ECG Monitoring Based on Dynamic Compressed Sensing of Multi-Lead Signals.

This paper presents an innovative method for multiple lead electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring based on Compressed Sensing (CS). The proposed method extends to multiple leads signals, a dynamic Compressed Sensing method, that were previously developed on a single lead. The dynamic sensing method makes use of a sensing matrix in which its elements are dynamically obtained from the signal to be compressed. In this method, for the application to multiple leads, it is proposed to use a single sensing matrix for which its elements are obtained from a combination of multiple leads. The proposed metho

Is vertebral augmentation the right choice for cancer patients with painful vertebral compression fractures?

Cancer-related fractures of the spine are different from osteoporotic ones, not only in pathogenesis but also in natural history and treatment. Higher class evidence now supports offering balloon kyphoplasty to a patient with cancer, provided that the pain is significant in intensity, has a positional character, and correlates to the area of the fractured vertebrae. Absence of clinical spinal cord compression and overt instability are paramount. Because of the frequent disruption of the posterior vertebral body cortex in these patients, the procedure should be performed by experienced operator

Diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is part of the clinical spectrum of venous thromboembolism disease (VTE), whose estimated annual incidence rate is 1-2 episodes per 1000 individuals and represents the third leading cause of cardiovascular mortality in developed countries. Establishing an accurate diagnosis of DVT is essential for preventing acute complications (such as pulmonary embolism) and chronic complications associated with post-thrombotic syndrome. Currently, there are well-established diagnostic algorithms for lower extremity DVT, which include clinical probability models that help establish

Coded aperture temporal compressive digital holographic microscopy.

We report a coded aperture temporal compressive digital holographic microscopy (CATCHY) system to capture high-speed high-resolution samples by integrating snapshot compressive imaging (SCI) into digital holographic microscopy. Specifically, a two-dimensional (2D) detector samples a 4D (x, y, z, t) spatiotemporal data in a compressive manner, and after this, an efficient deep learning-based video SCI reconstruction algorithm is employed to reconstruct the desired 4D data cube. Up to ten high-resolution microscopic images are reconstructed from a snapshot measurement captured by our CATCHY syst

Modalities to Treat Venous Ulcers: Compression, Surgery, and Bioengineered Tissue.

BACKGROUND: Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) represent the most common ulcers of the lower extremity. VLUs are notorious for delayed and prolonged healing with high rates of recurrence. Most patients with VLUs also have significant comorbidities that interfere with primary wound healing. Thus, caring for patients with VLUs requires an interdisciplinary approach that addresses the abnormal venous anatomy and the downstream effects that lead to inflammation, ulceration, and a hostile wound microenvironment. METHODS: The current literature regarding venous ulcer treatment with an emphasis on compression

Surgical management of degenerative cervical myelopathy: a consensus statement.

Degenerative cervical myelopathy (DCM), including cervical spondylotic myelopathy and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, presents a heterogeneous set of variables reflecting its complex nature. Multiple studies in the past have attempted to elucidate an ideal surgical algorithm that surgeons may use when treating these patients, unfortunately all studies to date, including the rigorous systematic review used in this focus issue, have fallen short in identifying a superior approach when addressing DCM. Likely because of a superior approach being nonexistent because there are m

Multiresolution wavelet analysis for efficient analysis, compression and remote display of long-term physiological signals.

Increased inter-equipment connectivity coupled with advances in Web technology allows ever escalating amounts of physiological data to be produced, far too much to be displayed adequately on a single computer screen. The consequence is that large quantities of insignificant data will be transmitted and reviewed. This carries an increased risk of overlooking vitally important transients. This paper describes a technique to provide an integrated solution based on a single algorithm for the efficient analysis, compression and remote display of long-term physiological signals with infrequent short

Using artificial intelligence algorithms to identify existing knowledge within the back pain literature.

