Patient narratives in an online hernia peer-support community: a qualitative netnographic analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to explore how individuals with hernia engage with online peer-support communities and how their shared narratives reflect the experience of living with and seeking treatment for hernia. METHODS: A qualitative netnographic approach was employed, analysing posts from a large online hernia support group with approximately 8,500 members across more than 10 countries. The group was selected following scoping of alternative online communities because of its size, activity, heterogeneity, and public accessibility. A purposive sample of 26 high-engagement discussion threads

Implementation of Community Health Worker Support for Tobacco Cessation: A Mixed-Methods Study.

OBJECTIVE: Adults with serious mental illness have high rates of tobacco use disorder and underuse pharmacotherapy for tobacco cessation. In a previous randomized controlled trial, participants receiving community health worker (CHW) support and education for their primary care providers (PCPs) had higher tobacco abstinence rates at 2 years, partly because of increased initiation of tobacco-cessation pharmacotherapy. The authors aimed to determine the association between CHW-participant engagement and tobacco abstinence outcomes. METHODS: The authors conducted a secondary, mixed-methods analy

Development of Pressure Sensors to Help Support Community Lymphedema Monitoring: A Scoping Review.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema is a condition occurring after a partial or full mastectomy, where there is a buildup of interstitial fluid in the body, particularly in the upper limb. There is a lack of at-home sensors that can help monitor the progression of lymphedema. The purpose of this scoping review is to gather relevant information on sensors for remote lymphedema monitoring. A literature search of Medline, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and BMC databases yielded 96 studies. A total of six studies were selected for data extraction. Data were extracted from each study and organized in

Community nurses' support for patients with fibromyalgia who use cannabis to manage pain.

Supporting patients to manage chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia (FM), remains a challenge for community nurses. Research suggests that despite the absence of a licensed cannabis-based product for medicinal use (CBPM) available for people with FM in the UK, there is an appetite for FM patients to use cannabis for pain management. Nurses have expressed anxieties when balancing tensions between helping patients and working within medical guidelines, as well as a need for further education about patient cannabis use. This article provides community nurses with insight into how cannabis

Relationship between Social Support Networks and Physical Functioning in Older Community-Dwelling Mexicans.

Some studies have demonstrated the relationship between social support networks (SSNs) and health status. In this sense, it has been considered that physical and mental functioning is a key indicator of the health in the age people. The aim of this study was to determine the association between social support networks and physical functioning. A cross-sectional study was carried out including a convenience sample of 150 older community-dwelling Mexicans. We assessed the familial, extra-familial and institutional SSNs; social contacts; the activities of daily living (ADL); the instrumental acti

Longitudinal Evaluation of Community Support Project to Improve Oral Function in Japanese Elderly.

Change in oral function was evaluated longitudinally in elderly persons participating in an Exercises for Healthy Oral Function program implemented as part of the Long-Term Care Prevention Project. The participants comprised high-risk and healthy persons aged 65 yr or over. A questionnaire was used to classify them into two groups ('every day or sometimes' or 'rarely') at the end of the study for a comparison of change in repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST) scores and oral diadochokinesis between 3 time points: at before, at immediately after, and at 1 yr after completion of the program.

Hormone dependent uterine epithelial-stromal communication for pregnancy support.

Human fertility is a relatively inefficient process. Despite the presence of visibly healthy embryos, 30% of pregnancies generated by assisted reproductive technology (ART) fail before the second trimester. The uterine microenvironment plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining a successful pregnancy that requires coordinated communication between the epithelial and stromal cells of the endometrium. The epithelial cells must cease proliferation and become permissive for the conceptus (embryo and associated extraembryonic membranes), while the stromal cells undergoes mesenchymal-to-e

Development of supportive services for frontotemporal dementias through community engagement.

The effect of early onset frontotemporal dementias (FTD) on spouses and children is profound, requiring different types of support services from pre-existing Alzheimer's disease interventions already in place. This article explores how the needs of families living with FTD resulted in three programme initiatives developed at Baycrest (an academic health sciences centre focused on ageing, in Toronto, Canada) to meet the needs of this population. These included an Internet-based videoconferencing support group for spouses, a website that provides support and counsel for children and their parent

Development and Evaluation of Support for Tobacco Recovery Training for Community Health Workers, Peer Support Specialists, and Other Front-Line Providers.

BACKGROUND: Health and mental health systems are increasingly employing community health workers and peer support specialists to expand service reach and effectiveness, yet role definitions and competency standards vary widely. Little is known about how to train or prepare these professionals to collaborate with health care teams, engage peers and community members, and address complex health and mental health needs. Tobacco use remains a leading cause of illness and death in the United States and disproportionately impacts people with low incomes and people with mental health conditions, incl

Community-Based Prevention: Findings From Nearly 3 Decades of the Drug-Free Communities Support Program.

CONTEXT: Community-based coalitions are a central strategy for preventing youth substance use, yet evidence describing how coalition-based prevention functions at scale and in contemporary practice contexts remains limited. The Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program represents a long-standing national investment in locally driven, multisector prevention efforts. OBJECTIVE: To examine recent trends in youth substance use in DFC-funded communities and describe coalition infrastructure and practices that provide context for these trends. DESIGN: Descriptive trend analyses of coalition-repo

HEALing Communities Study: Data measures for supporting a community-based intervention to reduce opioid overdose deaths.

INTRODUCTION: The HEALing Communities Study (HCS) tested a community-based intervention in 67 communities across Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, and Ohio to reduce opioid overdose deaths. This paper introduces the HCS measures for monitoring the intervention uptake, reports crude rates for benchmarking, and highlights the importance of interpreting jurisdictional trends in the context of state policies. METHODS: We present technical specifications for the HCS measures and the common data model. Crude rates for the evaluation period (July 2021- June 2022) are reported by state and study arm

Supporting Patients with Psychosis in the Community To Stand Up and Move More: Perspectives of Community Mental Health Staff.

People with psychosis typically show high levels of sedentary behaviour and low levels of physical activity. Effective interventions are needed, and staff will play a crucial role in implementation. Aims: To understand staff perspectives on reducing sedentary behaviour and increasing physical activity. Eighteen staff from NHS mental health trust community teams were interviewed, with data analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Four themes were developed: (1) Choosing to target movement: staff recognise the need to address movement but struggle to prioritise it; (2) Encouraging but not ste

American Academy of Pediatrics Community Access to Child Health (CATCH) Program: a model for supporting community pediatricians.

Advocacy on behalf of children who are medically underserved and the pediatricians who care for them has been a long-standing core commitment of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Although different in etiology, barriers to adequate health care exist in both nations. In the United States, almost 18 million children have either no health insurance or inadequate coverage, whereas in the United Kingdom, parents can, in most cases, readily enroll their youngsters in a universal health insurance program that is not dependent on employers or emp

Co-creating community support strategies for chronic disease management: insights from our experience with two community groups in southern Quito, Ecuador.

Social support plays an important role in the management of type 2 diabetes (T2DM), yet health promotion strategies often focus on individual behavior change while overlooking community structures that sustain supportive environments and facilitate adherence to healthy behaviors. Participatory approaches can help identify locally grounded strategies to strengthen community support networks for chronic disease management. This study aimed to co-create community-based strategies to strengthen social support networks for T2DM management. Between March and September 2024, we conducted a participat
