Water-soluble phthalocyanines with non-peripheral naphthoxy-sulfonate substituents: computational docking, biological and sono-photochemical investigations.

This study reports the synthesis of a novel ligand, sodium 6-(2,3-dicyanophenoxy)naphthalene-2-sulfonate (1), and the corresponding non-peripherally substituted metallophthalocyanines (MPcs) [M = Zn(II) (2), Ga(III) (3); X = Cl, In(III) (4); X = Cl]. These compounds were functionalized with 6-naphthoxy-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt groups. Given the limitations of conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT), we investigated the potential of sonophotodynamic therapy (SPDT), a dual-modality approach combining light and ultrasound, to enhance singlet oxygen (¹O2) production. Among the synthesized metal

Deep Convolutional Neural Networks Provide Motion Grading for High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography of the Scaphoid.

In vivo high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) studies on bone characteristics are limited, partly due to the lack of standardized and objective techniques to describe motion artifacts responsible for lower-quality images. This study investigates the ability of such deep-learning techniques to assess image quality in HR-pQCT datasets of human scaphoids. In total, 1451 stacks of 482 scaphoid images from 53 patients, each with up to six follow-ups within one year, and each with one non-displaced fractured and one contralateral intact scaphoid, were independently gr

Computational approaches to decode grasping force and velocity level in upper-limb amputee from intraneural peripheral signals.

Objective. Recent results have shown the potentials of neural interfaces to provide sensory feedback to subjects with limb amputation increasing prosthesis usability. However, their advantages for decoding motor control signals over current methods based on electromyography (EMG) are still debated. In this study we compared a standard EMG-based method with approaches that use peripheral intraneural data to infer distinct levels of grasping force and velocity in a trans-radial amputee.Approach. Surface EMG (three channels) and intraneural signals (collected with transverse intrafascicular multi

Lower Leg Arterial Calcifications Assessed by High-Resolution Peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography in Hypoparathyroid and Pseudohypoparathyroid Patients.

Hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) and pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) are diseases with abnormal calcium and phosphate homeostasis and low and high PTH levels, respectively. It has been hypothesized that this could dispose to vascular calcifications and thereby perhaps also cardiovascular morbidity. The aim of this study was to assess lower leg arterial calcifications (LLAC) in patients with HypoPT or PHP. Using a cross-sectional design, we measured the LLAC using a high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) scanner in 72 patients with HypoPT and 25 patients with PHP and co

Bone microstructure of adult patients with non-surgical hypoparathyroidism assessed by high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

UNLABELLED: There is limited evidence regarding changes in bone microstructure in patients with hypoparathyroidism. In the current study, we used a non-invasive technique to assess bone structure in hypoparathyroidism patients and discovered site-specific changes which were mainly influenced by age and menstrual status. Such changes were more prominent in the trabeculae as well as in non-surgical as opposed to post-surgical patients. INTRODUCTION: Hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT) is a rare disease characterized by the lack of parathyroid hormone. There is limited evidence regarding changes in bone

Association of Computed Tomographic Leg Muscle Characteristics With Lower Limb and Cardiovascular Events in Patients With Peripheral Artery Disease.

Background Poor lower extremity physical performance is an independent predictor of unfavorable outcome in patients with peripheral artery disease ( PAD ); however, few studies have assessed muscle characteristics on imaging directly. Method and Results A novel 3-dimensional semi-automated protocol was developed to estimate leg muscle volume and density (mean attenuation) from computed tomography images. Patients with PAD who underwent a lower extremity computed tomography scan at a tertiary vascular surgery center were included, and were followed up using hospital records and linked data as p

The relationship of bone properties using high resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography to radiographic components of hip osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Positive associations between radiographic osteoarthritis (OA) and areal bone mineral density (BMD) have been demonstrated and appear strongest when bony features of OA are considered. To date, these associations have not been assessed using HRpQCT. DESIGN: A total of 318 participants (170 men and 148 women), aged 72.1-81.4 years from a non-selected cohort, underwent HRpQCT of the distal radius and tibia along with hip radiography. Differences in bone microarchitecture were assessed between those with and without osteophytes, sclerosis or joint space narrowing (JSN) in either hip.

A multiscale computational model predicts distribution of anti-angiogenic isoform VEGF165b in peripheral arterial disease in human and mouse.

Angiogenesis is the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing microvessels. Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is caused by atherosclerosis that results in ischemia mostly in the lower extremities. Clinical trials including VEGF-A administration for therapeutic angiogenesis have not been successful. The existence of anti-angiogenic isoform (VEGF165b) in PAD muscle tissues is a potential cause for the failure of therapeutic angiogenesis. Experimental measurements show that in PAD human muscle biopsies the VEGF165b isoform is at least as abundant if not greater than the VEGF165a isoform. We c

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease is more prevalent in patients with hemodialysis: comparison with the findings of multidetector-row computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) influences the mortality of patients on hemodialysis therapy. Although the ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) is used widely to detect PAOD, it yields false-negative results because of calcifications of vascular walls. To more accurately assess the prevalence of PAOD, we investigated which noninvasive method, among ABI, toe-brachial pressure index, transcutaneous Po(2), and skin perfusion pressure (SPP), had superior sensitivity and specificity to the others. METHODS: Multidetector-row computed tomography was performed in 36 hemodialys

Vessel-by-Vessel Computed Tomography Calcium Scoring of the Foot in Peripheral Artery Disease: Association with Patient-Level Factors.

Objective: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is associated with increased risk of nonhealing ulcers, amputation, and mortality due to occlusive atherosclerotic plaques. Computed tomography (CT) imaging detects vascular calcification in PAD; however, quantitative vessel-by-vessel analysis of calcium burden in the feet of PAD patients has not been assessed. This study sought to perform quantitative analysis of vessel-specific calcium burden and examine the patient-level determinants of foot calcium burden in PAD patients. Approach: PAD patients (n = 41) were prospectively enrolled and underwent CT

Precision of bone mechanoregulation assessment in humans using longitudinal high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in vivo.

Local mechanical stimuli in the bone microenvironment are essential for the homeostasis and adaptation of the skeleton, with evidence suggesting that disruption of the mechanically-driven bone remodelling process may lead to bone loss. Longitudinal clinical studies have shown the combined use of high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) and micro-finite element analysis can be used to measure load-driven bone remodelling in vivo; however, quantitative markers of bone mechanoregulation and the precision of these analyses methods have not been validated in human subje

Bone health in long-term survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. An assessment by peripheral quantitative computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Loss of bone mineral is a common concomitant of the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) due mainly to chemotherapy, especially with corticosteroids. Osteopenia/osteoporosis may be encountered long into survivorship. Measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is limited to two-dimensionality and cannot distinguish trabecular from cortical bone. METHODS: A sample of 74 subjects, ages 13.5-38.3 years more than 10 years from diagnosis, underwent peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) at metaphyseal (trabecular bone) and diaphy

The clinical application of high-resolution peripheral computed tomography (HR-pQCT) in adults: state of the art and future directions.

High-resolution peripheral computed tomography (HR-pQCT) was developed to image bone microarchitecture in vivo at peripheral skeletal sites. Since the introduction of HR-pQCT in 2005, clinical research to gain insight into pathophysiology of skeletal fragility and to improve prediction of fractures has grown. Meanwhile, the second-generation HR-pQCT device has been introduced, allowing novel applications such as hand joint imaging, assessment of subchondral bone and cartilage thickness in the knee, and distal radius fracture healing. This article provides an overview of the current clinical ap
