Understanding Dyslexia Through Personalized Large-Scale Computational Models.

Learning to read is foundational for literacy development, yet many children in primary school fail to become efficient readers despite normal intelligence and schooling. This condition, referred to as developmental dyslexia, has been hypothesized to occur because of deficits in vision, attention, auditory and temporal processes, and phonology and language. Here, we used a developmentally plausible computational model of reading acquisition to investigate how the core deficits of dyslexia determined individual learning outcomes for 622 children (388 with dyslexia). We found that individual lea

Adaptive compensation of arcuate fasciculus lateralization in developmental dyslexia.

Previous studies have reported anomalies in the arcuate fasciculus (AF) lateralization in developmental dyslexia (DD). Still, the relationship between AF lateralization and literacy skills in DD remains largely unknown. The purpose of our study is to investigate the relationship between lateralization of three segments of AF (AF anterior segment (AFAS), AF long segment (AFLS), and AF posterior segment (AFPS)) and literacy skills in DD. A total of 26 children with dyslexia and 31 age-matched control children were included in this study. High angular diffusion imaging, combined with spherical de

Designing Thoracic Surgical Care That Works for All: A Quality Improvement Approach to Disparities.

This article conceptualizes disparities in thoracic surgery outcomes as modifiable quality improvement failures that undermine reliability, timeliness, and effectiveness across the care continuum. It links inequities to upstream determinants, including differential tobacco exposure, environmental and occupational carcinogens, health literacy, and structural racism, which together influence risk and access to guideline-concordant care. The authors describe process failures in detection and referral-particularly low uptake of low-dose computed tomographic screening and delayed specialty consulta

Neurological teleconsultation for general practitioners.

A neurology teleconsulting network was implemented between a university hospital in Lisbon and five nearby health centres. PCs equipped for videoconferencing were installed, connected by ISDN lines at 128 kbit/s. Fifty-three general practitioners (GPs) were surveyed. The survey showed that the GPs had difficulties in using computers, but they had definite intentions to use teleconsultation for neurology cases and 83% of the respondents stated that they would probably use the technique. During the study, 90 neurology teleconsultations took place over 55 weeks. The average consultation rate was

Socioeconomic and cultural factors associated with pap smear screening among French women living in Réunion Island.

BACKGROUND: Réunion Island is a French overseas territory located in the southern Indian Ocean, with a challenging socioeconomic and multicultural context. Compared to mainland France, Réunion has an overincidence and overmortality of cervical cancer. In order to investigate these two issues, it is important to evaluate the barriers and potential levers to Pap smear screening among female inhabitants of the island. We aimed to identify the specific socio-demographic factors, cultural factors, and living conditions associated with Pap smear screening in Réunion, with a view to increasing uptake

Usability evaluation of the Computer-Based Health Evaluation System (CHES) eDiary for patients with faecal incontinence: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Faecal incontinence (FI) is prevalent in 15-20% of elderly individuals and is frequently monitored in clinical trials and practice. Bowel diaries are the most common way to document FI, but, in clinical practice, are mainly used as paper-based versions. Electronic diaries (eDiaries) offer many potential benefits over paper-based diaries. The aim of this study was to develop and test an eDiary to document FI. METHODS: We migrated a paper FI diary to an eDiary app based on the Computer-based Health Evaluation System (CHES). To assess usability, we conducted functionality and usabili

Expert reading coaching via technology: Investigating the reading, writing, and spelling outcomes of students in grades K-8 experiencing significant reading learning disabilities.

While qualitative research has shown great benefits for teachers who receive coaching, there is a paucity of experimental research examining students' academic outcomes after their teachers received ongoing support from a knowledgeable and experienced coach. Thus, a quasi-experimental design investigated the literacy outcomes of 452 students experiencing reading learning disabilities in grades K-8th whose special education and/or resource room teachers (n = 44) received student data-focused coaching support through on-site coaching, on-demand coaching (teachers could request support if needed)

Development, optimization, and preliminary evaluation of a novel artificial intelligence tool to promote patient health literacy in radiology reports: The Rads-Lit tool.

Radiology reports are an integral part of patient medical records; however, these reports often contain complex medical terminology that are difficult for patients to comprehend, potentially leading to anxiety, misunderstanding, and misinterpretation. The development of user-friendly instruments to improve understanding is thus critically important to enhance health literacy and empower patients. In this study, we introduce a novel artificial intelligence (AI) interface, the Rads-Lit Tool, which can simplify radiology reports for patients using natural language processing (NLP) techniques. Integrating Artificial Intelligence with Gamification in Medical Education: A Pedagogically Grounded Framework and Critical Review.

Digital learning technologies have transformed medical education, with artificial intelligence (AI) and gamification emerging as two of the most active areas of innovation. While each has demonstrated value independently, their integration offers distinctive potential to personalise learning, sustain engagement, and produce durable educational outcomes. Yet the convergence remains empirically disjointed and theoretically underdeveloped. This pedagogically grounded critical review synthesises the evidence at the crossroads of AI and gamification in medical and health professional education, dra

A computer-based Pinyin intervention for disadvantaged children in China: Effects on Pinyin skills, phonological awareness, and character reading.

Pinyin is an alphabetic script that denotes pronunciations of Chinese characters. Studies have shown that Pinyin instruction enhances both phonological awareness (e.g., Shu et al., Developmental Science, 2008, 11, 171-181) and character reading (e.g., Lin et al., Psychological Science, 2010, 21, 1117-1122) in Chinese children. In the present study, we provided a 3-week Pinyin intervention with a computer-based Pinyin GraphoGame to disadvantaged migrant children with poor Pinyin skills. A total of 252 first graders who were children of migrant workers in a large Chinese city were assessed to id