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence algorithms can now identify hidden data patterns within the scientific literature. In 2019, these algorithms identified a thermoelectric material within the pre-2009 chemistry literature; years before its discovery in 2012. This approach inspired us to apply this algorithm to the back pain literature as the cause of back pain remains unknown in 90% of cases. METHODS: We created a subset of all PubMed abstracts containing "back" and "pain" and then trained the Word2vec algorithm to predict word proximity. We then identified word pairings having high vector prox

Compression-based classification of biological sequences and structures via the Universal Similarity Metric: experimental assessment.

BACKGROUND: Similarity of sequences is a key mathematical notion for Classification and Phylogenetic studies in Biology. It is currently primarily handled using alignments. However, the alignment methods seem inadequate for post-genomic studies since they do not scale well with data set size and they seem to be confined only to genomic and proteomic sequences. Therefore, alignment-free similarity measures are actively pursued. Among those, USM (Universal Similarity Metric) has gained prominence. It is based on the deep theory of Kolmogorov Complexity and universality is its most novel striking

Mechanical and optical dynamic model of lung.

A multiscale, multiphysics model generates synthetic images of alveolar compression under spherical indentation at the visceral pleura of an inflated lung. A mechanical model connects the millimeter scale of an indenter tip to the behavior of alveoli, walls, and membrane at the micrometer scale. A finite-difference model of optical coherence tomography (OCT) generates the resulting images. Results show good agreement with the experiments performed using a unique indenter-OCT system. The images depict the physical result with the addition of refractive artifacts and speckle. Compression of the

Reversible gastroparesis: functional documentation of celiac axis compression syndrome and postoperative improvement.

Celiac axis compression syndrome has generated much controversy since its original description in 1963. The main symptoms are postprandial epigastric abdominal pain, regurgitation of undigested food, and weight loss, all of which are caused by gastric ischemia from impingement of the celiac axis by the median arcuate ligament of the diaphragm. These symptoms are seen in other common disorders such as chronic mesenteric ischemia and gastroparesis. This makes the diagnosis of celiac axis compression syndrome a true challenge for the clinician. We present data on three patients successfully treat

Compressed radiotherapy treatment planning: A new paradigm for rapid and high-quality treatment planning optimization.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy treatment planning involves solving large-scale optimization problems that are often approximated and solved sub-optimally due to time constraints. Central to these problems is the dose influence matrix-also known as the dij matrix or dose deposition matrix-which quantifies the radiation dose delivered from each beamlet to each voxel. Our findings demonstrate that this matrix is highly compressible, enabling a compact representation of the optimization problems and allowing them to be solved more efficiently and accurately. PURPOSE: To develop a compressed radiotherap

Inverse finite element characterization of the human myometrium derived from uniaxial compression experiments.

The low strain-rate behavior of the human myometrium under compression was determined. To this end, uniaxial, unconstrained compression experiments were conducted on a total of 25 samples from three excised human uteri at strain rates between 0.001 s(-1) and 0.008 s(-1). A three-dimensional finite element model of each sample was created and used together with an optimization algorithm to find material parameters in an inverse estimation process. Friction and shape irregularities of samples were incorporated in the models. The uterine specimens in compression were modeled as viscoelastic, non-

Failure and success in the treatment of breast carcinoma in men: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Male breast cancer (MBC) represents a rare cause of vertebral body compression fractures along with severe pain restricting the patient's daily functioning. Limited number of cases, lack of awareness among patients and physicians leading to delayed management, further increase the average age and disease progression at presentation, resulting in a poor prognosis. Additionally, studies on MBC treatment protocols and the use of female algorithms are unavailable. The implementation of vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty often results in unsatisfactory outcome due to recurrent pain and loss

Compressed Sensing-Accelerated Free-Breathing Liver MRI at 7 T.

Ultra-high field MRI facilitates imaging at high spatial resolutions, which may become important for detailed anatomical and pathological assessment of the human liver. Therefore, we aimed to advance structural liver imaging at 7 T by implementing a high-resolution, phase-shimmed, free-breathing liver scan. Six healthy participants underwent liver MRI scans at 7 T, utilizing an eight-channel parallel transmission system for phase shimming. B0 mapping and Fourier phase-encoded dual refocusing echo acquisition mode (PE-DREAM) multichannel B1 + mapping were performed during breath-holds at expira
