Enhancing the Therapeutic Relationship Between Mental Health Case Managers and Individuals With Serious Mental Health Conditions: A Participatory Action Research Study in Community-Based Services.

This study examined how community mental health case managers, most of whom were mental health nurses, modified their day-to-day practice to strengthen the therapeutic relationship within community services. Using a participatory action research design across 10 centres in Catalonia, Spain, 24 case managers and 105 patients engaged in two action-reflection cycles. Data from reflective diaries and focus groups were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Through cyclical observation and collaborative reflection, participants identified key facilitators and barriers to developing the therape

Naloxone and the Inner City Youth Experience (NICYE): a community-based participatory research study examining young people's perceptions of the BC take home naloxone program.

BACKGROUND: Take home naloxone (THN) programs reduce mortality by training bystanders to respond to opioid overdoses. Clinical observation by the health care team at the Inner City Youth (ICY) program indicated that young adults appeared to enthusiastically participate in the THN program and developed improved relationships with staff after THN training. However, we found a dearth of literature exploring the experiences of young adults with THN programs. This study set out to address this gap and identify suggestions from the young adults for program improvement. The primary research question

Translation and assessment of encultured meaning of the Multi-Dimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support in Diné bizaad (Navajo) using community-based participatory action research methods.

INTRODUCTION: Perceived social support is a psychological construct that is used to describe the 'perception of adequacy' of the support being provided by a person's social network. Higher perceived social support has been linked to multiple benefits across numerous studies over the past several decades and among multiple populations. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is a 12-item scale to assess the construct of perceived social support. The instrument has been translated to approximately 35 languages and dialects, but it has rarely been translated into tribal lan

Developing patient-reported experience measures to evaluate an Emergency Department Outreach Programme for people experiencing homelessness in Toronto, Canada: a community-based participatory research study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: People experiencing homelessness (PEH) have diverse and complex health and social needs and experience significant barriers to accessing support. As a result, PEH often use the emergency department (ED) for their unmet health and social needs. To address these challenges, the ED Outreach Programme at St. Michael's Hospital was developed with community partners within the Downtown East Toronto Ontario Health Team in Toronto, Canada. PEH presenting in the ED are connected to an outreach worker to identify immediate needs for a safe discharge and to access health and social supports

Blind spots in community-based participatory research with sex workers in Singapore: lessons learned and assumptions uncovered in the context of a diverse, hierarchical and stigmatized key population.

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is quickly becoming an ethical standard for research, ensuring that the research processes align with the values of beneficiaries and contributes to broader social justice goals. This paper reflects on a qualitative study on HIV/STI risks in the sex work industry in Singapore that aimed to adopt a CBPR approach. The project was conducted in partnership with a local sex workers' rights group, Project X, and recruited community members to be part of the research team. The data collection phase of the project lasted for approximately 6months, involvin

Acceptability and feasibility of a community based participatory research project comparing cytology and urine HPV DNA testing for cervical cancer screening in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia.

Non-invasive, self-collected sampling methods for HPV DNA detection in women, which are reliable, efficient, and acceptable have the potential to address barriers to cervical cancer screening in underserved communities, including low-middle income countries (LMIC) such as the island nation of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Urine-based HPV testing has not been rigorously evaluated in clinical trials. A pilot community-based participatory randomized control research project evaluated use of urine HPV testing as a more culturally- and human resource appropriate method of cervical cance

Developing a youth sustainability healthy active living intervention for chronic disease prevention and environmental sustainability through community engagement and codesign: protocol for a multimethod community-based participatory research study in Canada and Jamaica.

BACKGROUND: Most non-communicable diseases (NCDs) develop through multiple complex pathways that involve non-modifiable and modifiable risk factors. Prevention efforts optimally involve a life course approach that promotes healthy eating and physical activity because behaviours adopted early in adolescence and young adulthood are likely to be sustained and can prevent NCDs in later life. This research protocol describes a community-based co-designed study taking place in Canada and Jamaica that positions youth aged 15-25 as agents-of-change in their communities to increase knowledge and develo

Impact of HIV knowledge and stigma on the uptake of HIV testing - Results from a community-based participatory research survey among migrants from sub-Saharan Africa in Germany.

BACKGROUND: In 2015, 3,674 new HIV diagnoses were notified in Germany; 16% of those newly diagnosed cases originated from sub-Saharan Africa (sSA). One quarter of the newly diagnosed cases among migrants from sSA (MisSA) are notified as having acquired the HIV infection in Germany. In order to reach MisSA with HIV testing opportunities, we aimed to identify which determinants influence the uptake of HIV testing among MisSA in Germany. METHODS: To identify those determinants, we conducted a quantitative cross-sectional survey among MisSA in Germany. The survey was designed in a participatory p

Buprenorphine Initiation in the Era of High-potency Synthetic Opioids: A Call for Community-based Participatory Research to Help Learning Health Systems Provide Precision Medicine for Opioid Use Disorder.

High-potency synthetic opioids and adulterants have saturated the US opioid supply, heightening risk to people who use drugs and creating challenges to buprenorphine initiation. As buprenorphine is an essential component of a response to the opioid crisis, a robust evidence base is urgently needed. Rapid research, in partnership with people who use drugs and using community-based participatory research practices to ensure trust, shared goals, and an absence of adverse consequences, should be conducted to help identify the factors associated with successful and failed inductions. Among factors

An Antiracism Community-Based Participatory Research With Organizations Serving Immigrant and Marginalized Communities, Including Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islanders in the United States Pacific Northwest: Qualitative Description Study With Key Informants.

BACKGROUND: Asian American (AA) community leaders, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (NH/PI) community leaders, and allies in the United States Pacific Northwest expressed concern that there are families and children from AA communities and NH/PI communities who experience and witness acts of xenophobia and racism. This can cause racial trauma. The long-time practice of aggregating AA and NH/PI data contributes to erasure and makes it challenging to advance health equity, such as allocating resources. According to AAPI Data's long-awaited report in June 2022, there are over 24 million AAs and 1

A community-based participatory research approach to the development, refinement, and distribution of Test-to-PrEP: a peer-to-peer distributed at-home HIV self-test and prevention information kit in Miami-Dade, Florida.

BACKGROUND: In Miami-Dade County, high HIV incidence rates and suboptimal uptake of HIV prevention strategies, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), underscore significant gaps in community HIV awareness and service accessibility. Novel interventions leveraging community-based participatory research (CBPR) and peer-driven distribution mechanisms offer potential solutions for increasing engagement with HIV testing and preventive services, yet few existing interventions are culturally tailored or systematically integrated into local contexts. Healing the Past by Nurturing the Future-co-designing perinatal strategies for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents experiencing complex trauma: framework and protocol for a community-based participatory action research study.

INTRODUCTION: Child maltreatment and other traumatic events can have serious long-term physical, social and emotional effects, including a cluster of distress symptoms recognised as 'complex trauma'. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Aboriginal) people are also affected by legacies of historical trauma and loss. Trauma responses may be triggered during the transition to parenting in the perinatal period. Conversely, becoming a parent offers a unique life-course opportunity for healing and prevention of intergenerational transmission of trauma. This paper outlines a conceptual framework an
