Recently declassified Gulag archives reveal for the first time that the Stalinist leadership established medical research laboratories in the camps. The present work offers an initial reading of the medical research conducted by and on prisoners in Stalin's Gulag. Although Gulag science did not apparently possess the lethal character of Nazi medicine, neither was this work entirely benign. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the concentration of cAMP in saliva might reflect the biologic activity of parathyroid hormone (PTH), as nephrogenous levels of cAMP reflect parathyroid function. This study assessed impact of community based self care integrative treatment provided through mass camps in villages of three districts of Kerala, India endemic for lymphatic filariasis (LF). The effects of prostaglandins E on the concentration of cyclic AMP (cAMP) and a possible antagonism of opiates vs. prostaglandins E were studied in homogenates and in slices of rat striata in vitro.
