OBJECTIVE: To assess trends in the maternal mortality ratio over a 10-year period in France and the causes, risk factors, quality of care, and avoidability of maternal deaths.
METHODS: Maternal deaths up to 1 year after the end of the pregnancy from 1998 to 2007 were identified and studied through the French Confidential Enquiry Into Maternal Deaths system. Time trends were analyzed by comparing the two 5-year periods for maternal mortality ratios, both overall and by women's characteristics, causes of death, existence of suboptimal care, and avoidability.

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. BACKGROUND: Confidential inquiries into dramatic events are a specific type of audit used to measure quality of care. Confidential inquiries have been conducted on maternal deaths in some European countries since 1920-30. In France, the first one was carried out in 1996. The number of these surveys is increasing, including in developing countries. Initially implemented in perinatology, they are also being carried out in other surgical or medical areas. The aim of this work was to describe the methods used and demonstrate their contribution to evaluating healthcare services.

The COVID-19 pandemic has driven rapid, widespread adoption of telemedicine. The distribution of clinicians, long travel distances, and disability all limit access to care, especially for persons with Parkinson's disease.
