicillin allergy testing service in a community health system.

BACKGROUND: Roughly 10% of the U.S. population has a documented penicillin (PCN) allergy. Among these individuals, over 95% are able to tolerate PCNs. The inability to use PCNs can result in suboptimal outcomes. In August 2019, Lawrence Memorial Hospital Health System implemented a pharmacist-led PCN allergy testing service to assist with delabeling PCN allergies and increase access to this class of antibiotics. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to describe the number of patients who underwent PCN allergy testing and were delabeled from PCN allergy. A secondary objective was to report the

Aunting as a Call to Public Intellectualism: The Roles of (In)Visibility in Health Communication Research and Service.

In this essay, the author identifies the theme of (in)visibility permeating her research on fathers of children with a rare genetic condition, Sturge-Weber syndrome. The tension between physical visibility of the condition and lack of awareness is explored, alongside issues of (in)visibility in coping and support-seeking strategies of fathers. Finally, the author examines her own experiences in the research process through the lens of (in)visibility, in both managing her own emotions and exploring her roles as a researcher, an aunt, and a public intellectual.

Clinical consultations in an aboriginal community-controlled health service: a comparison with general practice.

Clinical consultation at Danila Dilba, an Aboriginal community-controlled health service in Darwin, were compared with consultations in Australian general practice. We described 583 consultations, using a questionnaire based on the International Classification of Primary Care. The methods were similar to those of the Australian Morbidity and Treatment Survey (AMTS) of consultations in Australian general practice undertaken by the University of Sydney Family Medicine Research Unit. Compared with Australian general practice consultations, consultations with Danila Dilba were more complex: more y

Parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive health and the utilization of adolescent-friendly health services in Kailali, Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents are vulnerable to various sexual and reproductive health (SRH) problems such as unintended pregnancy, HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and unsafe abortion. Adolescent-friendly health services offer SRH services such as SRH counseling, contraceptive services, STI and HIV services, and abortion-related services, which may help prevent these risks. Parent-adolescent communication about SRH prevents adolescents from adopting unhealthy SRH practices. However, its association with the utilization of SRH services is less known. Therefore, this study examine

Multiple risk factors and the likelihood of patient-physician communication and health maintenance services in medicare health plans.

This study examined both individual and combined effects of race, education, and health-based risk factors on health maintenance services among Medicare plan members. Data were from 110 238 elderly completing the 2006 Medicare Health Outcomes Survey. Receipt of recommended patient-physician communication and interventions for urinary incontinence, physical activity, falls, and osteoporosis was modeled as a function of risk factors. Low education decreased the odds of receiving services; poor health increased odds. Race had little effect. Evidence suggested moderation among competing effects. W

COVID-19 Modifications in Public Home- and Community-Based Services for Children with Mental Health Needs.

Eleven states offer 1915(c) Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) Medicaid waivers to organize and fund programs that provide in-home and community support services to address the unique needs of children and youth with complex mental health concerns and their families. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic-imposed restrictions on community movement and school engagement were enacted, these children and youth lost in-person access to needed supports through school-based programs and professional community providers. The well documented mental health impacts of the pandemic on children and youth

Community pharmacists' provision of sexual and reproductive health services: A cross-sectional study in Alberta, Canada.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, pharmacists' scope of practice enables the delivery of professional pharmacy services related to sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Studies exploring practices and perspectives regarding a wide range of SRH professional pharmacy services and the extent to which pharmacists are involved in prescribing or administering injections are limited. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore SRH professional pharmacy services provided by pharmacists, evaluate pharmacists' self-reported confidence in providing SRH education and determine preferences for additional trainin

Occupational rehabilitation services provided by a community workers health centre in Hong Kong: a case study.

BACKGROUND: In Hong Kong, the Employees' Compensation Ordinance (ECO), based on the model of the English Workmen's Compensation Act 1943, establishes a no-fault, non-contributory system for work injuries. It focuses merely on the minimum social expectation in compensating injured workers in monetary terms, but does not place much emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation and return to work policies for workers with injury. There is a need to reform an effective and comprehensive occupational rehabilitation system for workers with work injury in Hong Kong. METHODS: This paper presents a case stud

Obesity Prevalence and Associated Factors Among Users of Specialized Community Mental Health Services: An Observational Study.

In Brazil, approximately 6.9 million people live with severe, mild, or moderate mental disorders, requiring different levels of care. Psychosocial Care Centres play a fundamental role in providing specialized care to this population, promoting welcoming practices, continuous treatment, and social reintegration within the Psychosocial Care Network. Although effective in reducing crises and hospitalizations, challenges remain regarding the maintenance of users' physical health. This observational and analytical study aimed to identify the prevalence of obesity (defined as a body mass index ≥ 30

Navigating Health and Community Services After Traumatic Brain Injury: Experiences and Priorities of Black TBI Survivors.

OBJECTIVE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) disproportionately affects Black Americans, who often experience poorer functional outcomes than their White counterparts. These disparities are exacerbated by limited access to rehabilitation and community-based services. Although current literature has examined the specific barriers Black TBI survivors face in accessing these services, few studies have identified alternative sources of support when services are unavailable. This study aimed to identify the barriers to care, existing support systems, and the services most highly prioritized by Black TBI

Integrated community-based HIV and sexual and reproductive health services for youth: a cluster-randomized trial.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) viral suppression rates are disproportionately worse in youth compared to other age groups, and improving this will require addressing the whole HIV cascade, including HIV testing, linkage to care and support to maintain viral suppression. We conducted a cluster-randomized trial of community-based services incorporating HIV testing, treatment and adherence support integrated with sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services for youth (16-24 years) in Zimbabwe. Our hypothesis was that integrated services in community-based settings would increase demand and a

"A Better Way": The Evolution of Community-Based AIDS Health Services in Birmingham, Alabama, 1985-2000.

In 1992, the AIDS Task Force of Alabama (AFTA) secured a $1.8 million federal grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to open Agape House, Birmingham, Alabama's first community-maintained AIDS boarding house for adults. Although AIDS boarding houses existed all over the country throughout the 1980s and 1990s, they have received little attention from scholars. The goal of this project is to understand the rise of Agape House and resources that were wielded to make it possible. Beyond help from a federal institution, Agape House received considerable support from loca

Community engagement in health services research on soil-transmitted helminthiasis in Asia Pacific region: Systematic review.

The research question was what studies are available that have assessed community engagement in the health services research on soil-transmitted helminths? We aimed to synthesise evidence on how communities were engaged in health services research on soil-transmitted helminths in low-and-middle-income countries of the Asia-Pacific Region. We focused on this region because soil-transmitted helminths are endemic, and their burden is significant in this region. This review was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) checklist. Relevant
