[Behçet's disease disclosed by ocular conjunctival aphthous ulcer. Apropos of a case].

Aphthosis in Behçet's disease is usually located in the oro-genital areas, but other locations have been described. The authors report the case of a 45 year old woman who presented with an ocular conjunctival aphthous ulcer. This was the initial presentation of Behçet's disease. This case report illustrates that aphthosis in Behçet's disease can have unusual sites such as the ocular conjunctiva. Furthermore, in this case, the conjunctival aphthosis was presenting sign of this systemic disease.

Conjunctival bleeding in Osler's disease with associated platelet dysfunction. A case report.

A patient with Osler's disease (hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia) was admitted to hospital because of obstinate, profuse conjuctival bleeding occurring without any known preceding rrauma. Extensive examination of the haemostatic mechanism revealed an impaired platelet function reflected in defective platelet aggregation by ADP, collagen adrenalin and defective clot retraction. This platelet dysfunction, whose association with conjunctival telangiectasia was hitherto unknown, impaired the patient's already deficient primary haemostasis following the vascular anomaly and apparently contrib

Immunofluorescence detection of globotriaosylceramide deposits in conjunctival biopsies of Fabry disease patients.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease is an X-linked disorder due to a deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A and leads to the accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) in various cells. The detection of Gb3 deposits may help in the diagnosis. To date, no immunofluorescence-specific detection of Gb3 in conjunctival biopsies has been reported. The aim of this work was to detect Gb3 accumulation in conjunctival biopsies from Fabry patients by immunofluorescence. METHODS: Conjunctival biopsies taken from Fabry males and females, before and after enzyme replacement therapy, and normal controls were processed

Survey of conjunctival flora in dogs with clinical signs of external eye disease.

Bacteria were isolated 68% of the time from the conjunctival sacs of 120 dogs with conjunctivitis, blepharitis, dacryocystitis, or corneal ulcerations. Coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequently isolated organism (68%); when both eyes were affected, S aureus was recovered from 29% of the dogs; and in dogs with 1 eye affected, S aureus was isolated from 23% of the affected eyes and in 18% of the nonaffected eyes. Other organisms recovered from eyes were coagulase-negative Staphylococcus epidermidis (27%), beta-hemolytic streptococcus (19%), alpha-hemolytic Streptococcus (1

Use of explainable AI on slit-lamp images of anterior surface of eyes to diagnose allergic conjunctival diseases.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a promising new technology that has the potential of diagnosing allergic conjunctival diseases (ACDs). However, its development is slowed by the absence of a tailored image database and explainable AI models. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop an explainable AI model that can not only diagnose ACDs but also present the basis for the diagnosis. METHODS: A dataset of 4942 slit-lamp images from 10 ophthalmological institutions across Japan were used as the image database. A sequential pipeline of segmentation AI was constructed to identify
