Analysis of the drug therapy of gatifloxacin and levofloxacin in the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis.

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is an acute conjunctivitis that is frequently transmitted in summer and autumn. It is a common and frequently occurring disease in ophthalmology clinic. Gatifloxacin is an effective antibacterial drug. It not only maintains the antibacterial effect of the three generation of fluoroquinolones on Gram-negative bacteria, but also enhances the effectiveness of gatifloxacin, including other Gram-positive bacteria and anaerobes. In this paper, by taking gatifloxacin eye drops as the experimental drug and levofloxacin as the control drug, we conducted a double-blind ran

Estimate of the direct and indirect annual cost of bacterial conjunctivitis in the United States.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to estimate both the direct and indirect annual costs of treating bacterial conjunctivitis (BC) in the United States. This was a cost of illness study performed from a U.S. healthcare payer perspective. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the medical literature was supplemented by data on the annual incidence of BC which was obtained from an analysis of the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS) database for the year 2005. Cost estimates for medical visits and laboratory or diagnostic tests were derived from published Medicare CPT fee codes. The c

The development and evaluation of electrolysis in conjunction with power ultrasound for the disinfection of bacterial suspensions.

There is an increasing incidence in health problems related to environmental issues that originate from inadequate treatment of potable waters. This has compelled scientists and engineers to engage in innovative technologies to achieve a maximum disinfection at affordable costs. Some species of bacteria produce colonies and spores that can agglomerate in spherical clusters and thus protect organisms on the inside of the cluster against biocidal attack. Flocs of fine particles (e.g., clay) can entrap bacteria and this can also protect them against the biocides. Other bacteria have the ability t

Gatifloxacin ophthalmic solution for treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis: safety, efficacy and patient perspective.

Gatifloxacin is a fourth generation fluroquinolone antibiotic that has been prescribed for systemic use. However, the drug which was developed by Kyorin (Japan) was linked to toxic reactions and death and was banned in the United States and Canada for use as an oral dosage form. It continues to be used as a topical application for ophthalmic conditions as the systemic toxicity seen when taking the drug orally has not been observed with ophthalmic use. The available data indicate that ocular use of gatifloxacin is safe, and effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including intracellular

Bacterial conjunctivitis in children: antibiotic eye drops only if eye washing is ineffective.

(1) Acute infectious conjunctivitis in children is often due to bacterial infection. (2) Systematic use of local antibiotic therapy may not be needed. A systematic review and two recent trials conducted in the primary care setting provide interesting results. (3) The results of several trials, and specifically of a study of children (excluding neonates) with uncomplicated conjunctivitis in primary healthcare, show that about 50% of patients recover within four days without antibiotic therapy. Antibiotic therapy seems to hasten recovery by less than half a day. (4) A trial involving adults and

Bacteriology and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of Childhood Acute Bacterial Conjunctivitis in Western Greece.

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis is a common, highly contagious infection in children and is usually treated empirically with broad spectrum topical antibiotics. In the current study we investigated bacteriology and antibiotic susceptibility patterns in childhood acute bacterial conjunctivitis in Western Greece. We conducted a retrospective analysis of presumed acute bacterial conjunctivitis cases in ''Karamandaneio'' Pediatric General Hospital of Patras, Western Greece, between February 1, 2013 and January 31, 2018. Specimens from the lower conjunctiva fornix were isolated from 191 cases and ou

Topical antibiotics for acute bacterial conjunctivitis: Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis update.

Uncertainty remains about the extent to which findings from our previously published systematic review and meta-analysis of double-blind, randomised controlled trials of topical antibiotics compared with placebo in the management of patients with acute bacterial conjunctivitis treated in secondary care outpatient settings are generalisable to the management of the condition in primary care settings. We updated our review, undertaking searches, methodological assessment, data extraction and analysis according to a pre-defined protocol. In addition to the previous three included studies, we iden

Comparative Analysis of Bacterial Conjunctivitis in the Adult and Pediatric Inpatient vs. Outpatient Population.

The etiology and resistance pattern of bacterial conjunctivitis varies depending on the patient's care setting and age. A retrospective, observational study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital. A total of 126 patients-76 adults and 50 children-diagnosed with conjunctival infection during inpatient or ambulatory care were analyzed. In the samples of adult patients, isolates were represented by Gram-positive cocci (57.7%; Staphylococcus spp., S. pneumoniae) followed by Enterobacterales (17.97%; P. mirabilis, E. coli, Klebsiella spp.), and non-fermenters (7.69%; Pseudomonas spp., A

A new diagnostic index for bacterial conjunctivitis in primary care. A re-derivation study.

BACKGROUND: Eighty per cent of primary care patients with infectious conjunctivitis are treated with antibiotics, although in only 30%, there is a bacterial cause. An accurate diagnostic index to distinguish bacterial from viral conjunctivitis may help reduce unnecessary antibiotics. OBJECTIVES: To validate and, if necessary, improve an existing diagnostic index for bacterial conjunctivitis. METHODS: Non-experimental validation and updating study of an existing diagnostic index in Dutch General Practice. We collected 210 adult patients with incident symptoms suggestive for acute infectious c

Acute bacterial conjunctivitis - antibiotic susceptibility and resistance to commercially available topical antibiotics in Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: There is a shifting trend in susceptibility and resistance of the bacteria towards available antibiotics in the last decade. Therefore, periodic studies to monitor the emerging trends in antibiotic susceptibility and resistance are crucial in guiding antibiotic selection. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the most common pathogens causing bacterial conjunctivitis, and to find the in vitro susceptibility and resistance of these pathogens to commercially available topical antibiotic eye drops in Nepal. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Conjunctival smears and antibiotic sens

High proportion of nontypeable Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates among sporadic, nonoutbreak cases of bacterial conjunctivitis.

PURPOSE: Outbreaks of bacterial conjunctivitis have been linked to nontypeable strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae that lack a capsule, a key virulence factor for invasive infections. In contrast, isolates from sporadic, nonoutbreak cases of conjunctivitis were thought to be similar to invasive or nasopharyngeal isolates with respect to their capsular serotype and antibiotic resistance profile. This hypothesis was tested for 302 strains isolated during three prospective, multicenter clinical studies of bacterial conjunctivitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: S. pneumoniae capsular serotypes were dete

Effective Treatment of Haemophilus influenzae-Induced Bacterial Conjunctivitis by a Bioadhesive Nanoparticle Reticulate Structure.

Ocular formulations should provide an effective antibiotic concentration at the site of infection to treat bacterial eye infections. However, tears and frequent blinking accelerate the drug clearance rate and limit drug residence time on the ocular surface. This study describes a biological adhesion reticulate structure (BNP/CA-PEG) consisting of antibiotic-loaded bioadhesion nanoparticles (BNP/CA), with an average 500-600 nm diameter, and eight-arm NH2-PEG-NH2 for local and extended ocular drug delivery. This retention-prolonging effect is a function of the Schiff base reaction between groups
